Bush is the figurehead. I suspected that until 9/11 when it was confirmed for me. The President was immediately moved to a safe bunker where he immediately began directing calls and monitoring the situation (and making sure that the terrorists were able to finish their job, but that's a whole other rant). It all worked exactly as it's supposed to except they forgot to pick up the figurehead who was left in a school reading a book about a pet goat.

is fifteen of the nineteen supposivley hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and they let the BinLaden family get away before being questioned and Poppy Bush was in a hotel room watching the attacks happen on the news with a BinLaden!!!!!!! 10. for those who may not know, our relationship with Saudi Arabia . . .

goes back a l-o-o-o-o-n-g time . . . when I was in high school in the early 60s, my dad was just finishing up a 20-year career as an Army officer, and we lived in military housing close to an Air Force base and several Army anti-aircraft missile installations . . .

I recall frequently hearing about groups of Saudi military personnel who were in the area being trained in this or that at these local bases . . . most of them, as I recall, were pilots, probably learning to fly American jets that were being sold to their country . . .

but there were other kinds of military personnel here for training as well, and my dad (who was base commander of one of the missile sites) was involved in these training activities every so often . . . since it was all highly classified, I never did know exactly what he was training them in, but it had to be something involving anti-aircraft missiles . . .

the only point I'm making is that, from personal experience, I can attest that the very close US/Saudi relationship goes back almost a half century at least . . .

on edit: btw, I've got a great story about my excursions to my dad's missile base, and playing with Nike missiles as a 12-year-old . . . if anyone's interested . . . :)

I never used to take Bush Sr. seriously. I mean, c'mon, the way he looks, that flat nasal whine of his? He always reminded me of a pencil-pushing, paper-shuffling career bureaucrat. Hell, even Homer Simpson made him look like a fool. I was judging the book by the cover, though, and boy, was I wrong. I've done a lot of reading the last few years and now know so much more than I used to about what this family is really like.
