Crawford authorities arrest five in Bush protest
Crawford authorities arrest five in Bush protest
Submitted by davidswanson on Sun, 2005-08-07 23:26. Media
By MIKE ANDERSON Tribune-Herald staff writer

CRAWFORD — Authorities arrested five protesters Saturday who were among a group of about 100 in Crawford attempting to demonstrate on the road leading to the Western White House. President Bush and Australian Prime Minister John Howard had spent Friday and Saturday in meetings and relaxing at the ranch.

The group had traveled to Central Texas in a caravan of about 30 vehicles after an Austin rally protesting the policies of the Bush administration. The group was a conglomeration of several smaller groups with disparate beefs with the federal government on issues from workers' rights to the environment. All, though, were set to protest the recent war in Iraq.

The caravan arrived in Crawford about 7 p.m., coming to a stop when it reached a line of about 35 officers blocking Prairie Chapel Road at the city limits. Though Bush was at the ranch at the time, Howard had left hours earlier.

The group parked its vehicles and got out, carrying signs with such slogans as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Impeach Bush." Some participants carried coffins fashioned out of black-painted cardboard, filled with stuffed animals, covered in red dye to simulate blood.

Though most of the protesters appeared to be in their 20s, a few of them were old enough to have participated in the demonstrations of the 1960s.

Across the intersection stood officers with the McLennan County Sheriff's Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Crawford police. Many of the officers held plastic restraints used to bind wrists during arrests.

8. saying they dress like bums--making a bad impression.

....Sheriff Larry Lynch said the three women and two men would be charged with demonstrating without a permit, and would be held at the jail until they paid a fine. Tidmore said the fine for the offense is $310.

Freddi Yasinkosky, who watched the spectacle from her front porch, said her son was in basic training in the Army and that colored her opinion of the protesters.

"I think they could find a better way to get their message across," she said. "They dress like bums, which undermines their cause. It defeats the purpose. A lot of them seemed to not be taking it very seriously, and if they are not going to take their message seriously, neither am I."

After they dispersed, many of the protesters reconvened across the town at the Crawford Peace House, which was bought recently by a member of the Dallas Peace Center...

Less they're dressed like, what (?) their evening news talking, spinning heads news BS'ers!?! That $310 fine might have bought a real nice "down on the ranch" dude outfit.

Would that have pleased that person on the Crawford porch? Quite frankly, if anyone caught Michael Moore and Truthout.org's videos while visiting Crawford not so long ago, I seen no one lookin' all that good either in those parts.

Did I mention most of us are not part of the 1-2 or 2-5 per-centers glorified with all the wealth in this country. Nerve. But there you go, these folks judge books by their covers.

Im totally confused by this article. We were there today and heard nothing about this. Maybe everyone knew but just didnt say anything.

I do remember hearing about some people headed towards Crawford from Austin... did this happen today, instead of Saturday? It would have been just after we left, if so...

25. The article says it happened yesterday at 7:23pm.
<snip>
The caravan arrived in Crawford about 7 p.m., coming to a stop when it reached a line of about 35 officers blocking Prairie Chapel Road at the city limits. Though Bush was at the ranch at the time, Howard had left hours earlier.

<snip>
About 7:20 p.m. Crawford Police Chief Donnie Tidmore used a loudspeaker in his patrol car to warn the protesters they were in violation of a city ordinance against demonstrating without a permit.

"You have three minutes to get back in your cars and leave, or we are going to start making arrests," he said over the loud speaker.

<snip>
Sheriff's deputies began arresting the handful of demonstrators who had not left the scene. They were placed in a Sheriff's department van, in which they were later taken to the McLennan County Jail.

24. Is the ranch within city limits?
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 11:24 PM by LiberalFighter
If it isn't then why would Crawford ordinances be valid?

According to one source road signs were posted by the county commissioners.

Others sources state that the ranch is 7 miles outside of Crawford.

Notice how it was the county bimbo sheriffs that took the protesters into custody? Why? Because the Crawford didn't have jurisdiction.

28. Rural Texas makes their own rules and they
get away with it. It would seem to me though that some kind of weird federal laws would apply around a President. I'm not a lawyer so I wouldn't know, but I'm sure there is some king laws for * they can enforce.

I know the article says it was Saturday, but I thought I read this article yesterday BEFORE Cindy and everyone arrived in Crawford.

This is confusing.

Adding: Oh, now I see. The article is over two years old. :eyes: No one has been arrested this year at this protest. And they won't dare arrest anyone, not with Cindy as the primary spokesperson. Arrest the supporters of a grieving mother of a dead soldier? Even rural Texans and crooked politicians aren't that stupid.
