Would Harry Truman let a Gold Star mother wait in a ditch to see him
Would FDR? No, he'd send Eleanor out to see her

Would JFK?

Would Jimmy Carter?

Would Bill Clinton ?

Would Ike?

Johnson gave up his office because he had a conscience about Vietnam

Would Ronald Reagan? I don't know, but I don't think he would have

Someone should ask Ford what he would do beside being the SOB that made Cheney Chief of Staff at the WH and Rummy Sec. of Defense the first time

So we are left with Nixon, and 41 and 43

I still cannot believe I am typing these words:there is a Gold Star Mother standing in a ditch waiting to speak to her President and she has been there for days and they might arrest her

Unfuckingbelievable

4. You know that a Bush relative founded the Mets?
His uncle Herbert Walker founded them,"The Walker family also oversaw the creation of Madison Square Garden, the Belmont Racetrack, and the New York Mets..." p. 39 House of Bush, House of Saud

11. "founded" is a bit of an overstatement
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 05:38 PM by fryguy
he was one of the partners who joined with Joan Payson to be awarded the team - a remnant of the Continental League, which was formed, but never played games, by William Shea as a third league to compete with the National and American.

besides, who cares? it is quite the tenuous, insignificant connection or factoid....

2. Would the national media of that time allowed Truman to get away
...with such an arrogant display on the part of a sitting president?

3. Reagan would.
When Gov. Janklow packed up the South Dakota legislators in a bus and drove them to D. C. in the 80's, they waited for a while before the Reagan administration finally sent out V. P Bush to "speak" with them for a few minutes.
You'd think Janklow would have taken the hint that when his own party didn't want to speak with him, they pretty much consider him worthless except for the warm seat he gives them.

7. I was going to say that, too.
Another "compassionate" conservative. At least Reagan had old age and Alzheimer's as an excuse.

8. Bush is in a jam. It will be interesting...
to see what he does. Of course, he could try to isolate her and try to make her appear as if she's lost it and not worth his time, but she is not bonkers, She is a mom who loved her son as much as I love my kids.
She has the gumption to tell Bush what others should have down a long time ago. Bush is not her President, Bush is a tyrant who killed her son!!!

I think Bush will not talk to her. He will ignore her and hope she goes away.

cause him to lose. He gave it up after Eugene McCarthy did amazing in New Hampshire.

9. I knew somebody that went out to just see the Truman residence
it was like back in the 60s, he was shy but he just wanted to see where
the "president" lived, Truman came out in a bathrobe and slippers to get the mail and shook his hand. Do you know that Harry Truman and his wife
Bess got the first Medicare cards. The government was certainly different back then.

10. Remember "Hillary refuses to see Gold Star Mothers?"
Well, here's an actual story of a politician who not only will not meet with a gold star mother, but is ignoring an entire encampment and possibly even harassing her to go away!

13. Why hasn't this been nominated? Thanks, merbex, and
you are right. In a time of need, we should be able to go to our president for answers. It's unconscionable that this twit refuses to be presidential.

16. some Presidents, like Bill Clinton, would try to win over their critics
They would view this as a challenge, to use their intellect and charm, their brains and their hearts, to appeal to ... oh wait, this is George W. Bush we're talking about here, right?

Forget it, then.

17. A note about Nixon
I don't think he should be on your list of callous presidents. During a major protest in DC, Nixon went out in the night, without an entourage, to the Lincoln Memorial and spoke face to face with a group of very surprised protestors and tried to find common ground with them by listening to their grievances. That's got to count for something.
