Gary Qualls: Claims Cindy hung up on him
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 07:11 PM by steve2470
He's on Countdown right now. Is this a lie ???? He's saying Cindy and Camp Casey is all about me me me. He claims Cindy disrespected him. I thought I saw a photo of Cindy hugging this SOB. Then he turns and stabs her in the back.

102. Gary Qualls is an angry, bitter little man,
He's unable to deal with the cognitive dissonance of the utterly unnecessary death of his own kin and his own political views. It can drive a man mad.

OTOH, it was nice seeing Keith Olbermann gently -- but quite effectively -- prompting Qualls to say all the wrong things this evening on Countdown.

Someone at ABC should think about making Olbermann anchor of World News Tonight. He'd rock.

71. Yes I do agree
Both sides of the issue have equal say about how they wish their child to be remembered and how they wish to think about their death but they do not have the authority to spread lies and slander others. All Cindy is trying to do is find accountability which is something none existant in the Bush* administration. She doesn't want other kids dying for the lies told and the War Profits made. War Profiteering is not a Noble cause.

83. I'll look at yours if you look at mine baby
Let's talk about absolutes.

Bush absolutely lied to the American people including our troops to get us into this Greek tragedy, this ugly farce of a war.

70 soldiers have fallen absolutely dead while Bush attends fund raisers and enjoys golf and bike rides.

This war is costing America $122,820 PER MINUTE which is absolutely unsustainable and in this case, unjustifiable.

One thousand eight hundred and sixty eight people who had plans for their life lie absolutely cold in their graves tonight, for a lie.

From the looks of Freak Republic, they're starting to snap out of their zombie trances and glimpse the truth.

Enjoy your stay.

Exactly
When someone gives you a sincere hug in the public eye, you don't turn around and stab them in the back. Especially when you factor in what this lady's cause is-- her son is dead, and never coming back.

Something like this actually troubles me more than the whole idea of this war. America has completely cast our the values of compassion, understanding, and tolerance to the side thanks to "men" like Mr. Qualls. Very troubling.

17. He didn't do much for his cause.
The first thing I thought was "copycat". But...

She named her camp after her son. He named his after himself.

He castigated her for "abandoning her family" and self-righteously announced that he would never do that. What BS. As KO pointed out, her children are adults and she just left her camp to be with her ailing mother. (That slowed him up for a good long Texas minute.)

He switched gears and started hannitying the old "her family disagrees with her" saw. The segment ended before KO could point out that that was the family of her soon to be ex-husband, not her family.

Quite a performance, Mr. Qualls.

23. It would appear that when Mr Qualls met with Cindy he drew attention
... to himself. Since then he's been being groomed as a pro-war tool.

Yes, when Cindy and Mr Qualls met they hugged and it was reported they cried together as well.

Sadly, they forget that Cindy isn't even at Camp Casey anymore and yet the movement goes on. How can it be all about her when it carries on with or without her? This was their biggest fear and it is being realized.

26. Also, Cindy said, when interviewed by Ed Schultz, that when
they talked she thought he was a very nice man. Well, I guess that's how he repays her. I guess calling him a nice man is disrespectful. I don't really understand freepers anymore. It's like they have a mental illness that is spreading among them, a plague of sorts.

Even in my small town people seem to recall they met in person already and the media reports were favorable. I had a republican client today say they thought the man was being exploited.

This little scheme of theirs is only appearing to work on those already deep in their camp. It's another case of them preaching to the choir. Are they that afraid that their own are going to turn on them?

instilling a theocracy in Iraq.

I am not Maureen Dowd, I am a patriotic American and I don't agree with losing our good men and women for this cause.

I have a mind of my own and voiced my own opinion. Do you agree or disagree? The question as quite simple, actually.

What the media says or does doesn't lead me around by my nose. That is the reason I've not supported this war from the beginning.

BTW, Welcome to DU... :hi:

Please, allow me to try again for you.

I don't care what Maureen Dowd said, your choice to invoke it in the name of a person she wasn't referring to is between you and her.

It isn't relevant in the case of Mr Qualls since he's obviously being used (poorly I might add) by the pro-war supporters, IMO. I have no reservations with expressing my opinions on this topic. As I stated up thread I even spoke to a republican today who saw through this quite easily. It's a sad attempt to counter Cindy's honorable efforts.

Now, do you support the death of our troops for the installation of the impending theocracy in Iraq?

Feel free to supply a detailed answer, I don't require a meager yes or no. We both know life isn't simple black or white but various shades of grey.

73. OK, I've read everything you have to say
And now I have a question for you, if you don't mind answering.

What do you hope to accomplish by repetitively asking this question?

Are you seeking to discredit Maureen Dowd?

Are you just looking for an argument?

I'm merely curious why you would ask the same inane question again and again not be receptive to intelligent discord on the topic.

If you're seeking dialog on the subject Generic Other's reply was intelligent and thought provoking.

If you are seeking a bunch of lemmings willing to follow lockstep behind any statement made by a person viewed to be liberal, or a leftist without thinking for themselves, you're simply not going to find that here.

90. I have no idea why you were invited to read between the lines
of Generic Other's post. I saw no need for that myself. I found it to be concise and to the point. I suppose that's because we (Generic Other and myself) share a similar thought process.

I feel you are asking a group of people who don't see things in absolutes to do so, personally. I felt I made the point quite clear that for me Ms Dowd's statement was irrelevant in this case as did Generic Other, and other posters as well. Yet you keep demanding a yes or no verdict and refuse to accept anything less.

I can say, however, that you and I will not agree on this topic, nor your tactic used to express your point. Whatever that may be, since you've not yet clarified it for me.

Is that black and white enough for you?

Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 11:59 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
Requiring a pretty simple answer. I can't presume to speak for Ms Dowd, I don't know how she feels about this gentleman. She may or may not agree with you, but you don't seem interested in her views, only our reactions to your perceptions of her views.

I don't see it as a black and white issue. I see and respect the complexities that are involved.

Edit: Dang, I hate I post a reply and they've already left the building. It's like getting caught talking to yourself :P

82. Am I kidding? Hardly.
Because you are cherry-picking one line from a journalist, much like your president & his maladministration cherry-picked the intelligence to send our loved ones off to die for a lie.

You are not engaging in debate, rather, you are insisting that you make the rules of the debate, and, oops--your slip is showing--you chose a non-issue.

As for MODO's "impeccable liberal credentials", only someone on the far wrong would make such a statement.

51. Let me answer
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 09:57 PM by Generic Other
Mr. Qualls' does not have the moral authority to defend an illegal war founded on falsehoods. He is, however, within his rights to take a stand however wrong some may believe it to be; he has no special dispensation to criticize Cindy Sheehan's position by personally attacking her. She HAS the right to ask why her son was wronged. If Mr. Qualls does not believe his son's life was needlessly sacrificed, that is his right. Not every American agrees. I certainly don't.

58. It is the war's morality that is called into question here
Cindy Sheehan has the right to question a leader who caused the death of her son by waging a war founded on lies.

Mr. Qualls does not have the moral authority to force others to accept this illegal and immoral war just because he lost his son to the fight.

67. The war is wrong, and that fact gives Cindy the absolute moral authority
Anyone arguing otherwise is not arguing from a position of moral authority. In other words, they are wrong.

"her son died in Iraq (in a war that was sold to the American people based on lies) , and that fact gives Cindy the absolute moral authority" (to ask qustions of the man who caused her son's death.)

(my words)

Now go tell yourself you won some sort of argument. I'm done with you.

76. It is absolutely amoral to lie and that is a sin both * and Qualls share.
Cindy, on the other hand, knows the truth of this war and she is speaking out about it. If Qualls prefers to continue the lie and the deception in order to explain/justify his child's death, that is his prerogative. However, it IS amoral.

84. No. It is correct. She did not specify the moral authority in question.
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 11:09 PM by Carolab
Cindy has her moral authority and Qualls has his. Their authority is, respectively speaking, absolute in the sense that they have a right to their own moral convictions concerning the death of their children. As Cindy has said, "they have a right to their opinions just as I have a right to mine" (I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of it). The sad thing is that Qualls had to lie about his exchange with Cindy in order to justify his position. That's hardly an exercise in morals, absolute or otherwise.

94. No, Carolab had it right. You are caught in blinders.
You are picking pieces and ignoring others to keep an argument going.

Your position is based on tunnel vision. Moral authority to speak out about the war or demand answers when you've lost a child is absolute.

There is no translation to the exchange between Qualls and Sheehan in this, and it certainly cannot be twisted to support or justify dishonesty on anyone's part.

Rather than making repeated unsuccessful attempts to catch people in logic traps, why don't you come out and say what YOU think instead of dancing around what others think?

28.  Qualls and other shills cannot bring back the lives that were lost in a
war that was bulit on lies. Those who have lost loved ones are beginning to piece together the real reasons for Bush's war.

10,000 Qualls won't bring them back to embrace the lies of the Bush administration.

33. Waaah, is that the best he could come up with?
That's a pretty sorry reason to go on the war path. I can just imagine the awful things he was saying to her when she got fed up - assuming his RW twisted story is even true. One thing you can count on - if a RW'er in power found out he had doubts, a BIG LIE was created to promote this little spat. The truth is not relevant when it comes to RW'ers - they have no credibility any more and cannot be believed at all.

52. I think it's obvious that Mr. Qualls is being used by the right.
He sounded scripted when he started talking about how he stays home to take care of his family. I think it was glaringly obvious that someone coached him. Especially when he couldn't respond to Keith's point that Cindy's children were adults and that she did fly home to be with her mother. (Also note the use of the phrase families of fallen heroes. )

I actually felt bad for the man, because it is sooooo obvious he's a puppet. I feel just as deeply about the lose od his son , as I do about the lose Casey Sheehan. I strongly disagree with him and his position on the war. And I think that Steve Earle was right, some day they will question this war and we gain nothing by disrespecting the families of other dead soldiers.

70. I didn't see the interview, but I did hear Ed Schultz and a caller who was
at Camp Casey talk about him very respectfully last week. They said he disagreed with what Camp Casey was all about, made a speech that everyone politely at Camp Casey listened to without any interruption, and that everyone there realized that grieving parents have a right to their opinions. He was treated very kindly by those at the camp. There is no way that this man's grief will ever be made into the vicious, nasty smears that the RWingers and the media have done to Cindy. Just wish the media would be fair both ways. Everyone has a right to their feelings.

104. Cool. It was funny watching him try to set the same, flawed trap
over and over, though. I always think it's funny when someone -- especially a right winger -- thinks he's got someone trapped and is too dumb, pigheaded or foolish (or all three) to see the huge hole in his net. This was a classic case of someone being unable to see why his trap failed and resetting and resetting and resetting...

Call me strange, but I sometimes enjoy these little diversions.

But it's good you ended it -- wasted time.
