Poll question: POLL: best term for nationwide stay home/ sick out/general strike etc.
This is a protest tool that has been used by the police unions with the "blue flu" for undeclared sick out strikes when striking was illegal.

In Europe, they do this nationwide and call it a general strike, but it doesn't have the term and practice is virtually unknown here.

This needs to be part of our tool kit to bring down the far right.

If even a third of the non-republicans in America stayed home from work on the same day, their absence would be noticed and FELT even in the media didn't cover it.

Before we can plan one though, we need a name that is both instantly recognizable and explanatory. Here's some ideas, and of course add your own too.

1. I kind of like
National Day Of Mourning. We should have one about once a month till the Iraq occupation ends. More frequently if things get any worse.

2. This would work if it were done.
Financial disruption is the only language these assholes respond to. If we really organized that or any form of financially disruptive behaviors you can bet these mammon loving assholes would bend!

getting people to wake to the wrongness of this administration.

4. Call it a General Strike. Which makes it a revolution.
Back in the '60s, I remember a couple of guys in one of the multitude of leftist organizations, ADVOCATED a "General Strike". They were convicted of subversion and went to prison. The convictions were later overturned, but I don't know if the law in California that makes it illegal to even talk about a General Strike is still there.

7. I am not going to participate in something like this
I can't afford to lose my job. I am sure I am not alone in this; too many people would get fired over it.

9. what if like cop blue flu, you didn't tell them why you were gone?
part of this could be psychological warfare. Every business has a certain number of employees who are out sick or playing hookie--and the owners would wonder how many of them are participating in this blue flu. Maybe NONE would be--but they'd still wonder.

On the other hand, valid points have been made about hourly workers that get canned for being 5 minutes late or calling in sick ever.
