"I didn't say 'assassination.'" - Yes you did.
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 03:50 PM by Skip Intro
he's a goddamned liar

"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out.' And 'take him out' can be a number of things, including kidnapping; there are a number of ways to take out a dictator from power besides killing him. I was misinterpreted by the AP , but that happens all the time," Robertson said on "The 700 Club." (Watch video)

The controversy began Monday when Robertson called Chavez "a terrific danger" bent on exporting Communism and Islamic extremism across the Americas. (Full story)

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think we really ought to go ahead and do it," said Robertson Monday. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." (Watch Robertson's comments)

3. What a load of crap
If someone said, "Bush should be taken out" on national TV, the SS would be all over the speaker and charging terrorism, incendiary speech, etc.

And the question remains for this "good Christian":

Just Who Would Jesus Go Ahead and Assassinate?

What a bunch of baloney!

That RightWing Thugs are highly proficient at splitting hairs over the parsing of words. If your two quotes are correct, then Robertson isn't lying. He didn't say assassination; he said assassinate. If pressed on the point, that's the argument that he would make, and he would dismiss it as a hypothetical statement in any case (you know--the kind that Rumsfeld doesn't do). Something like "I didn't say we should assassinate him, I said that if that's how he feels, then..."

So Robertson is a consummate asshole, but he's telling the legalistic truth in this case.

I can't find the article at the moment, but I'm 100% certain that Robertson must have been effusive in his praise back when Bill Clinton said that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman." By the relevant definition of "sexual relations" established in the Paula Jones case, Clinton was speaking the legalistic truth, just as Robertson is doing now.

See? It's all perfectly reasonable and proper. :sarcasm:

13. But I want to be sure
Did he say "I didn't say assassination" or did he say "I didn't say assassinate" when he made his disclaimer?

Granted, it's an asshole equivocation to play, but the two words are not the same, and if he's put on the stand later, then that's the claim that he can make.

20. What kind of friend are you, anyway?
Making me watch crap like that?!? For shame!

Actually, after I posted yesterday's message I heard a little more about it.

I still stand by my comments re: Pat as sanctimonious asshole, but the rest I should probably retract.

15. they have a wonderful double standard, don't they
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 04:14 PM by Lisa
as you say, they are great at parsing words ... for example, insinuating that a writer or professor they disapprove of is advocating terrorism, simply by examining on how they say something (or better yet, analyzing what they do not say!). But they were the first to scream with indignation at Bill Clinton's "meaning of is".

p.s. I suppose he is now going to say that by "take him out", it means that he greatly respects President Chavez and would love to spend some time with him, so he is inviting him to dinner and a show?

6. This is worse than if he said nothing at all...
How's that saying go? "It's better to be quiet and let people think you're stupid rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt"? Well, he just had to go an open his mouth - again.

10. In this quote he APOLOGIZES for "calling for assassination"
"Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement," he said in a written statement.

So if he never said it in the first place, why is he apologizing for something he says he never said?!?!?!?
