Joan Baez to perform at Camp Casey Sunday, 6-7 pm

From the Crawford Peace House Message Board:
She will be here tonite - around 6-7pm she'll play. Get into town much earlier than that so you can make it to the new site to see her by then, otherwise traffic will be backed up and you'll be sitting in your car or waiting in a shuttle line instead.

or they could always play from the back end of Larry's pickup.

do not want publicity, are giving their time to

The general public is not encouraged to attend

18. I hope she sings "Joe Hill"
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I, "But Joe, you're ten years dead,"
"I never died," says he, "I never died," says he.

"In Salt Lake, Joe, by God," says I
Him standing by my bed,
"They framed you on a murder charge."
Says Joe, "But I ain't dead," says Joe, "But I ain't dead."

"The copper bosses shot you, Joe,
They killed you, Joe," says I.
"Takes more than guns to kill a man,"
Says Joe, "I didn't die," says Joe, "I didn't die."

And standing there as big as life
And smiling with his eyes
Joe says, "What they forgot to kill
Went on to organize, went on to organize."

"Joe Hill ain't dead," he says to me,
"Joe Hill ain't never died.
Where workingmen are out on strike
Joe Hill is at their side, Joe Hill is at their side."

"From San Diego up to Maine
In every mine and mill
Where workers strike and organize,"
Says he, "You'll find Joe Hill," says he, "You'll find Joe Hill."

27. "It's walking to the battleground that always makes me cry
I've met so few folks in my time who weren't afraid to die
But dawn bleeds with the people here and morning skies are red
As young girls load up bicycles with flowers for the dead

An aging woman picks along the craters and the rubble
A piece of cloth, a bit of shoe, a whole lifetime of trouble
A sobbing chant comes from her throat and splits the morning air
The single son she had last night is buried under her

They say that the war is done
Where are you now, my son?

An old man with unsteady gait and beard of ancient white
Bent to the ground with arms outstretched faltering in his plight
I took his hand to steady him, he stood and did not turn
But smiled and wept and bowed and mumbled softly, "Danke shoen"

The children on the roadsides of the villages and towns
Would stand around us laughing as we stood like giant clowns
The mourning bands told whom they'd lost by last night's phantom messenger
And they spoke their only words in English, "Johnson, Nixon, Kissinger"

Now that the war's being won
Where are you now, my son?

The siren gives a running break to those who live in town
Take the children and the blankets to the concrete underground
Sometimes we'd sing and joke and paint bright pictures on the wall
And wonder if we would die well and if we'd loved at all

The helmetless defiant ones sit on the curb and stare
At tracers flashing through the sky and planes bursting in air
But way out in the villages no warning comes before a blast
That means a sleeping child will never make it to the door

The days of our youth were fun
Where are you now, my son?

From the distant cabins in the sky where no man hears the sound
Of death on earth from his own bombs, six pilots were shot down
Next day six hulking bandaged men were dazzled by a room
Of newsmen. Sally keep the faith, let's hope this war ends soon

In a damaged prison camp where they no longer had command
They shook their heads, what irony, we thought peace was at hand
The preacher read a Christmas prayer and the men kneeled on the ground
Then sheepishly asked me to sing "They Drove Old Dixie Down"

Yours was the righteous gun
Where are you now, my son?

We gathered in the lobby celebrating Chrismas Eve
The French, the Poles, the Indians, Cubans and Vietnamese
The tiny tree our host had fixed sweetened familiar psalms
But the most sacred of Christmas prayers was shattered by the bombs

So back into the shelter where two lovely women rose
And with a brilliance and a fierceness and a gentleness which froze
The rest of us to silence as their voices soared with joy
Outshining every bomb that fell that night upon Hanoi

With bravery we have sun
But where are you now, my son?

Oh people of the shelters what a gift you've given me
To smile at me and quietly let me share your agony
And I can only bow in utter humbleness and ask
Forgiveness and forgiveness for the things we've brought to pass

The black pyjama'd culture that we tried to kill with pellet holes
And rows of tiny coffins we've paid for with our souls
Have built a spirit seldom seen in women and in men
And the white flower of Bac Mai will surely blossom once again

I've heard that the war is done
Then where are you now, my son?"

- Joan Baez

reconnaissance and electronic countermeasures, and they flew in support of reconnaissance drones. They flew over NVN, very hazardous. He got the DFC and some others, including the Air Medal.

55. Being born in '60...
I was a little too young for Vietnam. My father-in-law left for a year to 'Nam a week after his daughter (my wife) was born. Some things he just won't talk about.

Met a guy who was living on his own--something not quite right with his mind...told me he had been a medic in 'Nam---that before he went it was his dream to be an MD, but 'Nam changed all of that...

In his yard one day I saw a rig he had made up to kill weeds on his property. He said, "That's the same stuff they used in Vietnam to kill all the foilage." That's when it hit me what had happened to him. I asked, "Did you get that stuff sprayed over you?"

His response: I don't want to talk about it anymore. So we didn't.
Sux what that war did (and this one is doing) to good people.

North Texas. It had another name though. DDT and a number or something. He was using it through the late 80's. I went balistic on my entire family when I learned this.

In Texas they were still selling it to farmers and ranchers.

It turned a brilliant person into a shadow of his former self. And, seeing what I knew he had to see as a medic in that war, I'm sure, didn't help either.

See my subsequent posts. See "Ap Bai's" (none). IMHO, an "Ap Bai" without a VSR (that little ribbon to the left) is a liar and a Chicken-hawk. I hate to be so cruel, but I think the motherfucker is a liar. To represent oneself as a participant in one of the most hidious battles in the history of the US military - Ap Bai - and to not have been there is, well, despicable. I call you out, Mr. Ap Bai. Put your credentials on this line. I think that you are de facto tombstoned. Adiaos motherfucker.

67. Those who do not listen won't hear very much....
Joan Baez has been touring & recording steadily throughout her long career. It's been a long time since the Folk Boom & there's always a new Flavor of the Month.

She has also continued to work for progressive causes. Nothing as "newsworthy" as an OD & time in Rehab.

51. Who is Joan Baez? Are you kidding me?
I'm 34, and even I know who she is. That question makes me feel old.

68. Thanks, ApBai
I've been thinking about your initial post where you kiddingly asked
"Joan who," and the responses you got ( I was going to respond earlier with something, but was slow so deleted). At first, I figured you were ignorant, when your handle - as DemoTex pointed out - would suggest you were anything but. As is obvious now, the ignorance was mine. I imagine I am your age ( roughly), was politically active ( in and out, released as a CO) at the time. I can even tell you where I was when I first heard Baez sing "I Shall Be Released" and dedicated it to her then-husband David Harris. What Dong Ap Bai actually meant and stood for passed right over me. I think very few of us would catch the reference, and there is something terribly wrong with that. I wonder if thirty years down the road somebody will use the name Fallujah or Tikrit or some other place, and people won't remember. So, again, thanks. Your mild good humor has given me a lot to think about.

78. Prove it to me brother.
Prove that you were in the 'Nam and at Ap Bai! Sorry to have to ask that, but your original posts were so weak! The "I was kidding you" defense is sticking hard in my craw. Why are you here? Why do you chose a name like Ap Bai, unless you were there? If you were really there (and I hope and pray you were .. to make such claims), describe a daily event that was not included in the movie. E-Z question.
Mac

Ap-fucking-Bai! What is wrong with this pic, sir? Answer, and you might gain my respect.

I can understand your resentment.

But you do have the terminology down--impressive research!

66. Maybe not, but it has all the hallmarks
of maybe one of the greatest this decade.

Peace is worth celebrating, even if its not here yet.

69. Have you been to Crawford in the last few weeks? Hallmarks?
Just what exactly is your "hallmark" of a party in this decade? Oh yeah, let us all celebrate "Peace".

I'm sorry Mods, I can't stay silent any longer.

Dear Fescue4u (as in the grass?),

You are an idiot.

Peace,
anarchy1999

once again mods, please forgive.

70. Whats your problem?
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 08:44 AM by Fescue4u
I won't alert on your post so that everyone can see how rude you are being.

I understand your point about it not being a "party". (and I do think that you take that label to far)

But great things develop their own momentum and develop a life of their own if they are to be successful.

Which would you rather have? 100,000 people there demanding peace with wall to wall 24x7 MSM coverage? Or a few hundred that with bare MSM coverage and which peters out in a few weeks?

The end result is what matters...not whether or not the protests conforms to your rules in your mind.

And NO, fescue refers to a sideline business that I had when I first joined DU a couple years ago (lawn care).

gheesh, lighten up please

74. So sorry, I've lightened up and I'm so sorry I offended you.
peace out,
Fescue4u

Ps/Thanks for giving me a pass and not alerting on me. I really appreciate your understanding and then some.

"The end result is what matters...not whether or not the protests conforms to your rules in your mind." Truer words may never be spoken.

Guess what? I have a very small role in all this.

There are no rules, we are flying on a wing and a prayer.

Thanks again, Fescue4u.
