"Women's health clinic" NOT "abortion clinic"! |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 03:52 PM by HootieMcBoob
This always bugs me. I think it's another case of the framing of the right being bought into not only by the corporate media but also by Democrats and other people in the reality-based community.
What got me thinking about this is the sentencing of Eric Rudolph and the stories about it in the paper. Every paper says that he bombed "abortion clinics". Well, there's a lot more than abortions that go on in these clinics. A lot of women go there for regular gynecological check-ups, or for birth control, and even to just get a pregnancy test.
To be fair to the people who work in these clinics, to the women who visit them and for the sake of accuracy, I propose that we, in the spirit of framing things properly so as not to let the right win the language and framing wars, from now on refer to them as WOMAN'S HEALTH CLINICS.
Whadda ya think?
<edited for more accurate description of "women's health clinic" as suggested.>

1. Or how about Women's Health Clinic? |
|
since those clinics are the only place some women have to go to get any healthcare at all.
Planned Parenthood was my only healthcare for several years when I had no insurance.

Family planning is only a part of women's health, so they shouldn't be out in the forefront there.

5. Yes. Anything but abortion clinic. |
|
Women's health clinic is probably even more accurate than family planning clinic.
I just don't think we should say "abortion clinic" and I think that whenever we see it used in the media we should write a note of clarification to them.

I went to PP at several points in my life to get my annual checkups, referrals for discount mammograms and every once in a while, when prince charming was around, I'd get some birth control.
Not once did I have to go there for a pregnancy test or for an abortion.
