No clockwatching allowed...
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 10:16 AM by Skinner
Indiana is actually taking the clocks out of their drivers license facilities...distraction, or deception??? Hmmmm...more Repug "genius" at work. :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

From the local paper in Indianapolis: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050803/COLUMNISTS19/508030444

No clocks at license branches? No problem!

Did you happen to see a report this week about the Bureau of Motor Vehicles banning clocks at its branches?

In what has to join the list of Most Bizarre Government Policies Ever, BMV bosses have decided that hiding clocks is a great way to make long waits seem shorter. Without clocks to watch, people standing in long lines supposedly won't be able to complain about just how long they've been waiting.

I'm not kidding. Someone who collects a paycheck from Indiana taxpayers actually came up with this idea.

At first I thought the idea was part of a plan by Gov. Mitch Daniels' administration to dampen the furor over daylight-saving time. Just hide all of our clocks! But no, this is actually a serious attempt to reduce customer complaints at the BMV by preventing clock-watching.

2. W admin "If they don't see the caskets, no one died"
That's a similar policy. And it is working well. Hardly ever hear anyone talk about dead soldiers in Iraq.

3. Joel Silverman is an idiot.
And he's not alone...there are 'managers' like him all over.

Okay...I don't wear a watch, haven't done so for 12 years now. I carry a cell phone...a Palm organizer. BOTH of them will tell the time.

Has he been living under a rock for the last ten years? Does he believe everyone has given up wearing watches and that they carry neither cell phones nor PDAs?

Every time I hear some manager somewhere use the phrase "managing expectations" -- my bullshit detector goes off the scale. :grr:

Fix the problem, dummy, not the expectations of the 'experience'.

:banghead:

4. other odd things being introduced to the hoosier bmv
include - lanyards around the neck with little dangly cars "earned" based on the number of positive reviews (eg dropping a letter to the boss) of employees - different color cars earned based on the number of positive reviews... and some prizes for the employees based on the accumulation of such little cars to wear on their bmv lanyards.

Or something along those lines.

I kid you not.

5. Welcome to Management Theory 101
"We've got a problem: customers are complaining about poor service, long waits, and employee morale is low. How shall we fix this problem?"

"We could do a study on the causes and apply targeted solutions to the problem."
"No, that would cost too much, and we don't have the budget."

"We could do more training of our employees and pay them for performance."
"Are you crazy? We don't have the time for that OR the budget. (Thinks: that would cut into my bonus.) Next!?"

"I know! We'll write a mission statement, a declaration of our core values; we'll put it on posters all around the office and on tent cards in the cafeteria. We'll focus on a different value each month, and send quizzes and reminders to all the employees in their e-mail, and we'll put it in the employee newsletter as a headline item for that month. Oh, and you know what? We could buy a raft of those cool lanyards I saw in the motivational catalog yesterday and get, oh, I don't know...little toys to hang on them, and make a competition out of earning them."
"Good idea. Start on it right away. I want to see results before the next quarterly reports are due. Oh, and take out all the clocks, would you?"
