NARAL ad vs. Swift Boat Liar ads...
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 06:39 AM by Flubadubya
What can we learn from this comparison? The point that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is blatant hypocrisy in the media.

The right wingers threw a hissy fit over the charges in the ad that John Roberts might be aligned with, and have support for a group of "domestic terrorists". The media has already made the call that the ad "goes too far" and have essentially condemned it.

Ron Brownstein was just on CNN saying that it gives Roberts' critics (i.e. Democrats) a black eye from the outset and that henceforth, any argument brought against Roberts (by the Democrats, of course) will be met with suspicion and derision and that they have a "large hurdle" to overcome now because of it. Nothing but agreement from Soledad O'Brien by the way. I heard the same from Kyra Phillips yesterday who questioned why we don't have "laws against such false advertising"... quite indignant about the whole matter.

How quickly these Media Whores forget about the Swift Boat Liars and their attacks on the good name and reputation of John Kerry. They get their panties all in a twist over some perceived impugning of judge Robert's character... bordering on outrage. Hey guys, where was the outrage when a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war was being savaged by thugs of the most vile kind?! Huh?! Where was the outrage then? ...there was none.

Conclusion: Kerry was a Democrat, he deserved it. Roberts is a Republican, how dare anyone speak out against him. As Kyra Phillips says, "there ought to be a law against false advertisements against (Republican) politicians". Hrumph!

1. Isn't it the truth? How differently the media treated the two ads.
What happened, I think, is that some on the left had the balls to question the ad. That never happened with the right with the Swift Boat Lies. Faux even gave them the studio for a year. With any criticism from anyone on the left just gave the media reason to take the route of unfairness instead of a look at what the ad was trying to say.

3. Good observation!
I'm not going to defend the NARAL ad, I thought we could have been more effective using another strategy and not Rove like tactics, but when compared to the Swift Boat ads, the book and media coverage, there certainly is a double standard.Where was the outrage from the media then? They all played along with the attack. I want the media to explain to me why it was fine to keep reporting on and showing the SBV ads which were blatantly untrue and it wasn't ok to keep playing this NARAL ad which at least had some facts right if not the dates. Both do harm to the subject of the ads..
Look, the repubs raise a stink and everyone jumps. I think we should start showing so "outrage" also. We need to ask the media this question and demand an answer. Why was John Kerry fair game and Roberts isn't? I think the DNC should address this also.

4. I agree that the media ought to be addressed, but...
I don't think it will do any good. They are too far gone down the Republican "primrose path".

What is interesting is that, when challenged (what little they were), the SWB ads were not pulled. Rather, they responded by making even more and more of them, each one being more outrageous than the last. What do we do? We pull the ad and say, "I'm sorry". So, to a large extent we hang ourselves.

5. now...will the RUN THE NARAL AD as often as they did the SBV ad?
remember, that ad only had a very short run, a $500,000 buy, IIRC

what got it all the pub was the fact that the corpwhorate media ran it over and over and over and over and over and over and over, while discussing it.

and how often did even the 'unbiased' mediators claim that, regardless of the ads truth, Kerry brought it on HIMSELF for campaigning as a Vietnam veteran

you won't see that ad being run by gasbag/news outlets by Monday, if at all

it's over....let the dempac bashing continue

this is a PERFECT object lesson in why the dems may never win a national election, aside from the question of vote fraud: the MEDIA works hand in glove with the fascists in power

6. I'm sick..
.... sick, sick and tired of this nonsense.

Pulling that ad is like an "admission of guilt". What the fuck is wrong with the opposition? If they weren't going to stand by the ad no matter what, why did they run it at all.

It would have been much better had this ad never happened, as it is once again Dems/Progressives take it in the shorts because the folks running the show have no fucking backbone.
