Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 11:31 PM by CatWoman
Me, I've learned to take what I can get.

A year ago, would CNN have aired this?

Tho Tenet was the fall guy, it was Bush who took this country into war.

I believe they made that quite clear.

1. It capped off the show giving the WH a pass and putting the entire blame
on the CIA.

That fact was very disappointing, but not unexpected.

13. That was my take on it, too
That Tenet took the blame to protect Junior and his thugs.

People expect too much and for it to be delivered all at once. Not only will that not happen, but the general public would turn it off, if it did. Too confusing. Too much to process. The groundwork has been laid. Now we need to go out and start filling in the gaps for these people. Those that saw this show will be much more receptive to new information now.

22. Exactly
Think about how long we've been digging and reading on this very topic. At some point, every one of has (or will be) overwhelmed. It makes your head spin to learn of everything that goes on while most of the people sleep. CNN has just made the alarm clock go off for the sleeping people.

CNN: "Wake up, look what's been happening!"
Sleeping person: "Holy shit! How did I not know about this? How did they do that? :wtf: "

Once they get over the initial shock, they can learn a little more.

I live in Brazoria County, TX. It is FULL of sleeping people, but some are starting to wake up. Be patient, and think about how long it has taken you to absorb this information. It's even harder for someone who's been drinking the kool-aid until now.

35. The timing of this show is also quite interesting
This aired right before Junior skips off to Idaho for his five day 'Iraq911TerraTerraTerraFest'. Not to mention only a few weeks before 9/11/05 and the **gag me** "Freedom March" in DC. It's as if the general public is being inoculated against what is to come - protecting them from the coming propaganda deluge. (Although I suspect CNN will more than contribute its own share during that time.)

Those sleeping people (Great description, BTW!) need to be made aware of the protest in DC on 9/24. With a month to prepare and a lot of new info. to digest, this documentary was well-timed to get many more outraged and disillusioned people involved in DC on that day.

I can hear it now, "9/11TerraTerraIraqIraqFreedom9/11IraqIranTerraTerraIran9/11!!!"

This'll give him the chance to slip in a few mentions of Iran in his usual 9/11/WarOnTerra/Iraq drumbeat. Before he slips it in permanently.

17. You're absolutely right.
No, they didn't lay out every last stitch of dirty laundry. But they did put out enough to do the job. We aren't trying to turn everyone into PNAC buffs here. It's enough that the general populace, who are really pretty unfamiliar with all this stuff, begin to see how badly they been had.

They don't need chapter & verse, they just need the executive summary: Bushco lied to get us into a preemptive war. The program delivered.

71. Exactly.
You have to speak the language that people understand in order to communicate. The general public is not going to comprehend the regional dialect spoken on DU. If the program attempted to communicate in that tongue, the general public would not have understood a word of it, and worse, would have thought it was nonsense and turned to Fox.

2. Agreed. Maybe it didn't go as far as many of us would have liked,
but it's a start, a foot in the door. A year ago CNN wouldn't have touched the topic with a ten-foot pole. I think we should write to them, thank them for their reporting and encourage them to do more of it -- and to keep digging, a whole lot deeper. Even though they've covered only the tip of the iceberg, at least they've finally admitted that there IS an iceberg.

47. If DU is aware of the 'iceberg' don't you think MSM is and has been
aware of at LEAST as much? That is their job!! and this makes them just as guilty! Why do they wait until now? They have blood on their hands as well. I'm glad the truth is starting to 'trickle out' but the inclusion of Halliburton profits, and all of the other war profiteers, who so urgently lied us into this war, needs to be presented along with these other facts. Juries can 'connect the dots!' And juries are the American people, whose sons and daughters have been dying; this is not Aruba, or Scott Peterson, or OJ Simpson here. Hundreds of thousands have been killed or wounded, and terrorism has increased. This is criminal, and I think that the MSM should be held responsible as accomplices in crime.

64. That's exactly what I thought
I had to keep checking it was CNN and not PBS' Frontline!! For the hour they had to put everything into, and since it is the first time truth has been introduced as part of its programming, it was excellent, imo.

They basically said that the WH 'wanted bad news'. Sen. Durbin said that Tenet, if he couldn't give the truth to the WH, should have resigned.

They are sparing Colin Powell by allowing that maybe he didn't get the right intel, (I believe he knew they were lying, but used Tenet to make it look like he was just getting info from the CIA). But maybe Powell is going to talk, and he needs credibility to be effective. I'll take that, if the real culprits are held accountable. He's like the collaborator who makes a deal with the prosecutor.

Powell's aide said 'this was the low point in my life. I wish I had never been involved in it'.

And the show also made it clear that the WH didn't want 'information', they wanted 'ammunition'!!!

They also said that Cheney and Tenet had been asked to appear on the show. Both refused and Tenet is not talking at all to anyone. I think indictments are about to be handed down.

Tenet was always puzzling to me. I used to watch him in the run up to the war, and sometimes before Congress, he gave me hope, other times, he seemed to contradict himself.

I don't know why he didn't quit!! I wonder was he threatened, or was it so important to him to be part of the Bush circle? It didn't last long! Anyone who gets involved with that family is tainted!!

But the show, imo, was excellent ~ for a change!

12. Haven't seen it yet, but it sounds promising. . .
even if Tenet is shown as the fallguy, it's only one viewpoint: there may hopefully be others, and perhaps we'll establish a true discussion, and from it what passes for the truth may yet emerge.

I agree with you, Catwoman -- a year ago this wouldn't have been aired. Now we're seeing a lot of little moments such as this. It may portend more changes to come.

Have to keep whistling Dylan -- for the times do seem a'changing.

21. I was pretty happy
When I told my husband we had to watch it, he asked why. He said we know that the administration will blame the CIA and never take responsibility, so that's what I expected. They did spell out that certain intelligence that was ruled out and delivered to the administration as such was then spearheaded by Cheney with just the opposite. Then it went on to show Rumsfeld, Rice and Bushy Boy following suit. I thought it clearly spelled out how they took information and flatly lied to congress and the people. Of course, for me, this has become expected from this White House and there will always be fools who just can't get it no matter what.

46. It turns out that at least some of these interviews are nearly a year old.
It turns out that these interviews (or some of them) were done LAST FALL! Here's an email from Larry Johnson to someone of the Daily Kos:

Larry Johnson's Response to my e-mail

Elveta, Thanks. CNN did the best they could. They were so nervous about this program that they required everyone who was interviewed to come in a view the program and confirm they were accurately quoted and that they stood by their quotes. Pretty amazing. I did those interviews last Fall. LJ

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/8/21/205218/731

I still think the show was amazing and they are to be commended for it, HOWEVER, I'd love to know who has been sitting on it since last fall and the precise reason it was released now. I do like the timing because it'll help negate a great deal of potentially positive reaction to Junior's coming five day 'TerraFest', but I'd really like to know what CNN's reasoning was.

Was that the administration pimped WMDs for 4+ months before Tenet made his "slam dunk" presentation on what evidence the CIA had for WMD's. Blaming this on the CIA is absolutely ridiculous. I agree it's better than nothing, but that's not saying much.

41. I enjoyed it tremendously
I can't understand the criticism of people who think that CNN has the ability in 1 HR to depose Bush. What-ever... :eyes:

Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 12:15 AM by CatWoman
every time we get a few crumbs, some people can't wait to start shouting "where's the whole fucking cake"?

I understand that we should be demanding more than crumbs, but hell, a little goes a long way.

With me, anyway.

There was no liberal radio.

We finally get it, only to have several daily threads about how much it sucks.

The media kept sickenening us with Aruba and Michael Jackson.

They do a damning report on Bush, and some posters are demanding that CNN draw up articles on impeachment.

51. I agree with you wholeheartedly
This process has taken longer then I expected, but at least the ball is rolling. I have my days where I want to kick some heads in I get so frustrated, but at least today isn't one of them. Of all the days for people to be bitching and moaning - it's upsetting actually.

67. I think all in all it's good
It's good to get most of the stuff out there. I think it shows that Bush manipulated. I noticed they made sure to note that if Tenent went against Bush he would be risked to be fired. One guy did point out that it was all politically motivated but the voice-over guy was talking which pissed me off cause you missed that important part. But it shows how they cherry-picked intelligence and even talked about the Iraq group with Cheney, Rice, Rove and the gang. I also find the timing very interesting and suspecious. What's up? Are they planning to go into Iran? I know that CNN is involved with the Bilderberg group and way too many of them are against Iran so what if they are bringing Bush's fall down? CNN was the obvious choice to do this segment since many people think they are "liberal" (ha!) and all that. I am glad they ran the program and showed all they did. All in all it's a good thing and it makes me wonder if Bush is going down hopefully or at least this tants his image.

72. I couldn't believe I was watching CNN.
My only complaint is that it's all old news. We've known about it for months . . . years even. But, overall, it was a scathing report that made it clear the intelligence was cooked by the neocons. I don't understand Tenet and Powell at all. They knew it was crap. THEY KNEW! And, despite being among the minuscule minority with a conscience, they let the war go forward . . . Powell, especially, having been to war himself. This report is better late than never and maybe, just maybe, will wake a few people up.

74. CNN's own advance publicity said it all
...(T)he CNN Presents documentary "Dead Wrong -- Inside an Intelligence Meltdown"...pieces together the events leading up to the mistaken WMD intelligence that was presented to the public. A presidential commission that investigated the pre-war WMD intelligence found much of it to be "dead wrong."
link

The stumbling block is the word "mistaken." The intelligence wasn't mistaken, it was fabricated. Much more to the point, it was fabricated by the Bush Oval Office via the Office of Special Plans and force-fed to the CIA.

Though it was downright exciting to see all that now-incriminating speech footage, the program's mission was to plant the idea in less savvy minds that Bush was the unwitting "victim" of a series of unfortunate events and a Baghdad town drunk. Expanding the roles of PNAC, OSP and DSM would have given the show more fairness and balance.

76. I liked it. It wasn't thorough enough, of course, because of time.
I do believe that if it had been a 3 hour special, most people would have either 1) turned it off, 2) chalked it up to librul media or 3) been unable to keep all the puzzle pieces together to see the entire mosaic. They need to do more installments of that and go into much more detail.
