CNN: Soldier's mom digs in near Bush Ranch
Soldier's mom digs in near Bush ranch
Sunday, August 7, 2005; Posted: 5:31 p.m. EDT (21:31 GMT)

CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) -- A mother whose son was killed in Iraq says she is prepared to continue her protest outside President Bush's ranch through August until she is granted an opportunity to speak with him.

Later, in a TV interview, a Democratic senator from California said the episode evokes images that were commonplace during the Vietnam War.
<snip>

"I think the president ought to meet with this mother," said Sen. George Allen, a Virginia Republican. "What I would say to her is her son will always be remembered as a great hero and a patriot, advanced freedom in Iraq and the Middle East, has made this country more secure."

Boxer said her own message would be different: "I would tell her to do everything she could to spare other families this grief, to get us off this cycle of violence."

3. I agree-- the MSM did their best to marginalize the antiwar movement...
...two years ago. This is a real change.

8. I hope that doesn't happen
:\ I worry about that myself and I hope it doesn't happen. These people will do anything to hold power.

4. I wish CNN would do a 24/7 Cindy Cam from Texas!
Wouldn't that ROCK? I would watch! I'm glad they're covering this. I must say, I am SHOCKED that they are. They must be reading the polls and decided the idiot is going down...so they better get onboard with the 'good guys.'

6. this is a heaven-sent media opportunity
I'm telling you. Bored media in Crawford means they would cover almost anything.
Lucky for them, they've been handed some real news.

5. bush would be smart to meet with her asap and get her out of the
spotlight. But I bet he won't.

The longer they let her make her stand, the worse it's going to be for them.

He'd be wise to meet with her - bring her into that photo op farmhouse and get her pix on the White House website.

But he will not. Cindy Sheehan made sure of that when she yelled to Barbara Bush that she should be ashamed of her son, but that Cindy was proud of hers. Messing with Mother Bush like that was clever - she's at the heart of the dysfunctioning, sadistic family and her wimp son will never reach out.

7. I agree
I suspect he knows that if he met with her privately, she probably still would not leave, and it would be an even bigger media story.

They must be hoping everyone will get too hot and go away.

10. I agree
I also think that he would probably tell her some B.S. and she wouldn't stand for it. She'd probably tell anybody who would listen and anybody who wouldn't listen. ;) So it'd go bad either way for Georgie.

12. It's a lose-lose for them...they must know it.
If Bush himself doesn't meet with her, they lose in the public eye.

If Bush himself does meet with her, he opens the door to other mothers who'll want their meeting too. Can you even imagine this President actually setting up a standing schedule of private audiences with ordinary Americans? Ones that won't play nice, provide good photo-ops and support his agenda?

He can't win no matter what he does; isn't it all too delicious?

13. I think Cindy deserves to meet with *....
...she deserves to ask her important questions--and to voice her opinion and concerns.

However, I hope she continues to stay in Crawford if she is willing and able. I have a feeling that she has sparked many into action. I know that I am thinking of heading to Crawford to participate in a peaceful protest.

I could just see...Junior agreeing to meet with Cindy in order to disperse the crowd and to take the energy out of the event that seems to be building daily.

14. you get real insight into what type of person shrub is...
when he met with Cindy before he didn't even know her son's name...he said "so who are we honoring here." You would think he would do his homework before meeing the mom of kia veteran. Another thing that's makes me mad is the way he treated that meeting with Cindy like a party. (watch her interview you get great insight into shrub when the cameras are not around)

15. Didn't Cindy Sheehan meet with Bush not too long ago?
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 07:36 PM by ac8916
on edit: I found this from Democracy Now. Cindy met him 6/04.

http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/29/1434216

I met a man who had no compassion in him. He had no heart. We tried to show him pictures of Casey. He wouldn’t look at them. He wouldn’t even acknowledge Casey’s name. He acted like we were at a tea party, like it was something fun, that we should just be so pleased that we got to meet with the President who killed our son. The first thing, he came up to me, and he goes, "Mom, I can’t imagine your loss. I can’t imagine losing a loved one, you know, whether it be a mother, a father, a sister or brother." And I stopped him, and I said, "You have two children. Try to imagine them being killed in a war. How would that make you feel? Trust me, you don’t want to go there.” And you know what he told me? He goes, “You’re right, I don’t." And so I said, "Well, thank you for putting me there."

My heart goes out to Cindy Sheehan. I cannot imagine the overwhelming grief and sadness this lady and the other mothers who have lost a child in this war must be feeling.

16. He will not meet with her
at least not publicly, for the same reason they don't let protesters near him, and they don't let objectors into his so called town hall meetings. He can't handle confrontations. If he when out there to see Cindy with all the protesters, he would lose it and do something rash like flip them off or start yelling something like they all hate America. Something is not right in his head.
He might eventually meet her in private with a scripted message, but then he come off as insincere.
