I'm down, folks: have they Swift-Boated Cindy, and dashed our hopes again?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 07:14 PM by DeepModem Mom
The "hippie" talking points evident on the Sunday shows, taken up, apparently, by the press as evidenced by the WP's Mike Allen on "Face the Nation" have painted Cindy's supporters as nutcase Sixties holdovers, and Cindy herself has been savaged (including reportedly in "People," whose wide coverage we were so excited about). The other side can use foul language, can use any tactic, legal or illegal, can do ANYTHING -- and be lauded for their political prowess and success. They spend millions on ads, millions we don't have. Yet our tent down in Crawford, according to a sneering Mike Allen, is worthy of Cirque de Soleil.

I've been contacting the media, but until the press stops dancing to Karl Rove's tune; until the existence of right and wrong is once again acknowledged, and two sides not mandated for everything; until dignity and a fair hearing are granted the opposition in what is supposed to be a democracy -- what hope do we have???

(Sorry. :-( )

1. no way.
This is just one in a series of attacks - soon to be seen for what it is. A last gasp by morons in the neocon right to have the public ignore the truth.

4. In fights, one must take punishment and give punishment. Don't despair.
We who protest Bush's unjust war have the moral high ground and we will win.

28. I heard a story once...
About a soldier who was ready to sit down and give up, because his shoes were worn completely out and he was barefoot. His feet were freezing cold from marching through the mud with nothing but rags tied around them. Just when the barefoot soldier was feeling the coldest and the lowest, that he'd ever felt in his entire life, he looked sitting beside the road and there sat a soldier without any feet.

This story has popped into my head many times over the years, when things in my life were very hard to live through and I'm forever grateful to the old Army Sergeant that passed it on to me.

6. Is CNN still there in Crawford?
Is the Peace House still teeming with reporters?

When they all go away, my hopes will be dashed. But not until then.

9. the hardcores are hippies.
i drove to Crawford on an off day. The campers from out-of-state are big-time lefty protestors and well-informed people moved to take part because the media eye is there. They're Vietnam vets and people with long, gray hair. They are my sort of people and if the pukes direct their mainstream mouthpieces to villify via Hippy appelation, that is WELL beyond anyone's power to change. It is a stereotype used to degrade individuals. Like a yuppie. I beg of you: don't stress over it. Just another thing that will die when the last boomer dies with it.

14. You're right -- those brave guys who were in Nam...
and in many ways can never leave it, often would seem "hippies" by their appearance. I wonder if the press and public realizes this -- that those guys, unlike the Chickenhawk administration, were there, in the line of fire.

10. Nope. Her message is still getting out.
We all expected this would happen; it always does.

But it is working LESS WELL for them lately, and we are gaining ground.

We have setbacks, certainly. But we are gaining 3 yards
for every 2 we get pushed back.

Keep fighting the good fight!

11. Maybe
It sure looks like Cindy is getting Swift Boated. They're good at this stuff.

Keep in mind, activism takes time. Keep in mind the image of chimpys motorcade zooming past Cindy on it's way to a $20,000 a plate GOP fundraiser.

That's all you have to do.

Cindy is getting Swift Boated. That's a fact. That's what they do. But you can't let it change you. Cindy is still there, the people who care still care. You should to.

This is a struggle, and that's what you should ficus on. The struggle, not the outcome.

MLK knew he wasn't going to see equality in his lifetime, but that didn't stop him. He kept going, because that's what he had to do.

Hang in there.

12. They forget...those hippies from the 70s are
todays parents and grandparents who all have a stake in their family's welfare. In the 70s they were fighting for their friends, today they are fighting for their families, so they have a bigger stake in the outcome. Rove loses.

21. If Bush's approval is in the low 40's
and his approval for his handling of Iraq is in the 30's, how in the world can the majority of anti war people be labeled, "aging hippies"?

30. To be honest, I'm not sure how it happens if not for this smear shit!
2 weeks ago my Mom (repuke Bush**bot) mentioned that "this is just like Viet Nam", and went off on the Bush**Co administration. This isn't the first time that she'd voiced her displeasure (the first unJustice Sun., CAFTA and other things). When I talked to her the other day, she seemed rather OK with all of this crap w/Cindy, smears included, because she'd just watched Anderson Cooper, the night that I think that you and others mentioned extreme displeasure with his program. She's drinkin' the rwing Koolaid again or she's been smokin' something that comes from her TV screen.

Not tryin' to be terribly disagreeable, but I do think that this smear shit has a nasty impact and the not wantin' to think folks are still willing to fall in line.

15. Nobody should be surprised at this
This is the only response we could have expected from these idiots. Cindy Sheehan doesn't have to be a saint to change history. She has given us a fast, strong horse called Truth and if we don't ride it to victory we are screwed. We need to make the media irrelevant.

16. This just makes it all the more important to join the September 24
march - although I have seen it advertised as a march to end colonial occupation etc, etc, etc, etc. I wonder how many fucking adjunct causes we're going to see attached to what ought to be a flat out ANTI-WAR rally..... I do so hate it when we dilute our message to kiss someone's ass, it reminds me of the Judean People's Front from Life of Brian.

Politics can be very rough, and this is a real high-stakes move. They aren't going to just sit back. They are going to fight. What did you expect?

34. I empathize with your feelings
but I really don't think they are going to win this time. That is because the fight of "we the people" have finally broken through the media barricade, and we are reaching people who have been asleep. That's why "they" always won before, because the protests, etc., were not reaching so many people, but now, thanks to Cindy's stand -- and all of us who stand with her -- the truth is starting to penetrate the consciousness of many people who heretofore ignored it, or just took as the truth what the Freepers and Swift-Boaters said. I really do feel things are changing -- maybe still not as fast as we'd like, but faster than they were before. Don't lose hope, DeepModem!

35. I started reading Robert Reich's book, and the talking points
you just mentioned sound about par for the course--they attempt to caricature any dissent as a remnant of the '60s left.

Fortunately, people are becoming a bit tired of it.
