A Poem for * About His Refusal to Meet With Cindy, Inspired by For Cindy
Words don’t come easy as dying
When the world has turned upside down
And the wives and mothers stand there crying
In the presence of you, our national clown.

The truth was always much harder than lying
So you shut your eyes and close your heart
And refuse to hear the sounds of sighing
Pretending you live in a world apart

From the pain and loss and bitter tears
From the grief and sorrow and midnight fears.

Invade a country, fly a jet
Topple a statue, the crowds will cheer!
It’s what they promised you would get--
But wait! Why does this crowd jeer?

The boy king can not conceive
A truth more real than all his lying
And so he refuses to believe
That there must come an end to dying.
