1. I'd find that hard to believe since it's probably the most utilized

military hospital these days, and the main clearinghouse for amputees, brain injured etc. coming out of Iraq. Unless they specifically planned to replace it with something. I doubt if Bethesda Naval Hospital has the capacity to absorb the excess, unless they had a plan to ship all the seriously injured to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and Wilford Hall (the Air Force hospital in San Antonio)

On edit I did see the headline on cnn.com with no story, it gets the location of Walter Reed wrong as Bethesda, MD. Walter Reed is in D.C. which could be one reason it'd be targeted for closure, D.C. is a Dem voting city with little representation in government. However, WRAMC is still one of the key facilities in Army medicine. It'd be insane to close it now.

Walter Reed Medical Center to Be Closed - Yahoo! News
Posted: Thursday August 25,2005 - 06:37:18 am

By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 2 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A federal commission signed off Thursday on the Pentagon's plan to close the crown jewel of the Army hospital system as part of an effort streamline medical services across the armed forces.
Located in the nation's capital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington has treated presidents and foreign leaders as well as soldiers and veterans.

Under the Pentagon plan, the hospital's staff and services would move from Walter Reed's historic main post to the National Naval Medical Center in nearby Bethesda, Md., to create an expanded facility, as well as a regional hospital at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.
