Bike Riding With Bush Gives White House Reporters New Perspective on President

By E&P Staff

Published: August 15, 2005 10:32 AM ET

NEW YORK Surely the comic highlight of President George W. Bush's mountain bike ride with seven journalists at his ranch this weekend occurred when USA Today writer Sal Ruibal stopped at a tree and urinated.

"Ruibal, don't worry,” the president said, maintaining his “regular guy” demeanor. “The last one that peed there was a cow."

According to participants, Bush had opened his latest 17-mile, two-hour, trek with what comedian Bill Maher might call “New Rules”-- principally that no one would be allowed to pass him on the trail.

....

A few miles from where he rode, antiwar activists were demanding that he speak with Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in the Iraq war. “I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say," he said, according to Ruibal. "But it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life.

6. I lived across a dairy farm pasture for years and don't recall seeing
any cattle lift their leg on a tree.

But what do I know?

13. I can attest to that as a lifelong Cheesehead -- cows do not pee on trees!
What an idiot.

In fact, cows do not 'mark' territory in the same way that dogs do. Most prey species do not mark territory in that way -- it would alert the predators.

The only hope is that it is going to bite the sociopath right on his ass in this lifetime.

23. I have seen the Karma Fairy in action once, and I am a true believer now.
I knew someone who was an a--hole to everybody he worked with, did business with, and was verbally abusive and physically cruel to his young wife and BABY DAUGHTER. He wound up getting squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil in his early thirties and it was inoperable. I doubt the radiation and chemo killed it completely, and I lost track of the guy. I thought it terribly ironic that he got cancer in the body part (voice) that he used so visciously against his fellow humans. Poetic justice.

17. I grew up on a Dairy Farm
They do not seek out trees to pee on like dogs do, they just go wherever they are when the urge hits. Chimpy doesn't know what he's talking about.

22. I didn't think so either.
Has the little worm even seen a cow? No one is allowed to pass him on the trail? :wtf: His ego is bigger than his pig farm. What an egotistical asshole.

Or maybe she could not bother her "beautiful mind" to get inside.

12. "The people want the president to... stay healthy"
Yes, that's my main concern, for sure. People are dying in Iraq every day because of his "crisp decisions," but, as long as he himself is healthy, who cares?

19. I think it's also pathetic that WH correspondents ride bikes with him
to say nothing of having to agree not to pass him. That the guy peed in his august presence is actually a neat statement. He probably will not get much access to the WH after that.

25. I love both quotes!
by bush revealing his ignorance once again, hey cowpoke since when do cows pee on trees?

and secondly your signature, "shut up and vote is not democracy" Go Harry, the mouse that roars!

Could there be a better dichotomy of character than those two quotes and those two men?
And to boot, Harry's was also ad libbed it doesn't appear in his prepared remarks! A man who not only can think but can think on his feet, wow! they exist, too bad we don't have one as our president!

27. YeeeeeeHAAAAAA!
According to participants, Bush had opened his latest 17-mile, two-hour, trek with what comedian Bill Maher might call “New Rules”-- principally that no one would be allowed to pass him on the trail.

The president's biking shorts still showed tears from last month's collision in Scotland. He took up biking last year when his knees said no to jogging. He did not fall on Saturday but some of his journalist guests did.

"It brings out the child in you," he said, according to Bill Adair of the St. Petersburg Times. "I think it's okay for a 59-year-old guy to still seek that youth, chase that fountain of youth. And I hope to be mountain biking for a long time." While riding he listens to country music on his iPod.

I have the very disturbing image of a 59-year-old-man playing "Dukes of Hazzard" on his bike like a seven-year-old.

What's up with that "can't pass him" stipulation? A legitimate Secret Service security concern (so they don't lose him in the crowd or something), or some petty ego-preening load of horsedump from Karl?
