The Intolerant South
How come the south is pretty much wiping out all democratic senators in south, yet the North elects Republican senators some of the time? It seems strange that "blue people" in the northeast even give Pukes a seat when they vote for Dem Presidents convincingly.
The south, on the other hand, has excommunicated anything liberal in their neck of the woods and will probably try to finish off good ole Nelson of Florida.
The Intolerant South will solidify its war machine and then march into the north and finish a long long ago war they never gave up fighting.

Oh Abe, what do we do?

I have given up any hope that NC was going to change for the better. Chris Mathews blew a lot of smoke up people's asses about NC for two elections in a row. Back in 2002 and again in 2004 and he was wrong both times.
Your governor on the other hand....might be able to turn things around....who knows....He might be the next president of the United States.

In Mississippi

1 D controlled House of Rep.
1 D controlled Senate
1 D Sec. of State (statewide elected office)
1 D Our last Governor
2 D US Representatives (out of 4)

Yes, we elect a lot of R's, and go almost exclusively R for president since Reagan. Someone like Paul Hackett could win the state, someone like Kerry or HR Clinton has no chance.

Edit:

To win this state, you must be, among other things:

1) Protestant (UCC or UMC would be ok for most people)
2) A "straight talker". I hate *, but compared to Kerry he definitely projected the illusion of being honest and forthright.

Southerners like the candidate to come ask their votes, not to assume they will get their votes because of the party. The Democratic Party has to remember that we are part of the USofA and we deserve visits from our national candidates.

19. Yes, racism is all over.
If one compares the gaps between African Americans and whites in education, health care, income and other socio-economic indicators, they are JUST AS BAD in Northern states as they are in Southern states. And we know WHY African Americans are NOT doing better in the North!

Another indicator used to measure racism, is interracial marriage. SC has the HIGHEST rate of interracial marriage of all states. Far above the national average. Southerners are no longer segregated they way they were in the past.

24. The Intolerant North
How come the North is pretty much wiping out the legacy forged during the 20th Century by progressives and liberals across the country? It seems strange that "blue people" in the Northeast have forgone all their reason and instead seem to be taking marching orders from Rovian Republican strategists: that is continually attacking the South as if it were a monolithic region, in which all think alike.

Why does the Northern leadership of the party insist that Southerners MUST adopt every paragraph and sentence of the Party's ideology - which includes sneering at religion, patriotism and everything that holds this country together. Why do they insist that we, by rejecting their world-weary, cynical, cosmopolitan and airy dismissals of these attributes, are, therefore, unworthy of the claim "liberal" and must be purged in a manner both Trotsky and Rove would approve. In fact, the Conservatives on K Street can consistently rely on the churlish snobbery of the North - Northerners are the perfect allies in their efforts to create the sort of divisions that will destroy the legacy of Progressivism.

The Intolerant North will march to the tune of Conservative ideologues with their typical blindness. The Northern elite liberal will think he MUST enforce the purity of the Party and isolate it from the "thuggish South" and feel himself proud - while unwittingly playing into the hands of the forces who wish to destroy America and everything America represents. By insisting that everyone in the South do as they say, they will make precisely the same mistake liberal reformers made so long ago - a mistake that launched a war.

Oh, Franklin, what do we do?

George W. Bush was raised in Midland and Houston, Texas. He was just born in New Haven.

Here is a list of "notable" people from the Christian right. They come from all over the place.

There is the Christian left too. A good majority of them come from the North and the "Midwest."

We are the "midwest." I do not have to worry about this North/South nonsense people can't get over.

Religion and patriotism hold this country together? Color me confused. Which religion is that? Because Catholicism is the main religion where I live. If I make a remark against individuals who want to make the United States a fundamentalist theocracy, I'm "sneering" at religion? I'm so sorry I was defending freedom of religion - how unpatriotic of me! To stand up for an actual American value! Geez, I am arrogant!

And what type of "patriotism" are we talking about here? A true patriot stands up for their country when they see it headed in the wrong direction.

And last time I checked, I don't think the liberal elite post here. I think we're average Americans just like yourself. Don't paint yourself out to be a victim of "Northern" bigotry.

45. Don't mischaracterize my post
People in the North - or at least those who profess to define the doxology of liberalism - seem to feel that any expression of religion, whether it be snake handling or Zen, is the affectation of a disordered mind and evidence of the sort of backwards thinking that cannot possibly be associated with progressive thought. And we are on the same page on your concept of patriotism, although the elite - whose names on this board are legion - seem to feel that sentiment is also heretical.

I don't think the majority of people here are hostile to religion. I'm not religious, but I don't have a problem with it. I have a problem with individuals (aka the "religious right") who seem to think their mission is to convert everybody and turn the United States into a Christian theocracy. Some Catholics are in that category, but to be honest, I find them the most tolerant of all the Christian denominations. I say this through personal experience with friends.

I can accept that religion has been a major factor in many progressive movements. It doesn't affect me any. I can also accept that there are individuals who hate religion - and they come from the left and right side of the aisle. That is difference of opinion. I've yet to find a liberal leader throughout history who hasn't been religious. So, I really don't see what the problem is.

Plus, I didn't know we had people who are "elite" here! :D
I'm sure those members are happy to be noticed! :)
I've been around here since late 2001 - I started posting in late
2004. I think we're all just normal - some of us just post more than others.

32. Well for starters
go to these forums for a taste of what people in Augusta Ga. think about current events. http://forums.augustachronicle.com/cgi-bin/bb/ultimatebb.cgi

I have posted on this site for years and can tell you that they, as a group are the most Fox watching, Rush listening, Boortz worshipping, O'Reilly absorbed bunch that I have ever encountered. To them the gas prices are a bargain any way you look at it, America is a beacon of hope to all that we invade and bomb, and everything that is wrong in this country is Bill Clinton's fault, unless it can be blamed on college professors. Everyone knows that they are poison to young minds according to this group.

They have one local gasbag talk show host by the name of Austin Rhodes who built his career on harping on the career of one local politician named Walker.

Walker did get convicted and now poor AR has nothing to talk about except for his hatred of the poor. He did a show the other day about the horrors of those living in public housing getting free trash service while the people who owned their homes have to pay for it and how unfair it all is. He is a total racist but disguises it by attacking class instead of color but it is pretty obvious who he is really talking about.

Southerners elected Democrats in the past mostly because of economic purposes. We need to pull the debate back to economic issues in order to win the South. Mississippi is the poorest state, so in reality they should vote for Democrats because of economic issues.

41. I don't know the answer to your question
but I will say this:

A couple of years ago, there was a very short lived television series called "Mr. Sterling" about a fictional politician who was installed as a California senator by Democrats but was never officially asked his party until after they put him in. His father had been a well known and respected Democrat, so the powers that be "assumed" he was the same as his father. Turns out he wasn't a Democrat--he was an Independent. When asked about this by one of his staff (after installation), he said something to the effect that how could he be either, when the values were so different even in the same party, where a New England Republican was far more liberal than a Southern Democrat? I think about that quote when I see questions like this: political parties are fine and great, but it isn't until one starts actually defining their positions that they can see which side of the fence they're going to come out on.

As we all know here already, there are some Republicans like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins who fall far closer to the fence as true moderates and there are those whose party loyalty actually is over the fence, like Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller. I personally think John Breaux and Mary Landreiu are more DINOs than true liberals as well, but then I don't live in the south.
