Support the troops that refuse
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 07:42 PM by dissent1977
I support the troops who refuse to go to fight in an illegal and immoral war.

I support the rights of the troops to leave Iraq whenever they want to to go home and see their families, never to come back again.

I support the rights of the troops to give their commander-in-chief the finger and tell him that "you lied to us, we are not going to do your dirty work for you. You are not our commander like you say you are, we are individuals and we are going to do what is right instead of blindly following you on command."

I support the troops who do not listen when their "superiors" tell them to commit attrocities.

If all those people with the yellow ribbon magnets on the back of their SUV's really supported the troops they would not threaten those troops with a prison sentence for refusing to follow unjust orders. Forcing someone to kill or be killed in the fight for corporate interests is not supporting them.

If you support the troops then you must support the troops who refuse.

2. we should get them out the the military, anwyay
There is a severe danger in having troops who won't obey orders, must less disagree with the mission. If there is enough support for this war to make it justified, surely we can swell the ranks with those who willing to get behind the mission with their lives.

3. Are you ready to go to jail with them? Don't forget they are subject
to the U.S. Code known as the Uniform Code of Military Justice. They have few options except to obey orders or be punished.

I agree that the war is wrong and Bush should be impeached but at least understand the situation of those on active duty in the military.

4. I do understand their situation
That is why I brought up how they are threatened with prison time in the original post.

I am saying that I support them if they refuse, and I oppose the laws that send them to prison for refusing to follow orders.

5. OK, but you went on to say you support various acts that disobey
lawful orders under the UCMJ. I believe you as a civilian can be prosecuted if you encourage active duty military personnel to disobey lawful orders under present conditions?

6. Let them prosecute me then
I believe in freedom of speech, and I will speak out against injustice even if they threaten me with arrest for doing so.

If they go after me I am sure there would be plenty of people to support me, and I would be ready for my day in court.

7. Speaking out is clearly protected in general but if you encourage
a specific person or group, then you could be in trouble.

8. There is nothing here that points to a specific individual or group
In certain circumstances however I would encourage specific individuals to defy their orders. I believe that this is an unjust law, and it needs to be challenged. I would go to jail to challenge it if I had to.

I do appreciate you looking out for me though, thanks.
