An angry Bush trying to plug leaks to media 10/08/01
Seems that two years latter W is still having a big problem with leaks. Too bad he only minds when information is leaked to the Congress, as long as his staff goes directly to the press, it's okay?

http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/10/08/ret.bush.secrecy/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Angered at leaks from classified briefings, President Bush ordered key department heads last week to restrict their briefings of members of Congress to the four major leaders and the chairmen and ranking members of the House and Senate intelligence committees, sources told CNN on Monday.

He also called the four leaders to explain his decision and said he was furious that sensitive intelligence material that was shared with Congress was being repeated to the news media, two sources familiar with the calls told CNN.

<snip>

Under the headline: "Disclosures to the Congress," the president said only the department or agency heads or "officers expressly designated by you may brief members of Congress regarding classified or sensitive law enforcement information."

He went on to restrict those briefings to the House speaker, the Senate majority leader, the House minority leader and the Senate minority leader, as well as the chairman and ranking members of the intelligence committees.

1. I remember that well
Seems it was within the next couple of days that Orrin Hatch was out there denying that he leaked anything but can't remember the specifics. In reality it was the bush people leaking all the time.

2. I remember it clearly
Orrin Hatch fucked up royally. He basically said that we knew what was going on with Osama because we were bugging his satellite phone.

Osama then turned off his satellite phone and switched to other methods. Orrin Hatch personally might have cost this administration the "glory" of capturing Bin Laden.

4. I was talking about this in another thread......great point.
My question was whether this would be pursued as actively as the Intelligence Commitee leak.

My guess: Not even close.

5. Remember The Plumbers?
None other than Richard M. Nixon (another fine republican patriot) found that he needed to try to silence his mangy crew of right wing zealots. Seems that things didn't work out too well for Dick. The little fake cowboy, now gets a history lesson as he fumbles down the same path. Surround yourself with morons & liars: what do you expect, chimp?
