The troops are over there fighting so high school football can be played!!
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 07:16 AM by KzooDem
I just saw the most pathetic, jingoistic reason put forth for the war in Iraq in a brief blurb on the morning news.

A high school football coach from some town in Tennessee is deployed to Iraq and he sent a videotaped pep talk to his team for their season opener last night. The report showed the players getting emotional listening to and watching the tape. While I hardly felt the report was newsworthy, I thought it was touching in a corny kind of way.

Then, toward the end of the report they highlighted the team captain giving a tear-drenched pep talk to his teammates saying "He's over there fighting for OUR freedoms, for OUR rights, and so we can go out there and play on Friday nights." :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Wow...I never knew we were over there fighting so young republicans could have the freedom to play football on Friday nights. That young man enlightened me so.

2. That's what that pig Melanie Morgan was saying, too.
Something about how all the little Iraqi kids were so happy when they got new soccer balls. That's very nice, but not one American should die for that.

Draft young republicans for that mission.

Didn't you know that when the Iraqi army came over here
and conquered and occupied us that the first thing on their agenda was to prohibit Friday night football? Where have you been?

3. I went to the high school football game last night. I was not
moved when the HS band played the National Anthem, but instead was sickened with thoughts about how the neo cons destroyed my country.

5. Amazing the shit people tell themselves
There are times when this nationalistic claptrap angers greatly...and then there are the days when I am simply amazed at what comes out of people's mouths.

I'm wondering if grace includes "and thank the troops for this apple pie"

Ever notice the same people claiming "troops fighting for our freedom" in Iraq are the exact same ones determined to take away freedoms? (free speech, right to assemble, Patriot Act,support torture, eliminate due process)

to party hearty while the soldier class gets to travel abroad".

This just came to mind:

Parent-trap snares recruiters
The tune changes at some homes when they hear 'sign here'

Thursday, August 11, 2005
By Jack Kelly, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Staff Sgt. Jason Rivera, 26, a Marine recruiter in Pittsburgh, went to the home of a high school student who had expressed interest in joining the Marine Reserve to talk to his parents.

"I want you to know we support you," she gushed.

Rivera soon reached the limits of her support.

"Military service isn't for our son. It isn't for our kind of people," she told him.

8. "It isn't for our kind of people"
the woman, who lives in a well-to-do suburb (read rich and white) said. How much you wanna bet she's a repuke? Has all the hallmarks of it-flags in the yard, flags on her shirt, lip service to the recruiter, but when it comes down to the bottom line, she wants her dirty little war taken care of the "other kind" of people-read poor and brown.

7. My son is our local high school football coach. He also teaches
science at the school. He spends money out of his measley salary to supply his students with basic needs that this "ejukashun president" doesn't think are important. And as a science and physics major, he just cringes when bush yammers on about topics he knows nothing about such as stem cell research and evolution.

And DON'T EVEN get him started on brother Jeb who might meet a lynch mob if he ever stepped into a Florida public school without security.

P.S. - They won last night, 28 - 0. Bring on those Tennessee boys!
