The meat in the Washington Post story (on the "two senior administration officials" ratting out a CIA officer and exposing her past contacts to murder by terrorists) comes from yet another SrAdmOf.

TPS's Josh Marshall ominously states "the piece gives me a pretty good hunch who the 'senior administration official' is."

Well I don't know who it is! Who would do the ratting on the rats? The modern Deepthroat could be the CIA's George Tenet, State's Colin Powell, Loose Cannon Rumsfeld, or even Makavelli Rove doing some harsh damage control.

Who would know about "two top White House Officials".

List them.

4. He thinks it's Tenet

Although he says he could easily be mistaken (see below). The interesting thing is if it is Tenet then his falling on his sword over the 16 words in the State of the Union speech was very interesting. Did Tenet know then, when he took the fall for bu$h, who these WH leakers were? Has he been setting them up all along? Bidding his time to slam the trap shut on them?

We'll see.

Clearly, this is in part an intelligence story since it involves the CIA. So her work on this story could be certainly be explained by the clear CIA dimension of the issue. But it's really mainly a White House story. If Tenet were the senior administration official, though, it would make a lot of sense that Priest's byline would be there.

This possible inference I'm drawing about Dana Priest is very speculative. It's a thin reed. But I think it's worth considering, given that I think there are other clues pointing in the direction of the CIA.

6. My early money is on Andy Card.

He is the only inner circle guy with a history of the only previous slip. I think it was an interview with Ron Brownstein (?) several months ago. And he seems like the closest to decent among the WH gang.

And his 'revenge' motive is only half of it: intimidation and chilling effect was the main motive, which in my fantasy makes it fall under a provision of the unPatriot Act. HeeHee.
