Rumsfeld, Spiderman and Captain America help ‘America Supports You'

Rumsfeld, Spiderman and Captain America help ‘America Supports You' Campaign
By Eric Cramer

Spiderman greets guests at the Pentagon after being introduced by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. Marvel Comics is helping the "America Supports You" program by distributing a million copies of "The New Avengers" to troops around the world.
Eric Cramer

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, April 28, 2005) – Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld teamed up with two unusual heroes April 28 to show support for American troops wherever they are stationed.

Rumsfeld appeared with Marvel Comics action heroes Captain America and Spiderman, who visited the Pentagon to distribute an issue of “The New Avengers” bearing the logo of the DoD “America Supports You” program, designed to recognize American military members for their service and sacrifice.

A throng of fans of Marvel Comics lined the main concourse of the Pentagon for the event.

“This is about supporting the troops who are supporting our country all across the world,” Rumsfeld said. “I present to you – Spiderman!”

Are you ready, raghead insurgents, for the motherfuckin' superfriends!!!

That's right: Superman, Wonderwoman, Batman and robin, those twins who turn into stuff and shit. But no Aquaman, as he's pretty fuckin' useless in the desert.

Watch out for the Superfriends.

11. What great pictures!
But, then again, I'm a closet Rummy fan. He is what he is, and really doesn't make any bones about it. Out of all of the Bush people, he gives the most fun press conferences. I used to like and respect Powell, because I thought he was somehow more honest and honorable than the rest of those guys. After he lied to the UN, I lost all respect for him. At least Rummy is consistent.

That doesn't mean that I agree with his policies, so don't flame me.

18. FUCK Stan Lee.
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 05:11 PM by kiki
He's a talentless money man. He's the Walt Disney of comics. And of course, fuck him for what he did to Jack Kirby.

The scene with him in "Mallrats" is nauseating. Funny how the guy never asks Stan about any of the characters that he STOLE the credit and money for. Fuck 'im in his bespectacled eye.

31. He packed more story into 1 comic than any of the hacks today do.
I love the rythm of his narratives- and the dialouge is charming. I love Stan Lee.

Over the Summer I re-read the first 50 or so issues of Fantasitic Four, Avengers, and the original X-Men (from the "Essential" re-issue series), and I think his writing tops anything today, except mabey Alan Moore. I love escapism and non-stop action in comics- and Lee delivers.

SO- I have to disagree with some of what you say.

So he's an asshole who likes his money- so was Bob Dylan-lots of artists fit that description- I cant let it hang me up.

I saw him on Hannity & Colmes rip into some bimbo who wanted Marvel to take gay characters out of comics- he said "I'll bet there were gay heros on 9-11..." I've respected him more ever since.

Lee is a PT barnum type for sure, but I love him anyway.

Kirby? Well, Jack Kirby is GOD-but his worked never looked quite as cool once Dick Ayers stopped doing his inks. Chic Stone gets a close 2nd.

33. I am more old school so I tend to agree with you.
There are still good comics today mind you - but back in lee's day it was the norm and not the exception. And let's not confuse the artist with the man, I mean what lee does in his professional life is different in what he does in his private life.

42. Just so both of y'all know:
He didn't even write half that shit. Taking credit for other people's work was "Smilin' Stan"'s REAL trademark.

As I'm sure you know, the practice in those days was for the penciller to draw the frames, under direction from the writer, and the writer to fill in the words afterwards. Well, Stan often didn't even manage that. He'd say "I want a character here - sort of like Galactus but not, you come up with something." And REAL TALENT like Kirby would would come up with a character. So all Stan had to do was fill in the balloons - a task that he, more often than not, would pass on to someone else.

I've lost the link, but he admits it himslef in interview. "Yeah, after a while I couldn't be bothered with that stuff" or something like that... meaning WRITING, meaning HIS JOB THAT HE WAS PAID TO DO AND TOOK CREDIT FOR. Fuck Walt Disney - he's the GEORGE BUSH of comics.

You can love those old stories - just know that half the time, Stan had fuck all to do with their creation, apart from an undeserved credit on the cover.

Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 05:24 PM by kiki
Dark Knight 2 is a three-part story by Frank Miller. In it, Lex Luthor and Brainiac take over the US government, using a holographic president as a front ("Who cares if he exists or not? He's a GREAT AMERICAN!" - talking-head wingnut in DK2). They blow up the Daily Planet building in an obvious metaphor for 9/11. Batman kicks their asses.

Frankly the one you're talking about sounds like a bit of a rip-off...

29. DK2 is three big issues.
What I think they used to call "epic format" (?); they're about 60 pages, with a spine rather than staples.

It's also got Martian Manhunter, Superman, Wonder Woman, some hawkpeople, etc etc...
