George Will Does a Novak Calls Jimmy Carter a Liar Over Stolen Notes
NOt just a liar. A "recidivist fibber". No one can mangle the English language quite the way that Will can.

Here are two links:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/10/AR2005081001796.html

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/news/opinion/12366526.htm

"The role of ex-president requires a grace and restraint notably absent from Carter. See, for example, his criticism of America when he is abroad, as in England two weeks ago. Having made such disappointing history as president, Carter as ex-president should refrain from disseminating a historical falsehood.

"So strong, however, is the human impulse to believe comforting myths that Carter probably will continue to promulgate the fiction that I gave Reagan the utterly unimportant briefing book, thereby catalyzing the 1980 landslide. But to be fair: As a candidate, Carter promised only that as president he would never tell a lie, thereby leaving himself a loophole for his post-presidential career as a fabulist."

There is more of this stuff. Lots more of this stuff. Thank God for the two paragraph rule, so that I do not have to subject you to George Will's toxic prose. I suggest that you read the rest of the article, but do so at your own risk.

Then, consider sending him an email at

georgewill@washpost.com

He really wants to hear from you! He will even send you a thank you. I got one for my email.

"Dear George Will,

"Are you an idiot? More people read your column everyday than attend Plains Baptist Church. You have now told the whole world that you have been living under a cloud for two decades involving rumors of debate material stolen from St. Jimmy Carter. You have told them that the saintly ex-president has forgiven you, as good Christian should and that you responded to his peace offer with less than Christian grace. You then go on to call St. Jimmy a liar or in your twisted version of the English language a "fabulist".

"Now, it is one thing to call an ex-president a liar in an article about some topic in which the author has no personal stake. However, when George Will has been accused of using stolen debate material, and he decides to get defensive, calling the accuser a "liar" tends to raise some eyebrows--especially when the one who stands accuse is a man of high moral calliber. A man who has never pocketed money from a wealthy patron and then written a love letter about that patron without informing readers of the financial arrangement. A man who has never penned a series of articles about how California is the home of 1. perverts. 2. commies 3. lazy welfare types at a time when administration business buddies were attempting to cover up price gouging of the state. A man whose honesty is so trusted that he is called upon to supervise elections in other countries.

"Dumb ass is too weak a term to describe the George Will who wrote this article. I think you have descended into some Faulkneresque level of idiocy. I picture you, like poor Benjamin, standing beside a fence, bellowing inarticulately for that something which you have lost. What was it? Look at your Pulizter Prize, and maybe you will remember.

McCamy Taylor."

2. George Will is just a tool for a little payback on Jimmy Carter
for speaking out against our disasterous foreign policy.
George Will is KKKarl Rove's tool - well maybe that's an exaggeration. He's not big enough to be anything more than a pecker head.

I don't think I've ever seen such a literate -- and delightfully funny -- letter. WELL DONE doesn't even begin to approach the praise I feel.

LOVE IT.

4. Ah, the bill buckley wannabe, sans the brains, brightness and linguistic
ability.

I have to admit, when I read someone smart, I enjoy it, whether I agree or not. Buckley had a way with words, wit and wisdom, even when I disagreed with him.
Comparing Buckley with Will - well, the shadow doesn't even come close.

Will is a hack, with a measured way of speaking, practiced solely to mimic Buckley's truly intellectual wisdom.
Buckley would be turning over in his grave, spitting up blood and coughing up a lung if he saw what our society has come to under the shrubbists.

7. George Will needs to take classes in English as a Second Language
because his FIRST langusge is Incantations Of Jargon.

McCamy, I just paraphrased (plaigarised) your letter and sent it off to that so-called erudite scribe. His secretary probably won't be able to tell the difference! :D Here it is:

"Dear Mr. Will,

"Are you a moron? More people read your column (if one could call it that) everyday than attend the Plains Baptist Church. You have now told the everyone that you have been tarnished for twenty years involving rumors that you stole debate material from Jimmy Carter, the greatest president since John F. Kennedy. You have told them that the saintly ex-president has forgiven you, as good Christian should and that you responded to his peace offer with much, MUCH less than Christian grace. You then go on to call our dear Jimmy a liar or in your completely bizzaare incantations of jargon that you call the English language a "fabulist".

A man who has not ever pocketed any money from any wealthy patron and then written some praise prose about that patron without letting the readers know of the financial arrangement. A man who has never penned a series of articles about how California is the home of 1. sexual deviants. 2. leftists, socialists and communists 3. lazy, greedy, chiseling welfare layabouts at a time when the Bush Administration's business buddies were attempting to cover up price gouging against the people of that state. A man whose honesty is so trusted that he is called upon to supervise elections in other countries - countries which historically have been notorious for CORRUPTION.

"Moron is much too charitable a term to describe the George F. Will who wrote this article. It appears you have descended into some Faulkneresque level of idiocy. If you actually have, then, like poor Benjamin who standing beside a fence and bellowing inarticulately for that something which he has lost, so to would you appear to be bellowing for that something which was lost. What was it? Look at your Pulizter Prize, and maybe you will remember. However, I do not believe for one New York Second that you have descended in any sort of Faulnerian Idocy; but rather, I believe that you have SOLD OUT for the GOP Party Line and that you parrot it each and every day whether or not it contradicts the previously released versions of that Party Line or not.

"Sincerely,

Gay Green"

11. Speaking of loopholes, the claim is NOT that Will gave Reagan the...

...briefing book.

The book was presumably taken by a Republican partisan who was in the WH on normal government business, saw an unsecured copy, filched it, and passed it on to the Reagan campaign. (shades of Linda Tripp)

Will comes into it by taking part in Reagan's practice-sessions for the debate. Since he played Carter's part, he was shown Carter's playbook to guide his performance.

Not only did he go on-air after the debate praising Reagan's "thoroughbred performance" without disclosing his involvement, he also failed to report about the use of the breifing book.

It finally came out, and he's just miffed that people held it against him that he was such a shameless partisan hack with no regard for journalistic integrity. Unfortunately, the road he helped pioneer has become well-travelled, paved, and practically turned into an interstate these days.

It's telling that he still (STILL) has no concept that he did anything wrong.

12. Didn't know about that. It doesn't lower my opinion of Will - it was
already at zero. I'll add cheat and fraud to the prejoratives that come to mind when I think of him.

16. Read up on "Debategate"
There's not much original reporting on the net, since it became public in 1983, but there are plenty of people who remember, and plenty of secondary references, such as this 2001 reminder-column by Norman Solomon:

Six months ago, when Gore campaign adviser Tom Downey received a package containing the Bush campaign material prior to the first debate, he immediately turned it over to the FBI. In sharp contrast, 20 years earlier, top operatives in Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign pored through Jimmy Carter's lengthy briefing book swiped from the White House. Back then, behind the scenes, Will was part of the effort to make the most of the illegally obtained papers.

Will looked at the Carter briefing materials and then helped coach Reagan for a crucial debate with Carter. Promptly after the debate, Will went on "Nightline" to praise Reagan for a "thoroughbred performance." Viewers had no way to know of Will's involvement in prepping Reagan for the debate. For years, Will was able to cover up the deception. But in mid-1983, the "Debategate" story finally broke, and he took some flak.

At first, Newsweek merely mentioned in passing that Will had been shown the stolen briefing book "and thought nothing of it." A week later, devoting several sentences to the intrigue of its star columnist, the magazine reported that he "saw the Carter materials" and later helped to prepare Reagan "for his confrontation with Carter. Then, in his role as television commentator, Will gave Reagan a favorable review for his performance -- without explaining that he had personally taken part in the event."

During the summer of 1983, various media pillars rumbled with disapproval. As Newsweek observed, "some of Will's fellow journalists have heatedly criticized his partisan role. Jack Nelson, Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, called it 'outrageous.'" The New Republic declared Will to be "the one person who has been most embarrassed by Debategate" and faulted him for two aspects of his behavior: "Appearing on ABC's 'Nightline' the night of the debate, Mr. Will was one of the commentators who awarded the 'victory' to Mr. Reagan; he posed as a referee without ever making it clear that he had been one of the seconds." In addition, the columnist "knew about the purloined briefing books" but kept the knowledge to himself. "Mr. Will said nothing about this on 'Nightline'; nor did he write about it."

13. ...and speaking of lies
He opens with an invented, but still qualified as conjecture, setup -- "he seems to think approximately this" -- that Carter believes the debate book scam is the only cause of his electoral loss.

Yet closes as if he's established this as fact:
Carter probably will continue to promulgate the fiction that I gave Reagan the utterly unimportant briefing book, thereby catalyzing the 1980 landslide.

Will's slippery baseness is breathtaking.

15. Great defense: "Yer honor, there weren't no theft, an the stolen ..
.. property wuz only in mah possession fer a lil while, an it weren't worth nuthin anyhow, an when Jimmy sez I tole him I wuz sorry he's jest lyin cuz I ain't sorry."

Dr. Freud testifies in rebuttal: poor Will busily projects his crimes on others to relieve the subconscious tensions of his guilty mind.

Res ipsa loquitur.

18. Ouch -George isn't going to like the Freudian reference.
Tough shit George you like to call Professors at Harvard "hysterical females" when they go after Larry Summers who was planted there to counteract the divestment initiatives the faculty was discussing.
Well looks like you have some more work to do because now the Lutherans are discussing divesting their pension programs from corporations like Caterpiller.

A Sample of the Willful Will
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40073-2005Jan26.html
Someone like MIT biology professor Nancy Hopkins, the hysteric (see above) who, hearing Summers, "felt I was going to be sick. My heart was pounding and my breath was shallow." And, "I just couldn't breathe because this kind of bias makes me physically ill." She said that if she had not bolted from the room, "I would've either blacked out or thrown up."

Is this the fruit of feminism? A woman at the peak of the academic pyramid becomes theatrically flurried by an unwelcome idea and, like a Victorian maiden exposed to male coarseness, suffers the vapors and collapses on the drawing room carpet in a heap of crinolines until revived by smelling salts and the offending brute's contrition?

Hopkins's sufferings, although severe, were not incapacitating: She somehow found strength quickly to share them with the Boston Globe and the "Today" show, on which she confided that she just did not know whether she could bear to have lunch with Summers. But even while reeling from the onslaught of Summers's thought, she retained a flair for meretriciousness: She charged that Summers had said "that 50 percent" of "the brightest minds in America" do not have "the right aptitude" for science.
