Question about rally in D.C. in September
I can find cheaper airfare if I fly in to Baltimore. Does the metro in D.C. go to Baltimore airport? I would rather not rent a car.

Where in D.C. is the best place to look for hotel/motel rooms? If I don't have a car, where would be the best neighborhood to try to stay? I am not looking for a 4 star hotel, BTW.

Thanks.

1. You can take the train into Union Station from BWI
There is a train station not very far from BWI. I assume there's a shuttle from the airport, but I've never used it.

Once you're in Union Station, you'll have access to the Metro.

As for hotels, I can't help you much there. We'll probably stay closer to Baltimore to be near family. You might want to look in the Greenbelt area, Silver Spring, or Bethesda for something near the metro line.

3. I doubt it. But you might want to contact Amtrak just to make sure.

4. Just about any downtown neighborhood ...
Metro Center, Capitol Hill, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom is a good place to stay. Also, if you stayed across the river in Arlington (Crystal City or Rosslyn areas) you'd be as close to central DC (and the march route) by metro than you would by staying in some D.C. neighborhoods, and the rates are usually much lower in Arlington on the weekends that they are in D.C. For example, the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington is connected to the Crystal City metro station, which is 3 stops from the National Mall.

7. We are staying in Crystal City which borders on Arlington.....
both have metro access. We got a pretty nice hotel through Priceline. I tried to get a hotel in Washington but they were too expensive and so I overbid but I tried to get a two star hotel for $60 or so a night and they bumped us up to a three star hotel with a revolving restaurant and rooftop indoor pool! My kids are excited about that part.

There are also folks sharing rooms in Washington. Here is a sight I went to last month and they were sharing rooms :

If you get a room at any of the surrounding cities you should be able to get the metro, into town, with hardly any trouble.

There's a bus that will take you to from BWI to the Greenbelt Metro station. It runs every 1/2 hour or so.

Got a place to stay yet? I live in Laurel, about halfway between Baltimore and DC. I'll have to talk to the husband, but we have a spare bed and a couple of futons. You just have to like cats and messes. ;) Or, there are a couple of inexpensive (relatively speaking) hotels near the Greenbelt Metro station.

9. Wow DUers are just the most awesome people
You are the second person to make an offer of a place to stay. I don't mind staying in a hotel but I am a poor teacher and can't afford $200 a night.

I just did a search and thought I read that the metro goes from Baltimore airport in to D.C. Did I read that wrong?

11. A lot depends on when you are getting in
There are two trains from BWI, the first and best option is the MARC Train. It is the commuter rail in Maryland. If you are getting in around rush hour, morning or evening it is the way to go. It will take you to Union Station and the Red Line which is your gateway to the city and the burbs.

The second train option is AMTRAK which is a little more expensive and runs a little less often.

The other option is as another poster said, take the bus to the Greenbelt metro station and once on the green-line, like the red line it is the gateway to the city. This can take a little while as the bus runs every 45 minutes and if you come in late at night, the metro does not run that often either.

www.bwiairport.com has some good info on how to get around.

If you are looking at hotels in greenbelt or college park, see if the hotel runs a shuttle or has a contract with the Blue Van Service

10. I thought it was a bus to the train, and the train to the metro.
