I just received a chain email...the content is unimportant, but at the bottom, the originator's signature line was "If you're reading this, thank a teacher. If you're reading this in English, thank a soldier."
This strikes me as freeper paranoia, but maybe I'm just being sensitive and taking offense where none should be taken. I'm pen to correction, so tell me, is there REALLY any military action of, say, the past two hundred years where someone could logically claim that Americans would be speaking another language had they lost the campaign?

3. One thing to thank a soldier for: Taking care of the brothers and sisters |

in her/his unit. Each soldier depends upon others for her/his safety and, perhaps life. That's beyond duty to a country.

If Clinton had been in charge during WWII, we'd all be speaking Japanese. If Clinton had been in charge during WWI, we'd all be speaking German.
At least that's the explanation I've heard for that "thank a soldier" remark.
I think the only retort is "if you're reading this in English, thank the teachers again."

The Second World War comes the closest, but the actual mechanics of an invasion of out nation would have been extraordinarily daunting to either of the leading foes.
