Cindy Sheehan's incessant Bush-hating landed her on the Web site of Al-Jazeera, a propaganda arm for Muslim terrorists, and splintered her family, who mourn the loss of her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, who died last year in Iraq. Mrs. Sheehan is now a tool of America-haters. She has joined the family of radical Democrats in defiance of her son's blood relations.

17. Vacaville isn't terribly red
I live between Vacaville and Sacramento in the same congressional district as Mrs. Sheehan. We are represented in Congress by Mike Thompson, who opposed the invasion.

County supported financially for the 2004 election, it
went like this:

In Solano County, 37% contributed to the Dems, 61% to the
repugs. Compare that to, say, San Francisco County in which
83% were for the Dems, 17% the repugs.

The Reporter did take issue with Matt Drudge's report earlier this week. Drudge quoted the Reporter's story about Mrs. Sheehan's meeting with Mr. Bush last year out of context, as this article from MediaMatters points out:

Reporter staff writer Tom Hall noted in an August 9 article responding to Drudge: "Sheehan also said the trip to Seattle helped connect her family to others that had lost a son or daughter in Iraq. Sheehan said sharing their story with those families was rewarding, as was the time she got to spend with her own family. 'That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together,' she said in the story. Drudge included that quote in his Monday morning report, but didn't explain that it referred to sharing time with her family, not the president."

Reporter editor Diane Barney also responded to Drudge in an August 9 column, in which she said that Sheehan's positions on Bush and the war have not changed since June 2004. "We don't think there has been a dramatic turnaround. Clearly, Cindy Sheehan's outrage was festering even then," Barney wrote. "In ensuing months, she has grown more focused, more determined, more aggressive. ... We invite readers to revisit the story -- in context -- on our Web site and decide for themselves." An August 8 Editor & Publisher article quoted Barney further clarifying the paper's position: "It's important that readers see the full context of the story, instead of just selected portions. We stand by the story as an accurate reflection of the Sheehan's take on the meeting at the time it was published."

but another wingnut plant as a columnist. They launched a culture war. . .this is one of the weapons they use.

And it is another reason why we should ALWAYS send LTTE...and if something is offensive enough, demand the right to an op-ed column. These people attend training seminars to write this nonsense. We need to be a lot more organized and a lot more competent in airing our own views.

About a recent commentary, Cindy Sheehan of Vacaville writes that a conscientious objector is "a brave, honorable and patriotic American," ("Reaching for peace: Vacaville woman continues her anti-war campaign," Forum, The Reporter, Aug. 7). Since when does an adult who signs a contract to join the military, then backs out when he's asked to fulfill his duties, become brave, honorable or patriotic?

I consider him someone who wanted a paycheck and money toward a college education without having to endure any of the responsibilities of being a U.S. soldier.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Sheehan must have forgotten that the men and women who comprise our military are there voluntarily. No one has come to their homes and taken them in the middle of the night. These men and women have signed contracts, and if they read the paperwork before signing it they understand the responsibilities

Mrs. Sheehan also writes that she is unwilling to give up her liberties and security. No one is asking her to, but these things are not, as she stated, "birth rights." Well, yes, they are. And if we keep fighting for these rights it is because people, both foreign and native, keep trying to take these rights from us. Someone should look in the mirror and see who is trying to diminish who's first amendment rights here.

87. Thomas Jefferson wouldn't agree with this lady
It pisses me off how people disregard our own history. Thomas Jefferson penned the beautifully poetic Declaration of Independance, which is the founding document of our country. In it are these words:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

It sure sounds to me that Jefferson was saying that they are "birth rights."

It isn't a "they"...it's a "she." And a wingnut has no loyalties except to the Party and the cause.

Flood the paper with letters trashing the columnist as both incompetent and hardly qualified to state a clear opinion without peppering her work with right wing "politically correct" cliches.
Ask the editor what makes her writing style any different than the propaganda she claims Al-Jazeera participates in...or send her a letter and suggest she search for employment with an organization that recites culture war cliches like a memorized tape recorder. The public deserves better in any kind of commentary.

I guess it's 'radical' to expect our president to tell the truth about why we are going to war. Let me guess - you probably got all indignant when Clinton lied about Lewinsky. Yet, when Bush claims Saddam had something to do with 9/11, or that he had weapons of mass destruction? Silence.

Cindy, like most Americans, is angry - and rightfully so. 1800 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis have died, all for a lie.

I guess the 55% of Americans who are now opposed to Mr. Bush are all "radical Democrats", not to mention the 60+% who want Bush to meet with Sheehan. Hey, don't let the facts get in the way of a good argument.

It's clear this isn't about supporting the troops at all - this is about partisan hacks (like you) supporting Mr. Bush, as he lies to us and wrecks the nation. Many people supported the troops by opposing this war in the first place - a scenario that would have left us safer, and kept Casey Sheehan alive.

You love Bush, and his war? Great. There's a recruiting office not far from where you work. Quit your job and go sign up, if you're such a patriot.

He was an altar boy, an Eagle Scout, a church youth group leader. That is what people remember about Casey Sheehan, the 24-year-old soldier whose death in Iraq has become a flashpoint for debate about the war since his mother began staging a peace vigil outside the president's ranch in Texas.

Among family and friends - not to mention TV pundits, Internet bloggers and newspaper columnists - opinions vary about Cindy Sheehan's demand to meet with the president to talk about why the U.S. went to war. Like others, they struggle with whether her determination to bring the war home honors or diminishes his choice to join the Army.

But those who knew the young man she so publicly mourns agree that if anyone is an appropriate face for the war's more than 1,800 U.S. deaths, it is Casey. He had a gentle but firm commitment to family, church and country, re-enlisting after the war started and volunteering for the rescue mission in which he and six others were killed last year.

The Sheehans were active members of their Roman Catholic churches, first in the Southern California community of Norwalk, and then in Vacaville, the town halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco where they moved when Casey was 14. Stefanie Fereday-Mannel, a fellow member of St. Mary's Church in Vacaville, recalls how close the family was, and how Casey shared his mother's deep faith and commitment to the church, even as a teenager. When Cindy Sheehan worked as a youth minister, Casey helped found the church's youth group and remained active even after graduating from high school. "At some point church can be not the cool thing to do, and I remember always admiring Casey for being so dedicated to church as a young person," Fereday-Mannel said. "He didn't really care what people said or thought. He had very strong values about his family and church."

I was heartbroken for Cindy when I came across two pieces in your paper about her that show no compassion for her situation in any way. (Nancy Smith 8/13 and Catherine Moy 8/12)

So to balance that I am writing from all the way over here in Maine to tell you all that I love Cindy Sheehan. I heard her speak at a Fair here in my area and when she read the poem her daughter wrote in memory of Casey I couldn't hold back my tears.

The local women who wrote about Cindy had a lot to say about her, none of it good. But have they met her? Spent time with her? Do they know the good she has done in the world as a youth minister or how the son she lost followed in her footsteps to also do good in the world?

How can they uphold her noble son and yet excoriate one of the people most responsible for molding him into who he was? They should thank her for raising up such a wonderful young man. Then they should grieve at his passing with her. Even if they do not agree with her questions about his death (and what loving mother would not ask "Why?!") is it really necessary to trash and degrade her in this way?

When I get the feeling that something like 40% of Americans are as evil and hateful as the author of that piece I feel tempted to wish that somehow Al Queda could find a way to cure this country's ills by just "taking out" that 40%. Guess what, genius? Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Pull your head out of the sand and focus on what the liar in thief is doing and saying.

I missed that article in the Vacaville Reporter as I've been shying away from it recently as it's filled with so much vile hatred toward Cindy in the LTTE's. Here's a sampling:

Military mom insulted by actions


As a military mom, I feel I must write this letter. No one who has not lost a son or daughter can even imagine Cindy Sheehan's loss, however, that's where my empathy for her ends.

Her actions are an insult to the pride military moms and dads have for our sons and daughters serving in our all-voluntary armed forces.

In my opinion, a mother who disgraces the memory of her son or daughter in such a manner fighting a sad war within herself.

Servicemen, women simply cannot just walk away


The mother of Casey Sheehan, Cindy of Vacaville, apparently thinks that if you join the military and then are called on to do what your country needs of you, you do not have to go if your views differ from what our government's views are and there should be no punishment.

What about World War I? The United States was not attacked. If everyone then thought like Mrs. Sheehan and had not joined in the fight and just walked off because they did not believe in war, where do you think we would be today?

I do believe our government makes mistakes, but in time of war is not the time to protest. You have to trust the government, because it has kept this country the best in the world.

It is so easy to blame just one person and that is President George W. Bush. But the fact is he cannot do anything without approval of Congress. That is way too many people to blame when you can just pick one and pass the blame to him.

Mrs. Sheehan thinks that Kevin Benderman was "brave, honorable and patriotic American" ("Reaching for peace: Vaca woman continues her anti-war campaign," Forum, The Reporter, Aug.7) He refused to go to Iraq, but should not be punished. I guess we should just let everyone join the military and train them and give them an education to better their life for the future. If they do not want to do what the government wants in return, then that is OK.

It seems like people think their freedom of speech makes them patriotic, but that is not the case. It is people like me and our ancestors who fought for that right, because not all Americans are out for a free ride.

I feel bad that Mrs. Sheehan lost a son, but she is not helping by protesting. Just ask many of we Vietnam veterans what we thought about protesters and we will say that we hated them.

No one likes war, but the fact is we are in one. We need to show the enemy we are not going to back down. Does anyone honestly think that if we pull out that there will never be another attack like that on Sept. 11, 2001? That was before we went over there and the terrorists say they are doing what they are doing now because we are in their country and will stop when we leave. Hopefully, because we went to their front door, they will have a harder time reaching each of our front doors. They would like for us to back off so they can reach our collective front door with a lot more ease.

So, I guess anyone in our military who does not want to fight or believe in what we are doing, can all go home. There will be no punishment and they will still be a hero because they joined the military and let people think they could count on them, but did nothing in return. Real Americans join the military knowing the risk and would not want someone in their family working against them just because the did not think the same way. They need everyone behind them, even if it is their son or daughter over there, because they are the ones keeping the war over there, and making our lives a lot safer in the United States.

Woman's 'civil disobedience' not at all helpful


I write this letter after having held off for several months and out of frustration with The Reporter and with Cindy Sheehan. I cannot fathom how The Reporter continues to give so much coverage to a bitter woman who spews political rhetoric and falsely accuses the president of killing her son. I cannot accept her statements as true, nor can I understand how The Reporter allows her so much space to air her personal opinions, especially in such a military-minded town. Does she think this actually helps in the Global War on Terror?

I also have been asking myself several questions when I have read her commentaries or seen her quoted at rallies, meetings with the president or his advisers, or the staged "protests" over the war on terror. Where were Mrs. Sheehan or Gold Star Mothers for Peace before her son was killed in the service of his country? I don't seem to remember her anger over the war or her protests that help to demoralize my fellow brothers and sisters in arms before April 4.

The other question was how could she possibly blame the President George W. Bush, the Army or recruiters in anyway for causing her sons death? Last time I checked, the Army is strictly run on a volunteer basis, as are all the other branches. Also, if I remember correctly, her son re-enlisted voluntarily for a second tour of duty.

In her opinion pieces she also refers to a "brave, honorable, and patriotic American" who decided to leave his fellow troops by not returning to Iraq because of an apparently newfound "conscientious objector" mind-set ("Reaching for peace: Vaca woman continues her anti-war campaign," Forum, The Reporter, Aug. 7). I call these actions cowardice and dishonorable. He deserved the jail time that came with his violation of the Universal Code of Military Justice. He was not made a scapegoat, but rather he was held accountable for his wrong doings.

By rendering civil disobedience and having such a caustic spirit toward the leadership of this country, whether she likes that leadership or not, she is only causing more pain in her life and showing that she really doesn't value the sacrifice of those who have laid down their lives. Her son, Casey, was not the only one to have died and his passing was not in vain.

More people were killed by terrorism on Sept. 11, 2001, in a few short moments than have died since fighting the enemies of freedom began. Maybe Mrs. Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace should move their headquarters to some other location that would give them the room to lash out at those who fight so hard for freedom, say to Iraq or Afghanistan.

This is just a sampling of the letters that appear daily with no end in sight. Sigh!

It should be pointed out that Vacaville is near a major Air Base (Travis AFB) but the main industry in town is the state prison hospital which tends to poison the well of the town's psyche, so to speak. Bad Juju, aplenty, in that town.

Thanks for taking the time to write to me.
I, too, have known the loss of a child, brother, mother and father. So I have great empathy for both you and Mrs. Sheehan. I still disagree with her on this point.
Mrs. Sheehan was indeed grieving when she met President Bush. And she will grieve for the rest of her life. When her family met President Bush, she was sound enough to discuss with her husband how to address her grievances with him. She chose to do what Casey would want her to do, according to a news report that she did not challenge at the time. It tells me that Casey would want respect for the president, who was his commander in chief.
But time changes things. Mrs. Sheehan is now in a different state of grief, which both you and I know. She is a strong woman who has always despised Bush. She cannot hide forever behind her grief, hoping that it will protect her from criticism. My grief has not afforded me such protection, and I would not expect it to.
I pray for Mrs. Sheehan daily.
I thank you again for your thoughts.

I wrote her back . I realize its pointless but I felt the need to do it. Its the only thing I can do. I know I don't know what its like to lose a child because of war, I do know what its like to lose a child and I know grief. This woman does not understand or she would not accuse Cindy of hiding behind it. It just really pissed me off.

Does it lessen the grief of families of innocent Iraqis dying daily in the hell that Bush's war has unleashed in Iraq?

Her mean-spirited character assassination followed by the frequent invocation of God's name are morally repulsive. I felt physically ill reading her words. How can anyone feel that they are doing God's work while justifying the murder of innocents?

You America-hating scum on the right crack me up. You'll say anything no matter how inane to back up the miserable punk you thugs voted for. Like him, you can never admit you made a mistake. It's a pathology; Ted Bundy, another Republican, had the same symptoms. He at least had the guts to kill close up, unlike the giggling murderer in the White House.

So, Cindy had the nerve to cross Casey's "blood relatives"? What the hell is she, a stranger from another planet? The combination of stupidity, viciousness, denial and fascism exhibited by today's Republicans makes me embarassed I was ever one. And I bet decent human beings like Barry Goldwater are rolling in their graves.

We need a 12-step program for you idiots. Step one: Admit you're an idiot and too stupid to be trusted with a vote. Step two: Admit you're powerless over your hatred, ignorance and viciousness. You get the idea.

I can't wait til we take back the country from fascist clowns like you and your idol, the giggling murderer. Here's a little current events quiz for you. Saddam Hussein was ____ percent responsible for Sept. 11, 2001. Any answer but zero means you have to stay after school and actually read something, instead of drooling over liars like O'Reilly and Hume.

Subject: Why are we in Iraq?

Why are our soldiers dieing?

No WMD.

No "imminent threat".

No connection to 9/11.

No greeting with flowers.

No Democracy (worthy of the name).

No exit strategy.

COST: Two thousand soldiers, tens of thousands of Iraqi's, billions and billions of dollars that our grand children will be paying to--GUESS WHO--all the wealthy merchants of death that put Bush into office.

This "war on terrorism" is a farce and you've fallen for it hook line and sinker. They could have had bin Laden but they let him go because Bush is friends with the bin Laden family. If all they wanted was to get Sadam, they could have done that too. After all, whatever WMD he ever had he bought from THEM.

YOU are the one spouting prapaganda. YOU are the one who is a tool--of rich fascist merchants of death. And, oh, when I say "fascist" I'm not being just descriptive; that's exactly what they are. The Bush fortune was founded on banking for the Third Reich.

Why do YOU hate America? Cindy Sheehan is a real patriot. She knows the truth and she isn't afraid to speak it to the powers that be. But people like you protect them against mothers of fallen soldiers like her. Why do YOU hate America?

Republicans hate America. They want us to collapse so they can get rich on the wreckage. They won't have to pay taxes (they'll get some "Get America Back to Work" subsidy and they'll get cheap, compliant labor. They hate this America; they love the 1870 version.

89. Vacaville is right next to Travis AFB
A VERY large Air Force Base. There's a lot of military, and retired military in the area. It's definitely conservative.

Don't forget however, that a reporter from this newspaper recently corrected Drudge's report that misquoted Cindy's original interview. The Vacaville Reporter made Drudge look like a lying fool who was manipulating Cindy's quotes to make up a story. The fact that Cindy's hometown paper defended her against a Drudge attack was widely covered by the media.

SO... they aren't all bad?
