Joan Baez concert on Sunday at Camp Casey....
Cindy Sheehan just said this on AAR. I wish we could see and hear this.

Joan is one of the best of the 60's folkies that came up singing in coffee houses alongside Dylan and others of the age. She's not only a phenomenal singer, but a very strong political voice who has always fought for the little guy . . . she's awesome :).

She was probably singing and speaking out against the war in Vietnam before many people knew there WAS a war in Vietnam.

She also has one of the cleanest, purest voices I've ever heard. If you listen to her (especially when she was younger) belt out an a capella version of . . . well pretty much anything . . . it'll blow your mind.

11. Couldn't they get Jane Fonda?
Yes I was kidding...she's one of the people the right have always used to typify folky/hippie/anti-war types...sort of a magnet for that stuff, like Fonda. Havent heard much of her lately - does she still perform regularly?

I always liked Judas Priests cover of "Diamonds and Rust" - and I remember hearing a tape of Joan sitting in with The Grateful Dead that was pretty good.

13. Joan is nowhere near as controversial as Jane.
The worst thing they can say about Joan is that she shacked up with Bob Dylan for a while.

6. Who's Joan Baez?? (cough! sputter! choke!!)
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 07:31 AM by Gman
Good grief, we're getting old!

Joan Baez was one of the biggest anti-war voices of the '60's. When I think anti-war protest, I think Joan Baez, Bob Dylan.

10. A folk singer and war protester from the 60's.
Her husband did some time in prison for draft dodging while she sang at woodstock pregnant with their baby.

12. I know who she is, I wasn't the OP :)
You forgot to mention that while she was singing at Woodstock, her husband Dave was in jail for draft resistance and had organized a hunger strike with (I think) 42 federal inmates, none of whom were draft cases :).

15. Great!
America still has a conscience. The mainstream population is beginning to hear it through this wonderful lady Cindy. And now an angel with a beautiful voice will be there. Rosa and Mrs. King, and now Joan. People are waking up to the wisdom of these ladies.

"Awake, awake, put on strength .... awake, as in ancient days, in generations of old." -- Isaiah 51-9

27. The context
is that Isaiah was a revolutionary figure, who advocated for the poor and needy. The quote was actually part of that post. I often quote Isaiah, not in the context that the right-wing, conservative Christians do, but in the context it is intended.

For eample, in Isaiah 10: 1-2, we read, "Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and who write oppressive decrees, depriving the needy of judgement and robbing my people's poor of their rights, making widows their plunder and orphans their prey." I think that fits the current demonstration by Cindy.

While that speaks to the Bush and Cheney-types, Isaiah also speaks to the common folk: "And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times," is from Isaiah 33:6. When Rosa and Mrs. King reached out to Cindy, they represent the wisdom and knowledge that brings stability.

If there truly are angels I'll bet they'll sound just like Joan. So sweet but so POWERFUL. IMHO the best female voice ever recorded...

21. Most remember her as the folkie with the unearthly voice....
And I do love that early stuff. But I saw her do a concert for a very small group & was impressed by her sense of humor. She really doesn't take herself that seriously.

Here's her website--news has not been updated since the above referenced announcement:

www.joanbaez.com/index.html

David Hajdu's book, Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina, is an interesting look at folkies in love. Sociological relevance & a bit of gossip!
