Just received re: Cindy's departure. Please READ!
Here it is and it's important. Now I've got to run and pick up MrA for dinner and hopefully meet up with DistressedAmerican and his group before they head for Crawford.

Cindy's mom just suffered a stroke, so Cindy and her sis are on the way to
LA to be by her side. She may still return yet before the month is out...

Due to her necessary absence, it is INCREDIBLY important that we continue
the vigil - in her name, and to be by the side of the many other family
members who will stay on in a quest to affect change. Cindy has been a
figurehead in this movement, but she'd be the first to tell you - it's not
about her. Now as far as the realities of keeping the media engaged, we
must DOUBLE or TRIPLE the numbers so they understand there's more to the
story than Cindy.

So in the name of ENDING THE WAR and MOVING PEOPLE TO UNDERSTANDING -
please, come as planned, or especially if you haven't planned to already!
This IS the tide...CATCH IT!

A heartfelt message forward to me by Dave Collins of Vietnam Veterans

A Message to the Crawford Memorial Vandal

11:00 AM Aug 17, 2005

On Monday night, a vandal in a pickup truck ran over hundreds of small
white crosses that had been installed in Crawford, Texas as a simple
memorial to the Troops killed in Iraq. The vandal, who police say is Waco
resident Larry Northern, was soon arrested, and OpTruth's Perry Jefferies
managed to find his e-mail address. Here's what he had to say:

Mr. Northern:

I am a Veteran of the Iraq war, having served with the 4th Infantry
Division on the initial invasion with Force Package One.

While I was in Iraq,a very good friend of mine, Christopher Cutchall, was
killed in an unarmoredHMMWV outside of Baghdad. He was a cavalry scout
serving with the 3d ID.Once he had declined the award of a medal because
Soldiers assigned to him did not receive similar awards that he had
recommended. He left two sons and awonderful wife. On Monday night, August
16, you ran down the memorial cross erected for him by Arlington West.

One of my Soldiers in Iraq was Roger Turner. We gave him a hard time
because he always wore all of his protective equipment, including three
pairs of glasses or goggles. He did this because he wanted to make sure
that he returned home to his family. He rode a bicycle to work every day to
make sure that he was able to save enough money on his Army salary to send
his son to college. At Camp Anaconda, where the squadron briefly stayed, a
rocket landed inside a tent, sending a piece of debris or fragment into him
and killed him. On Monday night, August 16, you ran down the memorial cross
erected for him by Arlington West.

One of my Soldiers was Henry Bacon. He was one of the finest men I ever
met. He was in perfect shape for a man over forty, working hard at night.
He told me that he did that because he didn't have much money to buy nice
things for his wife, who he loved so much, so he had to be in good shape
for her. He was like a father to many young men in his section of
maintenance mechanics. They fixed our vehicles with almost no support and
fabricated parts and made repairs that kept our squadron rolling on the
longest, fastest armor advance ever made under fire. He was so very proud
of his son-in-law that married the beautiful daughter so well raised by
Henry. His son-in-law was a helicopter pilot with the 1st Cavalry Division,
who died last year. Henry stopped to rescue a vehicle belonging to another
unit on what was to be his last day in Iraq. He could have kept rolling -
he was headed to Kuwait after a year's tour. But he stopped. He could have
sent others to do the work, but he was on the ground, leading by example,
when he was killed. On Monday night, August 16, you took it upon yourself
to go out in the country, where a peaceful group was exercising their
constitutional rights, and harming no one, and you ran down the memorial
cross erected for Henry and for his son-in-law by Arlington West.

Mr. Northern - I know little about Cindy Sheehan except that she is a
grieving mother, a gentle soul, and wants to bring harm to no one. I know
little about you except that you found your way to Crawford on Monday night
in August with chains and a pipe attached to your truck for the sole
purpose of dishonoring a memorial erected for my friends and lost Soldiers
and hundreds of others that served this nation when they were called. I
find it disheartening that good men like these have died so that people
like you can threaten a mother who lost a child with your actions. I hope
that you are ashamed of yourself.

Perry Jefferies, First Sergeant, USA (retired)

38. Camp Qualls?
Just read about the counter demonstration at Crawford.
I heard that the Sheehan camp does not want to engage them in dialogue. I think that they should debate with them. Reason is on our side. Give them something to do while waiting for the Post Turtle to appear.

6. Thanks for posting. The message from Mr. Jefferies brought tears
to my eyes. We make a covenant with out military: they will protect and defend, with their lives if necessary. We will ONLY ask them to do so when there is truly a need. We will only ask them to make the ultimate sacrifice when there is no other choice. We will never ask for their blood because we want to, only because we have to. This administration, through cold and callous deception has broken that covenant and shamed an entire country. There is no excuse. Iraq is a war of pride and vanity, not necessity. Anyone who attempts to justify Iraq otherwise is a liar and despot. Anyone, no matter their stature or station. Anyone.

That is a powerful statement he made to Mr. Northern.

the enthusiasm of Camp Casey will never abate until this awful war is over, and our troops are home. "A gentle soul" indeed is Cindy. I hope her mother recovers soon, and she returns. Thanks for the post. I'll try to nominate, but don't think I can yet due to low post numbers!

17. What will the RWingers say about her leaving?
She didn't really mean what she said? She never really was going to stay there?

But, if didn't go to her mother in a time of need, they would say, she's not a family person. Just cares about herself, not about her loss. Etc.

Cindy, be with your family and support your mother at this time. We stand behind you 100+%.

18. you're right about accepting responsibility
this is even more of a call to action ...without cindy our numbers need to triple...but there still needs to be a cohesive, intelligent heartfelt and genuine focus..cindy provided that...in a way that united lots of people together...i heard that joan baez was thinking of going...who knows it could be a rumor...but a coordinated focus for this week certainly as well as perhaps even next week needs to be created..without politics..just the genuiness representd by cindy..it needs to be orchestrated so that they cant figure out who to trash next..but with the same focus...im not sure who could do that as powerfully as cindy..simply because her agenda is clear...get out of the war...so i was thinking that if joan baez could come one day...and bob dylan the next..and barbra streisand the next....one quick performance for peace...no hoopla....simple, meaningful..doesnt have to be those performers but it needs some depth...politicians turn it into a political thing...so i think its wise at this point for their presence to not be construed as the message....the message is peace...there are about a million ways to get that message out....i just think a little creativity is in order which does not create anything more than what this is about....cindy has tossed the ball to us while she supports her mom...she deserves that we put our money where our mouth is...really...i was gonna pass on crawford...thought about it, sent money, went to the vigil, have talked til my tongue hang to the floor....my life is complicated...demanding...and needs attention...but you know what, im thinking that my life is gonna be shit if we dont turn this around...nothing is ever easy...even thinking that i could let others go to crawford for me......this is absolutely not the time for this momentum to stop.....

21. This is not really a festival. It is serious business.
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 01:09 AM by BrightKnight
Joan Baez might be appropriate. She has been to a lot of these kinds of things, she is smart, and she is associated with the religious left. I would like to see her play a few gospel songs in a simple low key way. Something about the purity of her voice reminds me of Cindy Sheehan. I would not call it a concert. Perhaps it should be at the Peace House.

I would not hype it. She is simply another peace activist expressing her support.

Barbara Streisand would be a very bad choice. THat would send an ultra partisan message.

Bob Dylan would not be horrible. I don't think that it is wise to create a festival atmosphere.

-----------
I think that Cindy's message is fundamentally about accountability. This is a very strong message and should not be lost in the Peace agenda.

The peace activist cliches should be avoided for the most part. Tie-Dye should be banned. You can not change anyone's mind if they are not listening to your message. If you say sensible things in street clothes middle America might listen.

--------

Perhaps there should be a Peace festival but is should be a different event in a different place. If someone wanted to lease another piece of land and hold a full blown peace festival I might be in favor of that.

It would not be difficult to find a compelling line-up of old an new tallent.

23. Good e-mail from Top Jeffries...and Northern is a complete jerk...
a coward that will spend the rest of his life regretting what he did. Sure, for a bit he may feel justified, but somewhere in that shell of a human is small shriveled remnant of a soul. Once he realizes that what he did was to desecrate those whom he swears he will support, he will feel a great deal of shame.

In a way, I actually feel sorry for him; he is deluded and will spend a lot of time regretting the fact that he showed the world that some people are truly, just downright mean and stupid. He may lose his business over that foolish stunt, and his family is not about to pat his back over what they will hear in the future.

Any Vet that I know of, has a distinct dislike for this type of action. Desecrating a memorial to fallen soldiers is one of the worst acts one can perform. Perhaps a fitting judgment against him, would be for him to work in a National Cemetery, mowing grass, and cleaning bird shit off of markers of those who have fallen to maintain this nation as a country where citizens CAN gather peacefully and protest actions they find abhorrent.

27. Iran is next
I will be coming down towards the end of August. A buddha in the presence of buddhas. But the drums of a new war are already beginning. The missle firings in Jordan are a typical preface leading to a bombing run with the Israelis over Iran. This in the fall. Then we will really see what this new movement is made of and whether or not people are willing to come down into the streets, stay there and discontinue business as usual. That is what it is going to take. Mass sit-ins beyond planned marches and get togethers. The people are the only ones remaining with any power to speak of. These facists will do anything they please and it most definitely pleases them to begin a war on Iran in the fall. That is what all the closed door sessions down in Crawford are all about this summer. They listen to no one and they are very committed. They truly beleive that they write their own history and determine their own reality. This is key. They do not listen, heed or represent. They impose. They want the vast natural gas reserves controled in Iran and they want that oil controled as well. China is coming. China is coming. They know it. They want to complete the West Asian encirclement of China with military bases in Iran as well as the 15 in Iraq which will be permanent and the countless number in Afghanistan and the old Soviet colonies.

Will this tiny peace movement be up to mobilizing peaceful action on a scale so large we have never witnessed its like before? We will know come this fall. Cheney is ready for his next offensive conquest. Iran.
