We told ESPN Rush is a racist, now they found out the hard way
Limbaugh's idea of commentary Sunday involved an absurd attack on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and on "the media" that have overrated him because "the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There's interest in black quarterbacks and coaches doing well." McNabb, Limbaugh said, isn't "as good as everyone says he has been."

Funny, I thought the NFL was more interested in simply getting more black coaches INTO the game! As in: diversification?

But, what do I know, I'm just a girl.... :7

6. I don't agree with the system to get more black coaches in the NFL
though, it requires owners to interview Black candidates when they may already have a coach in mind, ex. Matt Millen was going to pick Mariucci right away. I mean owners are just going to interview black coaches to just to get it over with so they can get someone like Parcells, Mariucci, or whoever.

44. If the owners don't like it
they didn't have to start it. It was THEIR idea, for pete's sake. Besides, everyone knows that the NFL is a closed universe where even the most mediocre coaches go through endless recycling. If the more open interview process gets even ONE African American head coaching job, in a league with many African Americna players and only a couple African American coaches, it is worth it.

8. Aside from his obvious racism, he just plain SUCKS!
I mean, my dog could provide more insightful commentary than he does. And you can just see him twist and squirm when he has to wait his turn to offer up his inane opinion.

I'm hoping he doesn't last the season just based on his lack of talent alone. To tell the truth, I don't think it hurts us one bit for him to be in a setting where he's not surrounded by "dittoheads" and will repeatedly slip up like this.

Maybe we can get lucky and Tom Jackson will get medival on his ass....

15. Rush
i was boycotting espn's shows, but saw this last weekend's pregame show because i was over at a friend's.

rush is terrible. his comments are stupid, he gets ignored, and he has no credibility. his "liberal media" schtick sounds stupid when someone actually challenges it. there was one comment he made where the jocks just laughed at him and then ignored it.

by the way, is it just me, or has rush a) had botox injections (his forehead seems immovable), and b) a liposuction?

he will not be fired.

I read somewhere that ESPN (or perhaps a game) viewership is up %10 overall and %25 for 18-25 yo. You don't throw away the guy that brings you cash.

I was very dissappointed to hear that their rating went up. I really expected to see a big drop on the Pig Man alone.

I no longer watch or click anything ESPN. I may have to write them again.

The only people that can get rid of the Pig Man is the advertisers, and since viewership is up, don't hold your breath.

Cheers

I also told them I would not be tuning in for the rest of the season, as long as he is there.

I am no fan of the Eagles but I am a fan of McNabb, he threw for over 60% and two touchdowns with a fractured ankle against the Cardinals last year, I have alot of respect for him because of that. His stats are great, he never had a year where he threw for more Int's then Touchdowns and one year he was a runner up to MVP, McNabb was always a good QB.

clip

Jackson then interjected that "somebody went to those championship games, somebody went to those Pro Bowls, somebody made those plays that I saw, running down the field, doing it with his legs, doing it with his arm. He has been a very effective quarterback for this football team over the last 2 or 3 years."

Limbaugh replied that McNabb benefited from a strong defense.

"I think he got a lot of credit for the defensive side of the ball winning games for this team," Limbaugh said - a much less controversial assertion, and one that probably contains at least a grain of truth.

Eagles coach Andy Reid said last night that he did not want to respond to Limbaugh's comments, but "I trust Donovan's talents and his contributions to Philadelphia."

Former Eagles receiver and current radio analyst Mike Quick, speaking last night on Comcast SportsNet's "Daily News Live," said: "When 'Jimmy the Greek' had his comments that got him ousted, I think this comment is even worse than that. I think we've progressed...Rush Limbaugh is a right-wing bigot who shouldn't even be doing football."

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/6894896.htm

Jackson responded to when he made that comment that McNabb was getting more credit then he deserved because he was black.

24. Does anyone on this thread grok the DEPTH of the insult?
My personal experience as a black female classical musician aside, I was a cheerleader for my Varsity H.S. team and can tell you honestly that the NFL is the only thing I miss as an expatriot. (That is other than avocados, oranges and pomegranates from the trees in backyard L.A.)
Steve Tannen (NY JETS, Sunday "church" in NYC after he was injured and thrown out like dead meat) and Coach Madden (say what you want about him, HE KNOWS the game) taught me all the fine points. I had to deep six female friends who would dare call me at 3:30 on Sunday and protest, "Is that game more important?" J'ein... can you call back in a half hour, please?

A "black" quarterback??? Can he read music??? And even after throwing TD's with a fracture, he's "overrated??? Mein Gott, what has become of America??? The pain I experience just reading this is OVERWHELMING. What the hell has cystbutt ever done in life besides being a hate spewing white blowhard??? :puke: :puke: :puke:

14. ESPN said Rush would provide the "fan's perspective" when they hired him
... problem is, the common fan is not necessarily a racist rightwing gasbag.

Rush has taken almost no time at all to use this forum to spew forth his thinly veiled right-wing hate.

Hey- here's an idea. Give Rush 30 minutes to say whatever he wants on the air regarding sports. Anything goes. Then, Warren Sapp gets one clean shot at Rush with a fifteen yard running start. Of course, Sapp gets to hear whatever Rush says before providing his "rebuttal."

That's called a compound fracture, Rush. Old school, baby.

16. McNabb disregards Rush's idiocy
THE WORLD MUST look a whole lot different, when you have your head firmly lodged in your hindquarters.

That's the only explanation I can figure for Rush Limbaugh's ugly insinuations during Sunday's pregame show on ESPN, when Limbaugh blithely smeared the accomplishments of Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, suggesting that McNabb gets more credit than he deserves because he is black.

I have to believe that to McNabb and his family, the world always has seemed pretty much the opposite of what Limbaugh outlined. When they moved to mostly white Dolton, Ill., from the South Side of Chicago, for example, and their house was vandalized while they were getting ready to move in, the McNabbs probably didn't see this as one of the benefits of being black. And Donovan recalled yesterday that he didn't feel terribly privileged when he was looking for a college and kept hearing from Midwestern schools about what a fine running back or defensive back he would make - guess those coaches weren't in step with the master plan of the media and the NFL to boost black QBs.

"It's sad that you've got to go to skin color. I thought we were through with that whole deal," McNabb told the Daily News yesterday, when Limbaugh's comments were relayed to him.

22. I agree with one thing: Donovan McNabb is highly overrated.
However, it has far less to do with race, than it does the usual "can't-miss-kid" sports hype. There have been many, many athletes (in all pro sports) that simply haven't lived up to their expected potential.

Pigboy is just doing what he does best: obnoxiously poking and prodding in order to get a reaction. He is an entertainer, folks. I highly overrrated one, at that.

2000, 3365 passing yards, 21 touchdowns to 13 int's. 77.8 QB Rating
2001, 3233 passing yards, 25 touchdowns to 12 int's. 84.3 QB Rating
2002, 2289 passing yards, 17 touchdowns to 6 int's. 86.0 QB Rating

On his career, 2,040 rushing yards on 297 attempts which equals to 6.9 yards per carry. He lead this team to two straight Conference Championships I believe and went to two Pro Bowls in 4 years. He also threw for over 60% and two touchdowns playing on a fractured ankle in a game last year.

Edited on Tue Sep-30-03 02:13 PM by DemsUnite
Without his running prowess, McNabb is a "good" QB. (And as the years go by, that will only diminish. Injuries and time will take its toll.) His numbers are solid, but hardly merit the "greatest quarterback in the league" status. A lot of his pass effiency is because of the very fact that he is able to roll out of the pocket and take advantage of defensive lapses.

On the other hand, he *is* young. Barring serious injury, or a change in attitude, he will grow as a player and further develop his leadership qualities.(Much like when fastball pitchers begin to lose velocity, and are forced to actually learn to work the count and mix it up with offspeed movement.) That will mean championships. And in pro sports, that is where the rubber meets the road. Alas, "It don't mean a thing if you ain't got a ring."

It's obvious the potential is there, but there are no guarantees.

41. A couple problems
One problem is that too many people who rate McNabb rate him based not on what he does to win games, but on silly ass statistics.

Football is about one thing -- winning. Trent Dilfer did enough to win with the Ravens and Brad Johnson the same with Tampa. The best stats don't always equate to a win. It's those intangibles. That's why, even though I am not a Green Bay fan, I'd take Favre if the game was on the line.

As for racism, I don't think it was and I'm black. I think Gasbag said something that was just not politically correct, which is not the same thing.

34. No big deal
Like somebody else here mentioned, Rush was hired to be controversial. I think McNabb is overrated. Don't show me stats, I've seen him play. Stats aren't everything. In the past, he would try and run the ball way too much. He needs to work on his passing game more. Quarterbacks are paid to pass, runningbacks are paid to run. When he gets some good protection from his O line, he can do a good job passing like last year when he came back after the injury. I have noticed that the media does make more hype about a QB that runs the ball himself a lot.

39. His Comments are Racist
Even if you believe that McNabb is overrated (I don't, but it can be argued that he is), to attribute his "overratedness" to the color of his skin is racist. McNabb has worked extremely hard and is very talented and Limbaugh has said that none of his hard work and talent matters. McNabb's success is because of the "social concern" in the NFL. It is disgusting and racist. Of course, he and all the other facists have the right to express their opinions, but ESPN needs to get a loud and clear message that he is speaking for them.

42. Donovan McNabb News Conference coming up; Watts comments
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 09:53 AM by VolcanoJen
Just heard on CNN that McNabb is giving a News Conference in the next hour, and Eagles coach Andy Reid will give one later today.

Former Republican congressman (and Oklahoma football star) JC Watts gave a pretty scathing indictment of Limbaugh on CNN's American Morning today, saying:

"Athletics is still the one arena, I think, that exists today where you really are judged on your merit. To say that someone's going to bring Donovan McNabb to Philadelphia and pay him over $100 million for six or seven years based on his skin color is just stupid."

Daryn Kagan (I just love her) on CNN Live Today put it thusly: "ESPN is trying this experiment by hiring Rush Limbaugh. You know, he's supposed to talk about football. It was just a matter of time before he got political. The idea of trying to pump up a black quarterback is silly. There have been so many who have been successful. Right here in Atlanta, we have Michael Vick, for example. We could go on and on... and believe me, we do, when we're not on the air!" Then, the always-excellent Leon Harris, with a disgusted look on his face, said, "You know, I'm not even going to honor his remark with a comment. I'm not even going to go there."

Let this be the beginning of the end for Rush on ESPN!!!

48. What about Vick?
Vick's a badass. Warren Moon was great. Kordell's a jackass, but there have been many great black QB's in the NFL, so it's blatantly obvious that Rush is just mixing racism into a situation inwhich it has no logical foundation, like he always does. I really hope he gets fired.
