consider it a true crusade and maybe even the not so fringe far right that believe we need to establish a base in Iraq to bring about the rapture.

As heathen savages, even though they are comparatively advanced in many ways, or at least they were before we started bombing them (literacy rates, equality of women in professions, percent of the population with advanced degrees, etc.)
* Dubious reasons for going to war. * Utter decimation of innocent civilians. * Rise of extremists. * Financial goals hidden behind hyperbole about justice and religion.

3. I think it shares many similarities to the Roman invasions |
|
Especially Crassus' little misadventure (in almost the same area we're in right now).

4. it reminds one that the west eventually lost every crusade back then |
|
especially the horrifying 4th crusade, aka, The Children's Crusade.
And what stemmed from these crusades, more autocratic power, concentrated in fewer western hands. More religious power and control over the lives of innocents everywhere. Horrific losses of men and material. Destruction of several viable societies. Forced slavery in the name of god.
The Crusades coincided with some of the worst times ever recorded in western history - what some people call the Dark Ages.
Let us not ignore the fact that the powers behind many of the crusades took advantage of the situation and managed to emasculate or destroy potential competitors or political (and religious) adversaries)

the similarity to the 1847/48 war with Mexico and taking of Mexico City, ending in the bogus treaty of Guadaloupe Hidalgo. And it even has the 1845 war in Texas to fit pretty nicely to the Kuwait war.
Of course, it also greatly resembles the Vietnam war and Crusades.

6. I think it's a bit closer to the invasion of Poland. |
|
And the Warsaw uprising.
Only this time the uprising will ultimately succeed.
