Question, who replaced Mary Matalin and Karen Hughes when they resigned? I have Matalin going out in December 02 and Hughes leaving just before Novak wrote his column.

Bush-Cheney White House Staff:

Bush Chief of Staff Andrew Card

Bush family loyalist Andrew Card most recently worked as lobbyist for General Motors, an assignment which followed the job of government relations head of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association, which disbanded in 1999. For both entities he lobbied against increasing emission controls on fuels.
Card graduated in engineering from the University of South Carolina and served four terms in the Massachusetts State Legislature, running unsuccessfully for governor in 1988. He first met George W. Bush in Kennebunkport, Maine, where the Bushes have a summer home. (See www.politicsandelections.com “Hot News” under U.S. politics for details.)
Under Pres. Ronald Reagan, Vice President George Bush got Card a White House job as liaison to state elected officials. Card ran Bush, Sr.’s first New Hampshire primary campaign in 1988. Eventually Card served as Bush, Sr.’s Deputy Chief of Staff, and then Bush appointed Card Secretary of Transportation in Bush’s last year in office. Now Card will serve George W. Bush as Chief of Staff.


Senior Advisor to the President Karl Rove

As Senior Advisor to the President, Karl Rove will be responsible for the Office of Political Affairs, the Office of Public Liaison, and the Office of Strategic Initiatives.
Rove served as chief strategist for the Bush presidential campaign, and previously headed his own political public affairs firm, Karl Rove & Company.
Rove attended the University of Utah, the University of Texas-Austin, and George Mason University. He has taught at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and in the Journalism Department of the University of Texas-Austin.


General Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales

As General Counsel to the White House, Alberto Gonzales will be one of President Bush’s top legal advisers. He has served on the Supreme Court of Texas since January, 1999. Prior to that appointment, he served as Texas Secretary of State, acting as Senior Adviser to the Governor, Chief Elections Officer for the state, and the Governor’s lead liaison on Mexico and border issues. From 1995-1997 he was General Counsel in the Governor’s office.
Gonzales served in the Air Force from 1973-1975, having graduated from Rice University and earning a law degree from Harvard Law School.


Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley

Hadley served as Assistant Secretary of defense for International Security Policy (1989-1993) under Pres. George H.W. Bush with responsibility for defense policy on NATO and Western Europe nuclear weapons and ballistic missile defense, and arms control. He was foreign policy adviser to the Bush-Cheney campaign, and is currently a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Shea & Gardner.
Hadley is a Principal in the Scowcroft Group, Inc., a member of the Department of Defense Policy Board, and the National Security Advisory Panel to the Director of Central Intelligence. He is also a Director of the U.S. Institute of Peace.
Hadley’s BA is from Cornell University and his law degree is from Yale Law School.
He will be working with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.


Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary Harriet Miers

Harriet Miers has been Co-Managing Partner of the Locke Liddell & Sapp law firm since 1999 and practicing law for 28 years. She has also taught law as a Trial Advocacy Instructor at Southern Methodist University School of Law and is a former National Institute of Trial Advocacy Program Instructor. She is a former president of the State Bar of Texas, with a BS and JD. From Southern Methodist University. Miers was named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America and one of the 50 most influential women lawyers in America by the National Law Journal.


Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Cabinet Albert Hawkins

Hawkins served as Deputy Campaign Manager for the Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign, following service as Director of the Governor’s Office of Budget and Planning in Texas as Gov. Bush’s chief advisor on state and local fiscal issues. He also was Deputy Director of the Texas Legislative Budget in 1994.
Hawkins has a BA in government from the University of Texas-Austin, and a Master of Public Affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.


Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff of Operations Joseph Hagin

Prior to joining the Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign, Hagin was an executive with Chiquita Brands in Cincinnati. He also served as campaign manager and a county Republican finance committee in Ohio.
Hagin worked as White House Appointments Secretary to Pres. George H. W. Bush, having worked on Bush-Quayle and Reagan-Bush campaigns. He served as Personal Aide to Vice President Bush (1981-1983), and then Assistant to the Vice President for Legislative Affairs and Congressional Relations. From 1985-1988 Hagin was Director of Public Affairs for Federated Department Stores, Inc. Hagin graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.


Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs Nicholas Calio

In a recycling effort, Nicholas Calio has been appointed to this job, having served in the same capacity under Pres. George H.W. Bush. In 1993, he established O’Brien-Calio, a bipartisan lobbying firm, capitalizing on his contacts in the first Bush Administration.
Calio has also served as Vice President of the Duberstein Group for legislative consulting (lobbying), Senior Vice President of the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, and practicing attorney with Santarelli and Gimer.
He now sits as Chairman of the Board of the Congressional Institute, Inc., and on the Board of the Arneson Institute of Practical Politics and Public Affairs at Ohio Wesleyan University. His BA is from Ohio Wesleyan and his law degree is from Case Western Reserve University.


Assistant to the President for Economic Policy Lawrence Lindsey

Former member of the Federal Reserve Board, Lindsey will be a top economic adviser to Bush. During the George H.W. Bush Administration, Lindsey was Special Assistant to the President for Policy Development.
During the Reagan Administration, Lindsey served on the staff of the Council of Economic Advisers as Senior Staff Economist for Tax Policy. He’s a former professor of Economics at Harvard University and is a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC He graduated from Bowdoin College in New Hampshire and got his Masters and Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard.


Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Joshua Bolten

Bolten was Policy Director for Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign, having served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs under George H.W. Bush, and General Counsel to the U.S. Trade Representative. He also worked as Executive Director of Legal and Government Affairs for Goldman Sachs International in London (1994-1999) and International Trade Counsel to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee (1985-1989).
Earlier Bolten was associated with the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers, the legal office of the U.S. State Department, and as Executive Assistant to the Director of the Kissinger Commission on Central America.
Bolten got his AB from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and his JD from Stanford Law School, followed by a stint clerking in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.


Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel Clay Johnson

Clay Johnson has been Executive Director of the Bush Transition to the White House. He served Gov. George W. Bush as both Chief of Staff (1999-2000) and as Appointments Director (1995-1999). Prior to joining the governor, Johnson was Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Museum of Art (1992-1994), President of the Horchow Collection (Nieman-Marcus), and for divisions of Citicorp and PepsiCo.
Johnson’s BS is from Yale University, and he has an MS from Yale.


Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy Margaret La Montagne

La Montagne will advise Bush on domestic policy issues, having served as his Senior Advisor during his terms as governor. La Montagne developed and implemented Bush’s Texas education agenda and recommended key appointments.
Prior to working for Bush, she worked as associate executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards, worked for former Texas Governor William P. Clements, for members of the Texas House of Representatives, for the Austin Community College, and for the American Cancer Society. She is a director of the Texas Lyceum, and a member of the Eanes Independent School District Strategic Planning Committee.
Her BA is from University of Houston (1979) and she has two daughters.

3. Just my opinion, but

I really think that you have to look in the direction of the Wolfowitz, Perle crowd. They had the most to gain from the 'outing'. Perhaps even Rumsfeld. I am suggesting these as the originators, but the ultimate blame will probably be a low level staffer (who, somewhere down the road, will receive a pardon and a huge payoff- 'under the radar' of course)
