Regarding gas prices: Since when is $6 [extra per] wk a financial hit? |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 08:49 PM by Used and Abused
No, these are not my thoughts. This question is just another GLARING example of ignorance on the Repub side. $6 per week is the average increased gasoline cost per car owner in the last year.
While no one likes it, to portray it as a financial hit is more than an exaggeration.
My God, if we each have to drink 2 less beers a week at the pub in order to fill the tank ... we're just all gonna die! 28. Remember the gasahol pumps? |
|
There really were pumps that had gasoline with ethyl alcohol added. You would have thought that the practice would have lasted, but the oil companies do not want to sell anything with alcohol, when the money was in pushing the practice into non-existance.

they either have a small tank in their car or they don't fill up weekly. Granted I have avoided driving as much as possible this summer and only filled up yesterday. Last fill up was July 2nd. July cost me 24.00 for 15 gallons, yesterday cost me 38.00 for 13 gals. I will keep conserving. SO drives a tractor trailer and the prices there are scary. In May cost him 220 to fill up and last week cost him 550 before this last jump in prices. He hauls food so the higher food prices are already here and going to keep going up. I don't know how the independent truckers will survive.

And I already worked hard at conserving and giving oil as little money as I could before *.

Yeah, the middle class in their nice subburbs within 15 miles of their job aren't going to be affected too much by the price of gas.
But out here in America, people routinely drive 60 miles into Columbus for a job that pays 10 bucks an hour. That's 600 miles/week.
Now if the average Joe in his late model beater (that was me for many years) gets 25 miles/gallon, Thats 24 gallons of gas/week.
At .96 that's $23.04/week for gas. That's about what I was paying when I started commuting to Columbus.
At 1.25 - $30 At 1.75 - $42 At 2.50 - $60 every week for gas.
And no, they can't just move to Columbus. My house was $29,000 when I bought it. There is just no way I could swing a house payment in Columbus - or rent either. Rent out here for a 2br apt is around 300-350. It is at least 600 for the same SF in Columbus.

You can still pay 150K for a house out here if you want too, but there are plenty of bargains to be found - especially if you are willing to tackle a fixer-upper.
There are houses in the not so nice portions of Zanesville that go for 20K.
In the small town I live in 15 miles south of the store, there is an abandoned house on every block. 40K will get you a decent sized house in decent condition.

My husband had no choice..He has to get to work.. and his is not that long of a commute, but he needs his small fuel-efficient truck for jobsite inspections while he's AT work.. He cannot just "not drive" or "drive less"..
We are luckier than most because he gets a $500 a month car allowance and we have no car payment to eat it up.

use as WE see fit.. It's going into our gastank..Families like ours now have less to spend:
at restaurants at the mall at the grocery store for back-to-school items for Christmas presents for vacations & holiday travel for movies for new cars for toys..adult and children
Couple that extra expense with the ever-increasing chunk needed for health insurance (if we're lucky enough to even get it) and the increasing food prices due to higher gasoline costs, and you have a building tsunami of financial destruction...aimed right at the middle class and anyone below

$6 a week huh? OK...now look at all those trucks driving past that station...it's costing them at least $12 or more a week to keep his brewskis flowing. In groceries? So every item you buy, increases by 30 cents or more.
A gallon of milk is no longer 2.99.. it's 3.29 to off set the cost of gas it cost to move the product. ALL products!
What about the heating bill.. which is swiftly approaching. Higher interest rates Soaring Mortgages Increased state tax The decline of the middle class all new jobs created, were service jobs. Maybe, Just maybe the ignorant will finally understand it all, when they have to ask. "Would you like to super-size that?"

45. Gas is up 70 cents here from this time last year |
|
Most people fill up once a week with a 20 gallon tank or so...that's not $6 more. That's $14 more a week than last year(which was already expensive). let's say these prices hold(although they're bound to go up) for an entire year. That means you're paying $728 more for gas than you did last year. You can do a lot of stuff with $728. Basically it's not an increase at the pump for whatever reasons...it is more like a tax when you think of it in a yearly term and it is around one thousand dollars. Just put that number next to your property tax and your income tax for it's almost as high. Now if you have a 20,000 dollar job or even 30,000 dollar job paying an extra 1,000 dollars on top of last years yearly figure at this time of $1.80/gallon which equals $36/wk X 52 weeks = $1872 + $728 increase and amazingly on the dot we have $2600 of your hard earner money spent on gas a year at the current rate. What's the average income in the USA? 26,000 or so? Well that's 10%!!!
You know add in insurance and car repairs and it's amazing that anyone is even driving at all.
This economy will crumble if gas hits $3 $3.50 because prices to everything we buy are going to go up a lot as well. This is not sustainable. The upper class and maybe even some of the middle class may make it through but I'd say a majority of the people will suffer greatly if this gets any worse. $14 more dollars a week than last year does make a difference.

who lives in South Carolina, works in Fayetteville, and burns three tanks of gas a week.
Tell that to the soldiers who are stationed at Fort Drum but live in Lowville or Gouveneur. Thirty miles one way.
Tell that to cabdrivers who have to buy their own fuel.
Tell that to all the people who live in Fayetteville but have to work in Raleigh to hold a job that pays more than $10 per hour. A lot of those people are soldiers' wives who hold MBAs and other advanced degrees, but don't want to work at the place most of the MBA-holding dependent wives work: Waffle House! (Seriously.)
You get the idea. There are a lot of people who are holding down decent jobs but spending most of their disposable income on fuel.
