5. Let me guess: Suppository?
Or is your son older than that? I had to give one to my husband about ten years ago after he had a molar cut out. The pain meds made him really sick, so he got the little capsule up the butt.

7. Sorry to hear your son is having problems, what seems to be
...the cause of his vomiting? Weird sometimes what medications might work best depending on the diagnosis.

<snip>
PROMETHAZINE
Generic Name: promethazine (proe METH a zeen)
Brand Names: Phenergan, Promethegan

What is the most important information I should know about promethazine?
• Call your doctor immediately if you experience uncontrollable movements of your eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs. These could be early signs of dangerous side effects.
• Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Promethazine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.
• Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking promethazine.

What is promethazine?
• Promethazine is an antihistamine. It blocks the effects of the naturally occurring chemical histamine in your body.
• Promethazine is used to treat allergic symptoms and reactions such as itching, runny nose; sneezing; itchy, watery eyes; hives; and itchy skin rashes.
• Promethazine is also used to cause sedation (sleep), to assist in controlling postoperative pain, to control nausea and vomiting (especially after surgery), and to prevent motion sickness.
• Promethazine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Who should not take promethazine?
• Before taking promethazine, tell your doctor if you have
· epilepsy or another seizure disorder;
· been diagnosed with sleep apnea (periods of not breathing during sleep);
· glaucoma;
· an ulcer or an obstruction in your stomach;
· bladder problems or difficulty urinating;
· high blood pressure or any type of heart disease; or
· liver problems.

Benadryl will sedate most people ... a small (yet not insignificant) percent will become agitated or nervous.

It happens. If your sons nausea is not relieved (or becomes worse) stop the drug and call your physician.

edit: I used "benadryl" as an example as it is a drug most people are familiar with.

14. The only time in my life I ever took Benadryl, I had a bad cold and
it was in the new cold medicine I took. I took it at bedtime, and went to sleep. A couple of hours later I woke up and had this WEIRD compulsive jerky motion of my arms and shoulders for several hours, and just PACED AND PACED around the house. It occurred to me it might be an adverse reaction, so I didn't take any more. Agitation would be a severe understatement, lol.

I threw the bottle of meds away. No more Benadryl for me.

9. Something the doc told me about when my sons
were small that works is coca-cola syrup. I went to the drug store that had a snack bar and the owner gave me a small bottle of it. Said he got quite a few request for it and though he'd start charging.
It works really good. You can buy it at the drug stores now over the counter. It only costs a couple of bucks.

11. Hmmmm...Sounds like that Heathen Homeopathy to me.
Ya know, like cause cures like symptoms.

I love pointing that out to my Dr.s when they talk about headache relief (a number of them involve caffine, which can give you a headache) or allergy shots.....it makes these really big veins stand out on their foreheads.

12. LOL!! All medications can cause N and V. Promethazine because it
acts on the CNS vomiting center, I think.

13. Sounds like some of those medicine commercials on television
At the end, they very quickly list the possible side effects, some of which include the exact same symptoms the person taking the pills is trying to cure.

15. I think it's pretty safe, for the most part, as I was
given it to counteract morning sickness. I never actually took it because one of the side effects is sleepiness and when I finally stopped working, and had time to indulge sleepiness, the morning sickness had passed. But the fact that it's given pretty routinely to pregnant moms is a good sign that it's probably safe enough.

It can cause "epigastric distress" (which I read as stomach ache) though that is listed as a 'rare' side effect. The most frequent side effects are drowsiness and disorientation followed by dry mouth and urinary retention, as well as thickening of bronchial secretions.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most people react very well to this drug. Hope your son feels better soon!
