I have seen a few of these bumperstickers and really want one, but I think it should read "Jesus IS a Liberal".
Based on my Progressive Christian beliefs, even though Jesus is not physically here on earth, He lives.
When I read He "was" a Liberal, it sounds like maybe He changed his mind.
Has anyone seen a version with "is" instead of "was"?
I know I may sound really picky, but I live in a very red state with a lot of fundies and I don't want to give them anything to use against me.

3. I presented this argument to someone last week: |
|
They became enraged and said, "You think Jesus wanted gay marriage? You think Jesus was pro-abortion?" (Yes, it seems like these are the only two things liberals care about).
And I just calmly replied, "You think Jesus was in favor of the death penalty?"
Stunned silence.
These people are just mindfucked.

6. Believe me, I can empathize. |
|
Yep. I get the same arguments about gay marriage and abortion. Of course, you always get the "eye for an eye" thing with the death penalty but I always point them to the Sermon on the Mount and tell them to get back to me on that. Same with other issues. Some of what they say is open to interpretation, but some things are not...such as love, forgiveness, and charity. Based on everything I have learned, those virtues are the foundation of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
I've just joined a Progressive Christian group in my area because I have almost been forced away from attending church. Around here, the fundies own the majority of the churches.

9. An "eye for an eye" was Old Testament, not the preachings of Christ |
|
I think there's more to being a good Christain than just hating gays.

15. They have no idea what "an eye for an eye" truly means... |
|
The phrase "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" was written not as a part of a legal code justifying revenge and retribution, but rather as a guideline to make certain that the punishment fit the crime. In the time that Leviticus was written, harsh punishment for minor offenses was rather common (i.e. being killed for stealing a loaf of bread). All that "an eye for an eye" means is that someone should not be given a punishment that is harsher than the actual crime committed.

7. Well clearly he had no objection to the death penalty per se |
|
Or we would have surely heard of his appeal against this cruel and unusual punishment. Even in the case concerning the woman taken in adultery, Jesus' objection is not to the death penalty itself but the hypocrisy of men who sin with women continually in thought and deed lifting their hands to punish her for what they themselves are guilty of. If he thought it was unConstitutional for him to be crucified he could have easily obtained an injuction from his Heavenly Father, who also I might point out, did nothing to avert this miscarriage of Justice.
Jesus-liberal Jesus-Conservative--these arguments are as absurd as they are tedious.

8. Then why do you bother posting if this is absurd and tedious? |
|
Why not just refrain from posting in this thread?
I completely disagree, but you have the right to your opinion just as I have the right to mine.
Have a nice day. :)

11. I heard a "Jesus was OK with the death penalty" argument once |
|
on some crap AM hate-radio show. The caller said (paraphrasing), "Jesus had every opportunity to speak out against the death penalty when he was being executed, but chose not to."
How can you argue with logic like that?

4. I've always thought that. |
|
This sticker is aimed at right-wing Christians. You don't want to give them an obvious opening to deflect your main point.
Dogma is Jesus lives.

13. Jesus wasn't a liberal, he was a radical. |
|
Actually, he was a communitarian radical who did not believe in amassing personal wealth beyond the clothes on one's back, did not even condone the use of force in self-defense, advocated that people give everything they have to those in need, and that any intrusion on these edicts -- even by family members -- was to be met with cutting that influence out of your life completely.
There is hardly anything liberal about these stances. They are decidedly radical. In fact, they would have much more in common with the kinds of things written in The Communist Manifesto or even Lenin's Letter on Tactics than they would with anything written by John Kenneth Galbraith.

16. Yes, if fact the only ones I've seen say "IS". |
|
Which is also a bit disturbing to me as I think of Jesus as a great teacher and philosopher, but I don't believe in magic. Where did you find the "was" sticker - that's the one I want!
