4. Decent job numbers came out today so, of course, the stock market
went down. I love it when the stock market gets depressed because of good news for regular people.

I know why they do it. They are afraid that interest rates will go up too much, blah, blah, blah.

I would just guess that would be the thing that happened today to give your Mom that talking point.

8. I would think that too.

NOTE: Investor's Business Daily is right-wing editorial-wise, but this article doesn't really have much editorial content if at all.

The economy hasn't been terrible lately in my opinion, but the fluctuations in oil prices have made things somewhat turbulent (though I'll admit it's having less of an effect the last few weeks), and that's partly due to the mess we've made in Iraq.

5. That's the WH talking points. Snow was on today braging about
how great everything is! Employment #'s higher than expected, and all is wonderful with the world!

However, if you listen to Lou Dobbs, you'll find out that the job #'s were almost all in the retail and service sector. Yea, there are more people working, but they're probably working 2 jobs to make half of what they made before.

7. Hey Ladyhawk!
:hi:  I thought you weren't on speaking terms?

My freepy, gun-totin' fundy aunt from NM came and visited this Summer. Funny how she spent a whole week drinking from morning to night in the French Quarter, but had the gall to criticize our "gay art" and "gay friends," and "homosexshule ways." Basically, we invented AIDS, according to her. I was able to stand her whiskey breath enough to hear lots of insane freeper talk... I learn a lot when I'm with my redneck family! ;) They listen to Rush and Hannity on the radio ALL DAY and have all the TVs on FOX News, ALL DAY AND NIGHT! :puke:

I benefit, though, because I get to hear the synchronized talking points without damaging my visual cortex. :D

11. After my surgery I needed supportive care, more than
In-Home Supportive Services could give. If I hadn't rekindled the relationship, I would have starved in my apartment. :( I'm still not sure how to handle things.

I will probably have to move away from this town if/when I get healthy enough to do so. It's a small town and people here have known me since birth. They think they still know me. Unfortunately, I get drawn into "church talk" quite often and I have to tell them I don't believe anymore. At that point, I become either an enemy or a target for re-proselytization. I am no longer a person. I've tried to maintain friendships with fundies and have discovered it's impossible. They can't leave me alone. They just have to proselytize. Ladyhawk don't play that.

Unfortunately, my mother compounds the problem by giving my number and e-mail address to people I don't want to talk to (fundies). She keeps trying subtle things to win me back to the fold--but I'm not a fucking sheep.

I need to get involved with some folks that aren't 1) religious and 2) rigid. This town is an intellectual desert.

13. If you can, move to New Orleans.
The price of living is cheap here, compared to most cities. (unleaded gas can still be found for under 2 bucks, and a gallon of milk under 3 dollars).

Also, eventhough we have more churches than most (density), we are free think and be who we are. Wanna dress in drag? Wanna join a Unitarian Church? Wanna shout "fuck you Bush" in public? :D

15. I heard this the other day too
and the inDUHvidual said that the proof is in the price of housing. You see, the price of housing in our area has more than tripled and this indicates that people have good jobs and lots of money because they are buying these high priced houses. It's just that simple.

I'm just telling you what she said... don't kill the messenger ;)

18. I think I am going to be on the wrong side of the debate here
but, for what it is worth, we have had the biggest year ever here at our resort. Ever.

And my wife and I cater almost exclusively to the blue collar crowd. Take a look at our prices and you will see that we are reasonable.
Branson Condos
Our high season rates range anywhere from $45-$175 a night. Low season is $30-$125.

Quite literally, we have been sold out almost since the middle of April this year.

The condos that we have are all privately owned. Went on the market in April and all 12 sold in 2 months!!! And quite a few folks are contracting for units coming available next year.

To top it off, we still have companies calling the both of us to do some extra work in the wintertime in my old field as an electronics engineer.

My customers range anywhere from truckers to full blitz doctors. All seem to be overwhelmed in a busy busy economy. Quite simply, it is one of the busiest times I have ever seen outside of 1998, 1999.

26. Why the need for a smart ass response?
"...just how good is it in white bread, redneck Missouri?..."

Maybe if you were a bit less confrontational you wouldn't constantly have to settle for Telluride and Durango. (Been there, done that pal. As well as Cabo, Tahoe, The Azores, you name it.)

"...I guess a lot of older blue collar retirees and such think it's just the greatest vacation spot on earth. Personally, I prefer to spend my vacation $ in the Rockies, nice progressive places like Telluride and Durango, where I was last month..."

And personally, I don't really give a flying crap if you do decide to go to Colorado. We have several 100 families at our resort each year from Colorado enjoying our nice little "redneck" resort.

Asshole.

28. Well considering that it is
the #1 tourist destination in America by car, there must be plenty of people "...Who wants to listen to a bunch of hillbilly music anyway?..."

You really couldn't add anything to the post so you decided to post a pathetic slam against Branson. To eff'ing bad that I decided to kick it out of your ass right back at you.

The fact is, I responded to the original post which simply demonstrated that contrary to all accounts, we have had 1,000s upon 1,000s of visitors here this year. All driving, all working a LOT of overtime, and virtually everyone reporting a HUGE uptic in business.

(And it is NOT just "median income Missouri". We have had almost EVERY single state here at the resort this year. From Maine to California and everywhere in between.)

31. Welcome to DU, Blitzburgh, but please review the rules.
Drag-out fights are fine, but the personal ephitat ain't cool.

Carolab, in my experience, is not at all what that word denotes.

Having strong opinions and that word are not always the same thing.

What I don't know is why Blitzburgh's posts didn't get deleted.

First, he jumps in with a completely IRRELEVANT post about how well his little resort is doing in Branson, which was more of a PLUG than anything.

Then, because he can't take my criticism of crackerville he calls me an a'hole.

And when I explain my response, I get deleted? That makes no sense.

This guy has been jumping in here and there since before the election with his Republican spin-nonsense, all the while trying to make it seem he's "on our side". It's time for this poser to go, IMHO.

22. You don't have to be THAT wealthy for this economy to be good.
Millionaire status isn't necessary, just a decent income and a secure job.

Unfortunately, most people don't fall into this category.

23. Ladyhawk, if you want to debate her
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 01:17 AM by AmandaRuth
you can always point out that the definition of inflation has been changed to exclude any basic necessities (from what I understand). The rate of inflation doesn't include food, energy, (such as gas and electricity) medical costs and such. I know how much I make and where it goes, and costs are going up.

The stupid inflation rate only measures widgets and gadgets you get at Walmart or Target. While it is great a personal cd player only costs $9.99, the cost of milk and bread have gone up at least 30%. My phone and electric bills are up as well, and you know about the gas. I always cringe when i hear the media tell me inflation is under control. Whose control? If you can't trust the government to give you this basic economic information, why would you trust anything they say.

Edited to say: I agree with the poster above - these cost of living increases hit the lower incomes hard and I mean hard. I know a few people working full time and using the food bank.

that doesn't necessarily reflect life on main street. "Economists" often reduce existence to few economic indicators that are poor reflections of the lives of working class people. Bottom line: Figures lie and liars figure.

32. Does she work for Halliburton? Is she employed in the military or security
industries? Has she been spotted hauling duffel bags out of Iraq? Does she have a job pertaining to the increasing levels of incarceration of millions of non-violent drug offenders? Does her work have something to do with celebrities, reality television, show trials or corporate media fluff?

If not, then, she just doesn't know what she's talking about.
