I have a really dumb question: (re *)
I see Georgie Butch referred to on DU all the time as "*".

I even got some great buttons from BrainButtons with "*" references.

What does it mean? Why does "*"=Bu$h?

Thanks.

1. I use * sometimes because I hate saying or seeing his name
It's like "he who must not be named."

2. That started after * was selected by the SC.
Someone wrote something about how this president would always have an asterisk after his name. DU picked it up the rest is history.

Because that's the easiest way to identify him w/o
having to actually spell his name or title...w/o getting physically ill.:)

3. * = historical connotation
a la Roger Maris' 61 home runs

His asterisk is for being the only person every elected to lose the popular vote, and handed the office by the SCOTUS.

19. yes because Maris broke Ruth's record but it was a longer season
that is why
* means something was different and can not be compared to what happened before

14. I've always used "*" because I couldn't stand to type out the name.
But THIS? THIS will be my new rationale.

7. It's symbolic of any president who
won the electoral college but not the popular vote. I think there was one other in the 1800's but forget who it was.

Trudeau was the one who popularized it though.

9. I've always favored "Schimpanski" . . .
Because that's the name that the July 20 plotters gave Hitler during the 3rd Reich.

13. Think Baseball almanacs...
An asterisk is used to indicate an anomaly in the stat that doesn't fairly compare with other scores or records. The most famous asterisk used was when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's homerun record. The rules changed, the season was extended and Hank Aaron played more games, and had more at-bats his record breaking year than Babe Ruth.. Fair to compare?. Same thing with these Steroid-using players breaking records. In the future we may see the asterisk next to their names indicating these superplayers cheated. Kinda like Bush* will have one in the history books - he didn't win the 2000 election, he was appointed through nefarious actions..."Cheaters Don't Win"
