"Nation" subscriptions surge. Pro-war "TNR" losing readers.

Steve Clemons from http://www.thewashingtonnote.com

"I was stunned to learn this weekend that subscriptions to The Nation are surging. And while it's not precipitous, TWN has been told that subscriptions to the New Republic are falling.

It seems that The Nation has become the more credible "alternative view" political journal as of late -- and while I wouldn't count TNR out, the pro-Iraq War position of the magazine seems to have taken a toll on readership.

In the foreign policy arena, TNR has moved -- sometimes dramatically -- to the right, where the journalistic space is crowded, and perhaps The Nation has absorbed part of the Bush-frustrated centrists while maintaining its liberal base."

2. I became a new subscriber to both
The Nation & Mother Jones following the election...after emerging from my state of depression, of course.

3. NUMBERS? sub numbers?
pls post here.

i am dismayed when the tv omits exact figures too. TV is really blameworthy... pays anchors over a hundred K each, and we get slop.

6. Both have lost readers to various on-line publications, particularly
Blogs and boards that permit reader interaction and cooperative production of content. The producer-consumer model of magazine readership is out.

There's still room for a few towering presences in journalism, but frankly I think new media is much more fun. Here, there are 75,000 reader-editors!

7. It's good to hear
about The Nation's fortunes vis a vis TNR's, but as to its having become the more "credible" alternative, that's not a recent development. As far as I know, The Nation's subscribership has exceeded TNR's by a good margin for many years.

8. Yeah but I'm not buying a subscription to The Nation, either.
The bashing of Wes Clark by The Nation left me with a very bad taste in my mouth about them.
