TX-06: Iraq Vet Harris To Challenge Barton
TX-06: Iraq Vet Harris To Challenge Barton
by Scott Shields

From Burnt Orange Report by way of The Stakeholder, we learn that yet another Iraq veteran is gearing up for a Congressional run. David Harris, a Bronze Star recipient, is collecting signatures to challenge GOP incumbent Joe Barton in Texas' very red sixth district. Barton's served in the House since 1984, running unopposed by a Democratic candidate twice, in 1996 and 2000. It's worth noting that 2004 brought Barton's worst showing -- 66% of the total vote. While that's certainly not a sign of trouble, it's also not the 76% Barton picked up in 1994.
Harris' platform is a bit vague at the moment, centering around "strong defense, strong families and protecting the rights of all Americans" -- pretty inarguable stuff. His website, FollowMeToDC.com is scheduled to go live in mid-October, so we can expect to learn more then.

Once again, the point here is not to highlight a race that is going to be incredibly tough for the Democratic challenger. Rather, to the extent that we can field viable progressive candidates in every race, we should. And to the extent that those candidates can potentially peel off some traditional Republican voters, then all the better.
