My Tribute to DU…on the occasion of post 1000
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 12:44 PM by rateyes
On May 26, 2005, while surfing the internet I read an article which referenced a forum called Democratic Underground. I followed the link to this web-site and lurked around for about 30 minutes, and realized right then I wanted to part of this group.

I signed on as “rateyes,” a childhood nickname of mine, and made my first post. I was overwhelmed at the “welcome to DU” messages I received over the next few days. I don’t remember the thread in which I posted that day, but I do remember that the first “welcome” came from Steve_DeShazer who later posted one of the best threads I have read at DU.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=3973725

The second came from “getmeouttahere” whose team, the Raiders, got my favorite player from my favorite team. I guess we’ll find out soon who got the better of that trade “getmeouttahere.”

I’ve learned a lot over the last almost three months (I can’t believe I’ve posted a thousand times in three months—I know it’s not a record, but, hey I’m addicted). I’ve learned what PNAC is, and that we need to do what we can to stop that bunch of dangerous idealogues. I have learned exactly how the * administration “fixed the intelligence around the policy” in lying us into Iraq. I have learned what the “Espionage Act” is and have seen how Rove, Libby, Cheney, * and many others are guilty of the treasonous behavior outlined there.

I have read, at “understandinglife’s” urging about the bogus firing of a four-star general because he would not “toe-the-line” and lie for the * administration. Something IS amiss, there. I learned of a great idea that “Vinca” had about getting Cindy Sheehan nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and found at that many who are part of DU have the authority to make such a nomination. BTW, Vinca, if you hear back from Jimmy Carter, let me know—as will I.

I met DanCa, a disabled (but, “not where it counts”) individual who shares with me a love for the music of Elton John, and a deep respect for Max Cleland.

I was introduced (not literally) to a woman named Cindy Sheehan who wants to “drive a political stake” through *’s “black heart,” because of the lies he told that killed Casey. And, I have watched DU hold that “stake” as Cindy wields the hammer.

I’ve learned why * is referred to as *---as well as Bushboy, Shrub, the chimp, cuckoobananas, et al.

I have enjoyed hanging around in the lounge with the “lounge lizards,” although I do more lurking than posting in those threads. And, those pandas really are cute.

I have been gently (and appreciatively) corrected when someone thought that a post or two has been a little “insensitive.” I promise, while I may post a link now and then, I will not ever copy the sick musings of “freepers” in a DU thread. (And, BTW—I now know what a freeper is---met several down through the years—now have a “handle” on them.)

And, best of all, I have seen the care and concern that is shown by people for others whom they don’t even know---well-wishing and positive action for people who have lost their jobs, a family member, a beloved pet…DUers of every stripe & creed are some the best folk in the world. We do miss you Andy! I'm sorry for the abuse you took at the hands of others (freepers mainly) who didn't know you.

I know this post is a long one, and probably only a few will read it, and I’m sure there’s much more I could have said—but, I just wanted to, on the occasion of post 1000—to say:

Thank you DU!

7. I read the whole thing...
You summed up my feelings exactly. This site has been an invaluable resource that gives me the information I need to talk intelligently to my freeper relatives. There is nothing more solid than a position supported by facts.

I can cite facts, they can only provide opinions. It's a beautiful thing!!

I'm much slower than you but this is my 100th post. It seemed appropriate to put it on your thread.

Congratulations to both of us and to all the cool DUers here.

8. I love your posts, rateyes. I feel the same about DU,
but I must admit I haven't found out yet why Laura Bush is called "Pickles" and Chris Matthews is called "Tweety." Anyone know? I haven't heard from anyone yet on the Nobel. I imagine it will go to Sharon for giving the Gaza strip back, but a nomination for Cindy would be nice. Congrats on 1,000 posts - here's to 1,000 more.:toast:

11. Thanks Vinca,
and I imagine Matthews is called Tweety because he looks like Tweety-bird--and, is about as annoying :)--I can't figure out "Pickles" either.

13. What a WONDERFUL 1,000 post! DU should start a thread of 1,000
posts comments somewhere, make it a tradition. I've got a lot of posting to catch up on, but like you mentioned, this forum is addictive!

Congrats to you rateyes (and thanks for explaining the origin of your weird name! ...No offense!)

14. Welcome to DU!
Only thing about "rateyes" is that I'm wondering if there is some DUer who might think they know me--not a typical nickname--although Steve_DeShazer said he had a boss, I think, with that nickname.

25. The DU Addicts Anonymous meeting will start at 4AM during the
momentary lull. Today's topic will be coping with flattened gluts and other symptoms of addiction. So far the "cure" rate has been abysmal! Welcome to the 1000 mark! :applause:

That was a great post. This is a community and the people on DU welcomed me with the same open arms as they did you, I thnk it was NewYawker99 who gave me my first Welcome to DU and there were hundreds after him. This is truly a great site for information, news, opinion, venting, and swatting at the flies that circle the Bushit. It's kept me sane and that is no small accomplishment ;)

I am glad you're here and in case I missed you, Welcome to DU!!

32. Thanks. And, love the Avatar.
MLK was assassinated in my home state on my 8th birthday. As a young, white kid whose parents taught me to respect all people, watching the TV that night, and what was happening every night in the civil rights movement, and then watching the coverage on the assassination---it made a deep impact on my life (even though at 8 I could not articulate it very well) about the need to fight for justice in this country.

In another thread I posted a few minutes ago, I recalled that Casey Sheehan was killed as a result of a great injustice sanctioned by our government, on the 37th anniversary of MLK's assassination. More than ironic, I think.

34. I was 9 when it happened.
The more I learned about who Dr. King was and what he sought for this country, his assassination influenced my politics more than any other event in my lifetime.

He died demanding dignity and equality for all of us, and was killed by cowards who feared that America might one day actually live up to it's promises to all of it's citizens.
