Practicing up -- Dean Statement on Valerie Plame Affair
I think the new rules are going to be a disaster, personally. I also think they're odious in several ways. However, in the spirit of getting in the groove. Here's what you'll be seeing a lot in the near future, in all probability, 'cause I'll be posting every single Dean statement that comes out (unless someone beats me to it) and there are usually several a week. It's a darned good statement, too:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 29, 2003

Contact: Press Office, 802-651-3200

"First, we must remember the high standards that come with high office. … above all, we are all accountable to the law and to the American people. My White House counsel, Al Gonzales, is my pointman on these issues. … Second, we must remember that high standards of conduct involve not only obeying the law, but showing civility. As we go about our work, there's no excuse for arrogance and never a reason for disrespect toward others… You'll be my representative. I expect each of you, as an official of this administration, to be an example of humility and decency and fairness."

STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN

LOS ANGELES--Democratic Presidential Candidate Governor Howard Dean issued the following statement today: "Mr. President, on your second day in office, you called on your appointees to be ‘example of humility and decency and fairness.’ The American people expect no less from you.

"Mr. President, it is time for you to act.

“Presumably, the ‘two senior administration officials’ who leaked the identity of Ambassador Wilson’s wife were sworn in at the ceremony at which you delivered this high-minded message to your staff. Presumably, they joined your administration because they believed in your much-trumpeted message of bringing “honor and dignity” to the White House.

“Now is the time when the rubber meets the road. It is time – once and for all – for those who have broken the law and jeopardized national security concerns to resign and face the legal consequences for their actions. As I said in July, and as I reiterated two days ago, there is no need to wait for investigations into the matter – although an independent investigation is clearly in order. These people know who they are, and apparently others within the administration know who they are.

“But it is you, Mr. President, who should take the lead in uncovering who in your Administration is so badly serving you and the nation. These people are, as you noted at the swearing-in ceremony, your “representatives.” You should reconsider your reported reluctance to ask your staff members whether they had a role in this affair. The American people must be reassured that their President will not tolerate actions that undermine the public’s faith in their government.

“This was a petty and mean-spirited action, but with far-reaching repercussions. National security interests have been jeopardized, sensitive intelligence operations have been compromised, a woman’s career has been destroyed, and the lives of many of her sources could be at risk. This is a grave matter.

“Equally serious are the apparent lengths some in the White House have gone in their attempts to bolster their rapidly crumbling justifications for taking the country to war.

“The American public has been misled. Federal laws appear to have been broken. The time for accountability is long overdue.”

1. The rules only apply to those *starting* threads.
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 07:29 PM by tjdee
You can say whatever you like within the threads.

(Yes, I do realize you are in fact, starting a thread. But I don't know why the new rules are odious or so distasteful to some people. And, your entire post, sans nifty line throughs, would have been allowable under the proposed new rules. Ah well.)

2. Now no one can holler "Clark voted for Reagan!" until the 2nd or 3rd post
Works for me.

4. Clark is not the only beneficiary here.
It works for Dean, everyone.

All it means is that you can't START a thread saying "Dean has a thick neck!"

You CAN, though, start a thread that says "I don't like Edwards' healthcare plan!"

Maybe some people are thinking the rules would apply to all posts??

8. Oh, I agree
it will benefit all candidates, not just Clark. Personally, I won't be here for the next week, so I'll miss the "growing pains" - but I'm all for experimenting with the rules.

3. It has to do with the types of threads
some folks were wont to start in a fit of pique and petulance. The new rules will make that harder.

Personally, I like them in some ways, but by nature dislike all sorts of censorship, so the necessity of them bothers me. Something had to be done, though.

6. I agree.
I don't like that rules *had* to be put in place to control what people should have been able to control on their own.

But they're not that bad, and they only apply to *starting* threads.

5. I'm voting against them
If they win, I'll respect them and never post in GD again.

9. But why????
Walt, you don't start many threads, and if you do (don't remember one...) they're well thought out, so really, the rules wouldn't apply to you at all!

Is it just that you don't like censorship?

Or...?

I don't get it.
:-(

10. I consider the new rules to be a vile form of censorship
GD is the crucible of DU. In here we examine everything and burn away the bullshit to get down to the truth. Sometimes the bullshit floats to the top like slag in a crucible, but in the end, we burn it all away.

The new rules would forever ruin that, for me anyway. No sense in hanging out here any more if GD gets changed so dramatically.

14. anybody care to comment on the substance of the post?
Fer cryin' out loud. Gov. Dean just fired a shot across the WH bow that's likely to reverberate throughout the campaign. Like his opposition to the war in Iraq, Dean was one of the first democrats to publicly call the shrub to account. This is big news.

15. Yes, tjdee, I know very well my post would fit in the new rules
That was why I said: "Practicing up." Get it

I don't know what caused the strikethroughs.

11. I think they'll be a disaster, too.
I'm going to vote against them. And I was thinking the same as Walt - just not post in GD anymore. As I read them, the new rules don't allow for starting a thread with just a question about a candidate.
