The "Religious" Right is well down the path to destroying democracy.
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 10:44 AM by Cyrano
It's no news that a minority of Christian fanatics have taken over the Republican Party. And since the Rethugs currently run all branches of our government, these knuckle draggers are on the verge of wiping out our constitution, our rights and our freedoms.

As an agnostic, I have no flock to rouse up to oppose these lunatics. But where the hell are the rational, sane Christian sects and churches? All I can do is rant on line, but many of you belong to congregations that have many members and voices that can be heard.

And please, don't try to lay this one on the right-wing media. The majority of Christians in this country are not of the Robertson, Dobson, Falwell ilk. If you raised your voices loud enough, Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Novak and all the rest of the wingnuts wouldn't be able to silence you.

Governors Pataki of NY and Romney of Mass have always been pro-choice. All of a sudden (with the 2008 presidential nomination in mind) they're switching positions and making speeches to make them acceptable to the lunatic fringe. When supposedly "intelligent" politicians are caving in to the forces of ignorance, it tells you where we are.

Many religious leaders spoke out loudly and strongly against the Vietnam War and helped to end it. We need their voices now more than ever.

1. Squeeky wheels...
Getting all the grease.

I wonder how God feels about all those loons trying to take away the free will he gave us? Seems to me if he wanted His laws forced upon everyone, there would have been no need for this "test" of human life.

2. LIbby Pataki
is well known for her fund raising for Planned Parenthood. But now all of a sudden, George is claiming to be ProLife?

This gives even MORE credence to the John and Jane Roberts situation. SHE is a member of the Feminists for Life, but he will NOT vote to overturn Roe?

4. AU has been fighting the Religious Right for years.
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State is an alliance of mostly religious leaders (although they also emrace atheists and agnostics) they fought against the original Konservative Kristian Koalition. They were among the first to raise warning bells when the new group of Dominionists began rearing it's ugly head.
Check them out at www.au.org .

Also, there's the Interfaith Alliance:
"The Interfaith Alliance describes itself as 'the faith-based voice countering the radical right and promoting the positive role of religion.' "
check them out at www.interfaithalliance.org .

These are grass-roots organizations, but they are well organized. They also need our help. They are open to atheists, agnostics, and free-thinkers like myself.

I hope all of DU will check them out, see they are fighting the good fight that we are fighting, and support them in anyway we can.

You said this very well. Their agenda is a threat to the Constitutional democracy that is slipping away from us.

***PS: recommended.
