4. I've heard "God helps those who help themselves" |

but to imply that He/She/It never helps the passive or helpless is total BS in my book.

of free will.
God doesn't help anyone good, bad or indifferent.

I think on infrequent occasions "God" does assist us. But yes, usually I think God leaves us alone to our own silly devices.

God can help us if we listen to his advice. But in the end everything is up to us and our actions and deeds. If we have a test coming up and we don't study none of the prayers in the world could help us pass the test because we failed to study and prepare. Something like that.

God gave us freewill. We can help ourselves. God isn't your magic godmother or godfather or whatever. We can't just get things when we want them. Sometimes a prayer isn't answered because it isn't meant to happen and/or there's something else in store or something else going on that we may not know about. Too many people think God is like a magic fairy or something. God isn't like that. There are also choices and consequences.

19. This was said by Ben Franklin |
|
The 'God helps those who help themsevles' line is not in the Bible. It was a (wry) comment on how the world works.
The New Testament suggests that the world belongs to those who keep the commandment to Love one another and to treat one's engihbor as you would yourself. That is in direct opposition to the idea that God favors those who are selfish and are only looking out for number one.

11. Majority of foolish Christian Americans........ |
|
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 10:37 PM by blue sky at night
believe this is gospel. It is indeed a quote from one of our older American Hippies, Mr. Ben-Jamin Franklin. I posted about this a few weeks back, I will see if I can find the link. The poll was funny.
Here I found the quote, from the Christian Paradox, by Bill McKibben;
Only 40 percent of Americans can name more than four of the Ten Commandments, and a scant half can cite any of the four authors of the Gospels. Twelve percent believe Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife. This failure to recall the specifics of our Christian heritage may be further evidence of our nation’s educational decline, but it probably doesn’t matter all that much in spiritual or political terms. Here is a statistic that does matter: Three quarters of Americans believe the Bible teaches that “God helps those who help themselves.” That is, three out of four Americans believe that this uber-American idea, a notion at the core of our current individualist politics and culture, which was in fact uttered by Ben Franklin, actually appears in Holy Scripture. The thing is, not only is Franklin’s wisdom not biblical; it’s counter-biblical. Few ideas could be further from the gospel message, with its radical summons to love of neighbor. On this essential matter, most Americans—most American Christians—are simply wrong, as if 75 percent of American scientists believed that Newton proved gravity causes apples to fly up.

17. you can't take anything literally |
|
god is, and are you as well, what is is god. that's where it ends as far as that quote is concerned. but god helps those that don't help themselves as well because outside of god there isn't. When you realize what you are, man words can't go there, you just have to leave our thinking concepts behind or else try to rationalize with the knowledge of man, a concept. We are more than our concepts, man did not create man. I hope this helps I know it sound like a bunch of nothing, but I can't give you what you alreay have. peace.
