Original message
I just got off the phone with Coca Cola in Waco
After talking with them earlier in the week about furnishing some water to Cindy and the people out marching.
I was routed around and ended up talking with a guy named Craig who basically blew me off after promising to get back with me.
Anyway--I heard on the Randi Rhodes show that Coca Cola was going to be furnishing drinks for the counter protest.
So I called back and left a message on Craig's voicemail (you are welcome to if you like 254-399-5800).
Basically told him that it was very unprofessional for him not to get back to me as he had promised. That I understood that Coke wouldn't take water to the thirsty mother of a dead soldier, yet they would furnish it for the ones who were making a point of harrassing a dead soldier's mother.
I informed them that I would NEVER again drink a Coke product.
I also told them that I would make sure that everyone knew that Coca Cola was anti-mother/anti/family.

39. I wish they still came in pop bottles instead of those flimsy cans
I think that's what ruined the fizz... (I know you can still get the 'commemorative 6 oz bottles...but I refuse to pay extra for less)..

6 pk bottles were heavy and a nuisance, but soda pop tastes better from a bottle..

193. They DO!
Right now it's just "stadium beer" and gallon jugs of wine, but there are plastic bottles for beer and wine.

They have plastic bottles for distilled spirits too, which is actually a good idea--I've been to one too many parties where someone dropped the last bottle of booze.

220. As I remember, it wasn't very good wine
The first time I tangled with plastic-jug wine was at Goodfellow AFB, Texas, in 1986. It was less than $5 per gallon, they had a lot of it and I needed a lot of it for the party I was throwing.

After drinking it, I realized WHY they had a lot of it.

51. RC is great, and they haved so many flavors!
Their Tangerine is the best "orange"-flavored drink out there.

Their diet drinks contain no aspartame and no sodium.

Diet RC, Diet-Rite Cola, and Diet Tangerine are wonderful, and they are frequently the cheapest brand-name drinks in the store.

I've had good and not so good Splenda flavored sodas. I put Splenda in my coffee every morning, and this is far superior to any other non-sugar sweeteners.

171. Love the Diet RC,
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 05:14 PM by lavenderdiva
I've had the Diet RC Tangerine (they also make White Grape and Raspberry as well), and truly wasn't too keen on the Tangerine. I was hoping for more of an Orange Fanta or Sunkist flavor, but it was lacking. However, the Diet RC Cola is fabulous. Not too sweet, just right! Try it, you'll like it I bet; a lot of supermarkets and Target have those coolers by the check-out lanes that normally stock Coke and Pepsi, and a lot of them have the Diet RC in the 20oz size so you could try it before buying a case pack... just an idea.

ps. I love Splenda too... its the only non-sugar sweetener I use these days. That's why I got started on the Diet RC, as it was the only cola drink at the time to use Splenda. This was before Coke jumped on the bandwagon and started selling Diet Coke w/ Splenda. But I just buy Diet RC, its cheaper, and now with this whole Cindy Sheehan thing, all the more reason to drink it!

189. I just spoke with corporate headquarters in Atlanta
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 05:53 PM by dmr
1-800-438-2653 Corporate Headquarters, Atlanta.

The young woman I spoke to was kind and patient.

She is one of several agents taking calls. I was her second call about the Waco distributor.

She said the offices are closed, and would not have an answer until probably Monday.

I was, still am, upset over this nasty way of doing business, and you all can imagine what I told her, but as I said, I was only her second phone call, so she had no idea when this will be addressed.

I said I would be checking back to see how Coke plans to play this out. There are times when they need to put their partisan politics on the back burner. Catering to one group over another will be a marketing nightmare for them, and damn it, I hope it is.

She referred me to this website: http://www.cokecce.com/srclib/index.html

Edit: spelling

45. Pepsi, I read is a republican
donation company as well

Consumers can determine their own role in companies’ political actions by carefully considering basic buying decisions, such as the drinks you will serve at your next party. If you are a Democrat, you might want to avoid Pepsi in favor of Coke. PepsiCo has given only $45,000 in soft money to Democrats and $165,000 to Republicans. The Coca-Cola Company favors Democrats, but not by much, having given them $157,750 versus $149,350 to Republicans.

325. Not to put too fine a point on it, but
Fulton County, which is by and large "Atlanta" went 59.23% Kerry and 39.90% bush in the 2004 General Election (total ballots cast 336,741).

Dekalb County, which includes some Atlanta postal addresses, went 72.55% Kerry and 26.58% bush (total ballots cast 276,771).

It was the small counties outside the large metro Atlanta area that went for bush, at least according to Diebold's DRE code results, and Cobb County -- Marietta, GA and north metro vicinity. Cobb went 61.94% bush and 37.12% Kerry (total ballots cast 280,061).

Go from bottles to cans to the little cans and then to just a drink, etc etc. It's a hell of a lot better than that headache. And what they don't tell ya is that nothing helps that headache except caffeine. If you're having trouble and don't want the soda, eat some chocolate. It's fat free.

252. FYI ... "Slurpees" are a soft drink ...
All the variations of these drinks are made by a soft-drink company then sold to a store that sells them, just like a bottle of Coke, Pepsi, etc.

Depending on distributor market in your particular community, the syrup that makes those drinks could be sold to 7-11 by a Coca-Cola distribution franchise.

In Oklahoma, Pepsi provides it. And, the OK version of 7-11, a non-incorporated branch of the original Southland Corp, is not blue at all. They treat their employees like slaves.

255. Not to defend the Coca-Cola corp, but ...
I can think of a number of reasons to boycott Coca-Cola, this among them, but just so one knows what they're doing when participating in a boycott, it might help to understand how this kind of business often works.

The bottler or distributor in Waco may or may not be directly accountable to the larger corporation on things like this. Many local bottlers take orders from corporate only with regard to the actual production of the product. Many local bottlers/distributors, however, have a great deal of autonomy in how they conduct their business otherwise. Bizarrely, some even have local and state laws backing them that prevent the corporation from "competing" with the local distributor. Where I lived much of my life, for example, the local bottler was owned by a single family, and everyone with a certain radius of his plant that wanted to sell Coca-Cola products and other products distributed by that local bottler was *required*, by law, to purchase from his company. A start-up convenience store in town, unaware of this law, was sued and lost for purchasing its Coke products in bulk from a corporate warehouse in another city.

The owner of this company also chose what events he wanted to sponsor. He was somewhat infamous for providing discounted product to a local high school's concession business and charging another local high school higher prices for the same thing. The administration of the latter tried to get corporate to intervene in this unfair practice, but they had no control over it.

Anyway, my suggestion is definitely to boycott Coke, but also make a special point of naming the individual company and its owners in this particular case. I don't know the particulars of this distributers relationship with corporate, but it's something to keep in mind.

335. from various sources,
make your own 'coke':

Sugar: 2400 grams, in just anough water to dissolve
Caramel: 37 grams
Caffeine: 3.1 grams
Phosphoric Acid: 11 grams
Decocainized coca leaf: 1.1 grams
Kola nuts: 0.37 grams

Soak coca leaf & kola nuts in 22 grams of 20% alcohol, then strain and add
liquid to the syrup.

Lime juice: 30 grams
Glycerine: 19 grams
Vanilla extract: 1.5 grams

-7X flavoring-
Orange oil: 0.47 grams
Lemon oil: 0.08 grams
Nutmeg oil: 0.07 grams
Cassia (chinese cinnamon) oil: 0.20 grams
Coriander oil: trace
Neroli oil: trace
Lime oil: 0.27 grams

Mix in 4.9 grams of 95% alcohol, add 2.7 grams water, let stand for 24 hours
at 60 degrees F. A cloudy layer will seperate. Take off the clear part of the liquid and add
to the syrup. Add enough water to make 1 gallon of syrup. Mix one ounce of syrup
with carbonated water to make a 6.5 ounce serving.

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with dismay that I learned today that your company will not give water to the thirsty mother of a dead soldier, but will happily sponsor a rally against her. Your operator in Waco, TX “Craig” at 254-399-5800 not only was unprofessional and rude, he never responded to a customers call.

Clearly, your organization is under no responsibility to furnish protesters, or any group with free products. If you had chosen not to get involved with the protest, and pathetically sad counter protest, in Texas, you would not have been faulted. However, by supporting those who would harass and insult a grieving mother exercising her first amendment right to “petition the government for a redress of grievances”, you have lost, forever, my patronage.

Sincerely,

edit- I have no idea who I was asking for...

I drank at least a half gallon of Dr Pepper every day until my stomach revolted. Even hours after last drinking it, I suddenly couldn't jog without feeling sick to my stomach. My doctor told me to cut out soda. I stopped, my stomach got better. And my teeth have thanked me ever since for no longer constantly bathing them in sugar.

To get my caffeine, I drink tea one day and coffee the next. So much happier.

87. Coca Cola changed their product in early Nazi Germany to Fanta,
which they created especially for that occasion - different color, differen bottle, different taste, different name - and simply continued business with Germany during WW2.

See the documentary "The Corporation"
www.thecorporation.com

The business of IBM with Nazi Germany was even worse; they provided the logistical management system used in the holocaust. Punch-cards specifically for that system were printed in the US during WW2. They claim they didn't know.

Not that i mean to distract from supporting Cindy.

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 03:47 PM by IanDB1

Call 800-647-2653

This was the first she'd heard of this.

I made sure I told her about Craig in Waco, MikeOnline.com, and DemocraticUnderground.com

She hadn't heard of Cindy Sheehan, but I told her, "Cindy Sheehan has been the most popular search term on the internet for the past two days. Coca-Cola will be linked with it now."

I made sure that she knew there were a LOT of people very mad about this who wouldn't go away any time soon.

I also made sure she knew this was a huge national (and international) story. How this woman hasn't heard of Cindy Sheehan is beyond me.

coca-cola bottling and have refused to buy coke products for years.
They always called everyone from the North "fucking yankees" except their wealthy friends (then still did but behind their backs!!)
I asked for a raise after 2 years ($5.00per hour) of being the receptionist/janitor/bookkeeper and was told he couldn't "afford" it. I did a great job, it was not job performance.

Maybe it had something to do with me drinking Pepsi at my desk every a.m.!!!

Coke can bite me.

The receptionist said she hadn't heard anything like this, but offered me a voicemail to leave a message in. I did so and left my number asking them to contact me to confirm or deny. I also informed that if it turns out to be true that they're taking a political stand against Cindy Sheehan and her dead son then they can forget any future business from me or anyone of my friends I pass it along to.

only caller she was aware of..and said she only had info on her own stuff...I debated but not vigorously..I gave my Name, Address, and Phone number..and I said how I preferred the fizz of Coke to the sweetness of Pepsi..and went on to say that I 'think'..Coke in Waco is refusing to sell and/or deliver Diasani water to Cindy Sheehan and I 'think' they are going to donate water to the protesters who are against her. I mentioned Craigs name and the phone number in Waco and basically said I did not call there first because I have been told they are no longer accepting phone calls..that maybe the messages were full???

OH..she said she had never heard of Cindy Sheehan..and I asked "do you read the news"..and she said.."well I am in Atlanta GA" to which I stated, "well I am in Norfolk VA and I know about it."

She asked me to spell Cindy Sheehans's name...and I did..I do not know what will come of this..but like the other posters said..she will give the info to upper management??

Oh yes, and I told her we were discussiing this on a forum with 73,000 members and here response was 'oh wow'..and I gave her our forum name...

Anyway..I felt like I was being questioned by the FBI...my last statement was..I still prefer Coke over Pepsi...which I do...

I've tried a few times in the past; headaches, felt sluggish all day, awful cravings. But I've gone cold turkey on many products in the past 4 1/2 years due to the "redness" of their corporations. I can suffer through a few days to keep my money out of the paws of propaganda pushers and improve my health!

178. Corporations should know when they support a politcal cause they are
alienating half their customer base. If I were Coke, I would be driving snack trucks around to ALL the protests sites and making a little money. Then I'd give a portion of the proceeds to the starving people in Niger. Instead, they want to play politics. Shame.

I've always been a Pepsi drinker. So, it wouldn't do any good for me to swear off Coke, but fuck them for being stupid, anyway.

I left a message telling them that I would use my website to push a boycott of Coca Cola products if the followed through with plans to provide drinks for the counter protest and did not supply Camp Casey. I do get some 25,000 accesses of the site a day, a fact I made clear in my message.

Hopefully that adds some force to our voices on this issue.

I live in the country and these trains go by with mega toxic chemicals in their tanks and then the next tank says "corn syrup". Sometimes I have to stand way back from the trains as you can smell the chemicals. Also 90% of the corn supply is contaminated with GMOs- so you all will be healthier.

When we bother to buy soda (which doesn't happen very often), we buy Hansen's Soda. It's much better than Coke, or Pepsi, or anything else, IMHO.

I just have to print out Coke's product list to make sure I don't accidentally buy Coke products. Wouldn't want to support them at all, honestly.

Disgusting what they'll do just to make a buck.

225. I nearly always make a remark about "Pepsi water" and "Coke water"

when I am in some place that has no options. The privatization of the water supply is just sick.

Mind you, I will drink Evian and/or whatever the local actual spring water thing is around.
At least (i think) the fancy waters are in fact, from fancy places unlike the pepsi/coke water.
What's more I actually do notice a difference in taste. Whatever.
I know I'm not always gonna get it right - as far as sources - but I do try.

Do let us also remember, in our communicationsa with Coke et al, that Iraq still does not have reliable, clean water. Guess the spreaders of democracy can't afford it.

Oh! I forgot the main reason I posted.

Playing politics?? So can I!

It has come to my attention that your company was contacted to work out an agreement to furnish water for Cindy Sheehan, and her supporters, who are sitting in a ditch, out in the heat in Crawford. An employee of yours totally ignored the request, despite several attempts.

Today I found out that Coke will be supplying water to the people that are coming to Crawford to protest against Cindy.

If I understand this correctly, Coca-cola is telling our troops that are presently fighting for their lives, that Coke would rather play politics than take care of the parents of the fallen soldiers?

You can count my family out of your profits!

There will never be another Coca-cola product in this household!

I just found out you not only wouldn’t you supply water to the mother of a dead soldier but you gave freely to those who came to mock her. Sorry guys, I will never again purchase another product from your company again. Shame on you. Even if you don’t agree with her, you could have at least given her a drink of water.

This was my email to Coke. Rock on Cindy. I get paid on Monday, I'll send enough so you won't have to go thirsty.

I also told them that I would make sure that everyone knew that Coca Cola was anti-mother/anti/family.

of ordinary Colombian workers who might have wanted a union or something like a living wage. Of course, the corporation split its international operations so that that blood wouldn't taint the coke back home. As their CEO whined "I'm not responsible!"

What does soda do for you anyway that is worth anything that a generic couldn't do to your body just as well? Junk food, junk science, junk religious cults, junk bonds, junk dope(cigarettes), junk chemicals, weapon profiteering everywhere, looters, corporate welfare cheats, frauds, junk and dying technology poisoning destroying, spitefully grasping, senile, and fearful of consumers who don't need them anymore. That about sums up the core capitalist values of Bush's economic core elite. All negative all the time.

I've heard of things like this before but closed it off from my mind so I could keep on justifying drinking Diet Coke.

Today, this thread hits so close to home. How can I continue to support with my purchases a company that is accused of being another of the global corporate crime families.

I'm ashamed that I continued to use their product. It won't be easy, but today I vow to quit using their products or giving Coca-Cola any more of my money.

292. Phone calls made, Coke has been dumped
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 11:24 AM by malmapus
Made a call to the WACO office, had to leave a general message (directed it to Craig), then called the 800 number for CS and left a message with a really nice guy who said he would forward it on. Made sure to let them know I was a long time Coke drinker (from GA originally, where you practically grow up on it).

Got a couple Cokes with breakfast and dumping them out now.

Always liked RC anyway.

EDIT: calling my family back in GA and telling them to cut out Coke as well.

Double EDIT: My email to kboyer@na.ko.com ssoutus@na.ko.com lbillingsley@na.ko.com

Good morning,

It has come to my attention that people have tried to get the local Coke distribution center in Waco Texas to deliver bottled water to Cindy Sheehan (the mother of a soldier that died in Bush's war in Iraq). It has also come to my attention that you are in fact providing Coke to the people who will be protesting HER today in Crawford instead.

I'm originally from Georgia, where it pretty much is a sin to drink anything else, and have drank Coke all my life. I'm also a vet, I have served this country proudly, which may not mean a lot to you. But back home where I'm from, it does carry some weight.

I am writing to tell you how sick I am now of Coca Cola, and that I will not drink Coke anymore. Not only that but being from a big family and the whole vet thing. I will use the weight I carry to make sure my family and their friends do not drink or buy Coke products anymore since you feel it necessary to support people who see it necessary to smudge a mother of a dead soldier.

I have already called both the WACO plant and your 800 CS number to voice my concerns as well.

Good day,

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Always been a Pepsi guy myself... They started here in NC, in the very cool town of New Bern. It appears they're even more red than Coke, though.... Argh!

Remember, folks: voting with your wallet, and telling those who are missing out on your money why, is the MOST EFFECTIVE WAY you can create change.

324. I tried to find Pepsi's policies
on buyblue and couldn't but(and I know this will be unpopular here) why drink, either? That stuff rots your body eventually..

"Soft drinks have long been suspected of leading to lower calcium levels and higher phosphate levels in the blood. When phosphate levels are high and calcium levels are low, calcium is pulled out of the bones. The phosphate content of soft drinks like Coca -Cola and Pepsi is very high, and they contain virtually no calcium."

Just thought I'd throw this in here since "Coke" is obviously being the asshole here.

whether diet or regular. I'll admit I do drink pop every once in a while (usually with certain meals), but I've noticed over the years the effect it's had on people's teeth.

A better alternative is tea, juice, or best yet, water.

332. It looks like Cadbury Schweppes may be an alternative to coke and Pepsi

<snip>

If you're looking for blue soda companies, though, look no further than Shasta. (Brands: http://www.cobb24.com/brand.php?increment=894) So far they're pretty blue. Red Bull and Cadbury Schweppes are the only other two we've found of the national brands that aren't red. Other than that, there's plenty of good "micro-soda" companies out there (like I assume Switch is). Bring in teas, you also have Arizona's line of teas, and Hain-Celestial. Micro-brews do not guarantee they're pro-dem, though, just that they're smaller :-)

<snip>

I've done some research on alternatives to Coke and Pepsi. They are major red donors. Cadbury's, which makes Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, and A&W Root Beer, is neutral in their giving at least here in the states. And Responsible Shopper, a greenie website, gives them a pretty good review. I tried Whole Market's shelf brand of cola, and it was delicious and not too expensive. Blue Sky soda is one of my favorite brands, but it costs more.

Also:
Coca-Cola sells Crush, Dr Pepper, and Schweppes outside Australia, Europe, and North America.

So, then it would be okay to buy Schweppes products so long as it's in
Australia, Europe, or North America.

Since its launch in 1905, RC Cola has been a soft drink that embodies individuality and entrepreneurial spirit. RC's crisp, clean taste distinguishes it from other colas, and has become a favorite of cola drinkers throughout America.

<snip>

The RC Cola brand was acquired in October 2000 by London-based Cadbury Schweppes plc. Today, RC Cola continues under the ownership of Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc., the largest beverage subsidiary of Cadbury Schweppes plc.

Total to Republican House Candidates: $11,500
Total to Democratic Senate Candidates: $2,000
Total to Republican Senate Candidates: $2,000

Except $1,000 of that went to Lieberman, so it shouldn't count as a Democrat donation.

336. Just gave them a call. Insured them that we certainly wouldn't be drinking
Coke anymore (I didn't in the first place) and that from a marketing standpoint, one would think they would prefer to sell Coke to the living. Reminded them that those numbers are dwindling due to the administration's policies. Fucking Fucks.:grr:
