How can a neo-con be a Christian?
As I understand the teachings of Jesus Christ, it does not seem to me as though a Neo-con could conceivably be a real Christian;

Luke 10:25-37 - The Parable of The Good Samaritan - Says that we need to help those in trouble, and that ALL men are your neighbors. It does not say that only straight people are your neighbors. It does not say that only Christian people are your neighbors. It does not say that only Republican people are your neighbors. For an example of Neo-con hypocrisy on this topic one need only look at the recent and continuing attacks on Andy Stephenson; We, many of us non-Christians rose up to help this sick man and the Neo-cons did their best to prevent us from helping him. Their reasons; First, a deep and abiding homophobia, which shows up in both their attacks on Andy and on me. Second, that we are not Republicans. To a Neo-con, death is too good for a "fag" or for anybody who opposes their Fearless Leader.

Matthew 18:21-19:1 - The Parable of The Unmerciful Servant - Says that we need to forgive our debtors, and that we shouldn't be hypocrites about it. For an example of Neo-con hypocrisy on this topic, we need only look at the bankruptcy bill, and the Neo-con vendettas against those who offended them long ago, like Jane Fonda.

Matthew 6:24-34 (and Luke 12:24-27) - The Parable of The Birds of Heaven and The Lilies of the Field - You cannot serve God and also seek after material wealth. For an example you need only look at "The Prayer of Jabez", which perverts the Bible into a black magickal tool of greed. Or the burying of a St. Joseph statue in the back yard to get a house to sell. Both are examples of perverting the words of Christianity as a tool to serve Mammon.

Matthew 22:37-39 - "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." For an example of Neo-con hypocrisy on this one, you only need look to the pronouncements of PNAC and the aggressive war fought with Iraq, abandoning all diplomacy. All men are neighbors, as we established above. And are not Iraqis men? More on this topic; John 14:27 - Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Matthew 5:8-9 - "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

I could cite MANY more verses of scripture in Christ's own words.

I ask you, and I ask you neo-cons who hang on my every word; How can you call yourself a Christian without the words lodging in your throats and choking you to death?

1. I don't think a neo-con can be a Christian. Absence of
compassion testifies to the absence of Jesus in one's heart.

4. Simple, neo-cons do not subscribe to the Gospels
I call them Paulians not Christians. And they are more interested in Revelations and the Old Testament. To me the Paulian neo-cons are more Judaic law than Christ's parables.

5. Good point.
hypocrisy maybe?

I personally believe Bush as got 'em all FOOLED. Ever notice how when his numbers drop or his policies fail, he pulls out the 'ol Christian Right lingo to pull 'em back in line?

Example: Intelligent Design. He doesn't give a sphinxs' betoot about intelligent design. But this administration knows that if you create a cultural war by bringing up a controversial religious issue, you can easily up Bush's numbers while at the same time taking the focus of his failing Iraq war, Plamegate, and increasing terrorism.

Oh yeah, PLAMEGATE...

9. The Devil is a trickster.
He will not appear to you with horns and flames but cloaked in the holy robes of God and speaking the words of Christ.

Only listen carefully and you will hear, squirming underneath the words of faith and glory, the forked tongue of an evil so pure that it is nearly invisible.

Beware, thou who believeth the word of God. Your blind faith may lead you straight into the neverending depths of HELL!

Dang! I rite good! Hyuk!

16. There's nothing "blind" about my faith
and HELL is not my final destination.

Those who use the word of God to get people to do evil were foretold in Revelations as false prophets.

However, Bush couldn't be the AC as he is too butt-ugly and it was foretold that the AC will be handsome, intelligent, charismatic and smoooooooooooooth. Definitely not Bush!

That board is a HAVEN for neocon "Christian" activity.

11. Actually, no one can call themselves a Christian
"I am the Path. I am the Way". Christianity is a journey. People who proclaim themselves Christians claim to already have attained the goal of becoming a Christian -- which is not their judgment to make. That belongs to a higher power.
So...those claiming to be Christians don't really understand Christianity.
Reading the Bible would help.

13. Do the neocons actually claim to be Christian?
I wasn't under the impression that they did (note: I stated impression; my impressions can be VERY wrong). I thought they made an alliance with the wacko Christian right ... but claimed no adherence to religion themselves (?).

18. I think it's more an alliance ...
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 12:49 PM by etherealtruth
I don't think the "real" neocons give a rats behind about the Xtian RW agenda ... They throw them enough bones to keep their votes, but have zero interest in anything but their votes.

I just see it as voting block manipulation (I must grudgingly add, masterful manipulation).

The Chimp was a perfect "neocon" candidate ------long personal and family ties to the neocon movement and as a "born-again" great appeal to the "religiously insane".

19. I'm going to guess
that a higher power would say....NO.
But the people I know farthest along the path are not the ones who have fish on their cars, quote from their Bible at work, and proclaim their faith to everyone they meet.
The farthest along the path merely practice their faith. They teach. They listen. They help the less fortunate. They don't worship materialism.
And they don't advocate killing people for any reason.
Let's be honest. The Bushies only wear the Christian label to get votes. That's it. They have no more idea what being Christian is than I know how to successfully land a jet. And we're about as safe in their care as you would be with me as a pilot.

21. Proud history of people killing in the name of Christ.
Look at history:

Their is a proud history of Christians killing for Christ. Blatant hypocricy abounds in Christianity.
