ABC Family has a lifetime contract with Robertson

ABC Family Channel Condemns Robertson But Has To Keep Him

The ABC Family Channel, which was once owned by televangelist Pat Robertson, has condemned remarks by Robertson on Monday in which he called on the U.S. to assassinate Venezuela President Hugo Chavez. Robertson's remarks prompted demands from several organizations that his program, The 700 Club, be canceled by the channel. However, under terms of Robertson's sale of the channel, the program can never be removed without Robertson's agreement. In a statement on Tuesday, the channel said that it "strongly rejects" Robertson's remarks and directed all callers to the televangelist's Christian Broadcasting Network.

What a total mind fuck for these people watching ABC family. Here's a channel geared towards youngs kids but 3 times a day their programming is interupted by this asshole.

If I owned Disney I would dump ABC Family channel and start their own brand new channel geared towards young folks. I would assume they own the other programs they've put on that channel. They can just move them elsewhere

1. Well maybe if it is a lifetime contract...
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 02:50 PM by Moochy
...maybe ABC should hire special forces to curtail his lifetime. I mean if ABC has the means to take him out, by all means, it's cheaper than paying 200 million dollars due to breach of contract.

( on edit used ds1's excellent new sarcasm+ hazard indicator )

13. Excellent idea..........
or we could all hold a "prayer vigil" for "another opening" for the head of the 700 Club, such as he often does for Supreme Court vacancies. That would bring us down to his level though, and I don't think it's possible for us to sink that far.

16. Um uh I was misinterpreted!!
Well I was misinterpreted, when I said hire hitmen to take out pat robertson, I meant to just um take him out, as in kidnap him. and when I said kill him I really meant to give him a wedgie.

:)

9. What, no morals clause?
Seems to me calling for the murder of a legally elected president would violate all sorts of behavior clauses which are boilerplate in most long-term contracts.

11. That's exactly what I wanted to know--
usually there are built-in morals clauses in the contracts of TV "personalities".

Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 02:27 PM by IanDB1
Take his show and copy it onto VHS.
Copy that VHS tape onto another VHS tape.
Copy the copy onto another VHS tape. At the SLP speed.
Air tape at 3 AM.

Problem solved.

15. they may have to pay him for life
but they don't have to air him. bin Laden could easily buy a US network and sell it and contract like Robertson. Would we then let him on the air?

17. So this guy can...
... can say whatever he wants, do whatever he wants and there is nothing ABC Family can do about it. The FCC can't intervene because its subscription (cable).
What he if has a major epiphany and decides to come clean about his secret life with his long time partner named James. He wants to end all this hatred and he wants to further tolerence of alternate lifestyles. He pledges to devote the 700 Club broadcast to similar people who otherwise wouldn't be heard. Would they figure a way out of his 'lifetime' contract then? They aren't doing it now because he is making them money.

19. So, If Robertson Wanted To Fuck Goats On TV They'd Have to Let Him?
What a load of crap. No contract is that iron clad. Sorry, I ain't buying it. He broadcast terrorist threats, that crosses a line and if they wanted to pull out of the contract the could at least try.

28. I called them and complained my daughter wants to kill Hugo Chavez
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 02:55 PM by IanDB1
I called the switchboard and asked to speak to Media Relations for ABC Family Channel.

http://www.hoovers.com/disney-abc-cable/--ID__105999--/free-co-factsheet.xhtml

My daughter had just woken-up from her nap, so she was being cranky and crying while I was on the phone.

"I was watching The 700 Club with my daughter, and now she thinks Pat Robertson wants her to assassinate Hugo Chavez.."

WhhHASAaAAAaaaaa!!!!"

"No, you can't assassinate him! He was fairly elected!"

"Whaaaaa!!!!"

"What do I tell her? She wants to know why she can't go to Venezuela and assassinate him like Pat Robertson told her to."

They transfered me to a nice lady, and I went through the same spiel.

"Here, you talk to her and tell her why she can't do it."

My daughter says, "Don't be mean!"

The lady told me to call the Christian Broadcasting Network.

"Yes, we already called them. They wanted to know if my daughter was old enough for a fire arms permit yet."

By then, if she wasn't already, she knew we were having her on.
