"Can you imagine who made ... Grandparents Day on September 11?" Answer:
WHAT A DUMBSHIT.

O'Reilly's Question: "Can you imagine who made ... Grandparents Day on September 11?" Answer: Congress ... in 1979

http://mediamatters.org/items/200508250003

On the August 22 broadcast of The Radio Factor, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly complained that National Grandparents Day will be celebrated on September 11 this year, asking, "Can you imagine who made the calendar on Grandparents Day on September 11, what a genius this was?"

In fact, National Grandparents Day -- currently established under Title 36, Section 125 of the United States Code -- is an annual holiday that, by law, falls on the first Sunday in September after Labor Day.

According to the National Grandparents Day Council, "September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the 'autumn years' of life." The holiday is largely the work of West Virginia homemaker Marian H. McQuade, who led a decade-long "campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents." McQuade's efforts came to fruition in 1979, when President Carter signed into law H.J. Res. 244, "A joint resolution to authorize and request the President to issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September following Labor Day after each year as 'National Grandparents Day.' "

The resolution, approved by voice vote in both houses of Congress, was cosponsored by 245 representatives, including Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA) and Rep. Dan Quayle (R-IN).

After expressing his disbelief, O'Reilly directed listeners to his website, where "No Spin Grandpa and Grandma mugs" are available for purchase.

From the August 22 broadcast of Westwood One's The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:

O'REILLY: OK, I want you to -- we don't really have -- yeah, we have about a minute. I'm not going to take another call because I don't want to cut anybody short. I want you to go to billoreilly.com. Now, listen to this. September 11 not only the day of the attack, but it's Grandparents Day. Can you imagine who made the calendar on Grandparents Day on September 11, what a genius this was?

E.D. HILL (co-host): Right.

O'REILLY: But anyway, if you celebrate Grandparents Day -- and you should honor your grandparents -- you wouldn't be here without them. We have No Spin Grandpa and Grandma mugs. Beautiful. Available on billoreilly.com. Remember, a lot of that money goes to charity. So everybody wins: Grandma, Grandpa, and the poor kids that we help out with the money. So go to billoreilly.com. Pick up your No Spin grandparent mugs.

2. It's my birthday too
I expect Mr. O'Reilly would like me to change that? Or perhaps to postpone any celebrating until the 12th...wouldn't want to ruin the holy event that got the RW war machine rolling.

5. geez, I thought it was Hallmark
i actually suspect it might have been initiated by some corporation and taken up as a 'political' cause.

My birthday is Sept. too- just another reason to hate the month.

My anniversary was my b-day too, something not celebratory.

I say we skip sept entirely.

8. You would have thought the leaders of this country back in 1979
would have had the foresight to see that in 2001 a band of Saudi terrorist would be allowed to crash airplanes into 3 building in the United States while the President read My Pet Goat to children. They should have know the second day which will live in infamy would be upon this nation and reserved that day for such an event.

:wtf:

10. Yeah, monumentally stupid.
Unfortunately, I don't think folks here are getting it. The holiday itself falls on the Sunday after Labor Day, not September 11th specifically. Did you every notice your birthday is never on the same day of the week every year? I believe this means Grandparent's Day is on September 10th in 2006.

And, yeah, the holiday was created at least 21 years before the WTC/Pentagon attacks.

On a side note: Was watching South Park last night and there was a debate on the Bill O'Reilly show between a conservative and a hippie "liberal douchebag." I was laughing so hard - as if Bill O'Reilly would ever allow serious debate, right?

12. O'Dumbshit ought to check out THESE Sept 11 events

http://www.september11news.com/Sept11History.htm

Please note this event in particular:

"On September 11, 1990 President George Bush (Sr.) made a dramatic speech to Congress, outlining the US position in the Kuwait crisis, and the preliminary steps the US was taking towards the Gulf War. Exactly 11 years later, on September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked America."

Funny how no one in the RW hatemedia has ever made THAT connection, huh?

Having Grandparents' Day on Sept 11 = bad

Hawking shitty mugs to grandparents celebrating Grandparent's Day on Sept 11 = good

So, in other words, O'Reilly don't like it that Grandparent's Day is on Sept 11, but he's going to capitalize on it anyway?
