TRAPPED RUSSIAN SUB HAS RESURFACED: ALL 7 SURVIVED
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 11:08 PM by Bluebear

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, Associated Press Writer 10 minutes ago

A Russian mini-submarine that was trapped for nearly three days under the Pacific Ocean surfaced Sunday after a British remote-controlled vehicle cut away the undersea cables that had snarled it, news agencies reported.

The AS-28 made an emergency surfacing and appeared on the water at around 4:26 p.m. local time, ITAR-Tass and RIA-Novosti reported. The condition of the vessel's seven-member crew was not immediately known, though naval officials had been in regular contact with the crew, who faced dwindling oxygen and chilly temperatures.

edit: CNN reports all 7 survived.

3. There has been a rather weird, 600+ post thread at FR
on this matter here:

which seems to demonstrate just how fucked a good proportion of the posters there really are.

"That's my complaint about Fox on the weekends -- lots of taped shows and breaking items only in snippets on the half hour or so."

I stopped watching them 2-3 years ago. They're the tabloid of Networks.

I can get my independent news analyisis from radio and the Internet. No need to listen to leftist neocons spreading their anti-American agenda.

9. Trapped sub surfaces, crew safe
A Russian mini-submarine with seven trapped crew members has surfaced Sunday from the Pacific depths where it had been stuck since Thursday, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. All seven crew members are alive, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet has confirmed.

14. Thanks for the post Bluebear...nice to have some good news for a change.
Checking out the latest though (this appears to be 1 hour old):

Some unexpected problems seem to have appeared Sunday morning, after British Scorpio 45 underwater vehicle was done cutting the entanglements that ensnared the vessel on the Pacific seabed. According to Captain Alexander Kosolapov, spokesman for the Russian Pacific Fleet, the Scorpio had to be lifted because of some damage it suffered during the rescue operation, and the task of cleaning the Russian mini-sub from fishing nets had been left unfinished.

This new development prevents the rescue team from lifting the AS-28 mini submarine with 7 crew members on board: Navy specialists say, that the mini-sub has to be cleared of all entanglements for safe emersion. “Any remaining parts of the nets should be removed, and the mini-sub should be cleaned entirely before it’s lifted”, — the Interfax agency quotes Kosolapov as saying.

Found this on the BBC site:

The seven-man crew, who had faced low temperatures and dwindling oxygen, are all alive and were able to climb out of the submarine unaided.

Why is the ocean bottom so horribly littered with crap that will undoubtedly snag another one someday??

34. There are tons of fishing nets on the ocean floor. These things are miles
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 12:19 AM by LibInTexas
long and if a trawler gets one caught they cut them and they find their way to the floor in time. These nets also kill countless sea life that the fishermen don't intend to catch.

Also, I read someplace, but can't find it at the moment, that the sub was snagged by an underwater military antenna. We also (and the Sov's et al.) have laid miles of cable on the ocean floor for military purposes.

On edit found this:

The AS-28, itself a rescue vessel, got its propeller tangled in metal cords from the antenna of an electronic underwater monitoring station -- part of Russia's coastal defenses -- during military exercises.

41. I think they were near this thing deliberately
probably trying to get as close as possible and got too close. Even though there is a ton of stuff on the sea floor only a miniscule bit of the total area is affected, and my uninformed guess is that subs really are in much more danger of hitting/snagging stuff on the surface...

but I followed this pretty closely. It seemed like an important international effort. I only wish the Russians had called for help and not let 118 die in the sub the last time.
