CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - President Bush played host to the White House press corps Thursday night for a private off-the-record dinner at his ranch.

The casual affair of fried catfish, potato salad, coleslaw, homemade cheese and chocolate-chip cookies followed a tradition in which Bush and his wife, Laura, have the press covering his annual August vacation out to the their ranch in central Texas as a sort of thank-you.

The event was not held last year because of the busy campaign season. The invitations to the reporters were issued on the condition that they not discuss conversations at the event.

2. Homemade cheese???
I wasn't aware that he had dairy cows on the Lazy W. If the cheese wasn't made at the Lazy W, then it shouldn't be called homemade!

No way should the entire WH press corp have a dinner with the pretzeldent that they aren't allowed to talk about!

22. The more I think about this the madder it makes me
Will he lay down the law to the press corps? Threaten to deny them access if they cover Cindy? Will the media be told to ignore "Camp Casey" or to turn their attention to promoting the media creation "Fort Qualls"?

Whatever discussions take place at the ranch, the media have an obligation to report to the public. Failing to do so makes them paid propagandists rather than an independent press.

Let the business of the government be conducted in the light of day. Sunshine at Camp Casey!

24. That's the problem, who can say what the result is?
A private dinner for reporters to "thank them"? They're doing their jobs. It's their bosses' responsibility to thank them by giving them a raise if they merit it, not Bush**'s. A reporter who values his credibility -- and that of his news organization -- would politely decline such an offer. I wonder if any did?

Just another example of how BushCo operates. No thought to the ethics or integrity they claim to champion; no thought to how some in this country who still value such things will perceive this as fundamentally wrong, no matter WHO does it.

26. He can't even get the ten commandments right.
He probably doesn't know those 613 mitzvot even exist. He wouldn't know a mitzvah if it bit him on the butt.

I don't think I'll ever eat catfish or chocolate chip cookies again. My momma could fry up the best catfish in creation, but * with his phony pig farm ranch and phony downhome cowboy act just sully my fond memories of the south, e.g., fireflies, fried foods, iced tea, and sitting on the front porch in the evening.

I just had a revelation. If my mom was alive she would probably say it doesn't matter how much money they have, the whole Bush family is just plain trashy.

Forgive the rambling. It just seems that everything that * does, no matter how earth-shaking or tiny, is designed to make a sane person crazy.

30. Yep! Bolton doing the same. I wonder if it's on our tab..
Not to mention, banning afew not getting with the Bush program.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/ambassador-boltonas-ver_b_6232.html

So John Bolton is having a reception at the U.N. ambassador's private residence in the penthouse at the Waldorf Astoria tonight. The Washington Times, Fox News, and various other conservatives will be represented there, but some of the people who won't be there include Colum Lynch from the Washington Post and Warren Hoge from the New York Times, both of whom cover the U.N. for their respective papers. If you thought the Bush administration’s cowardice about facing anyone not completely on board was confined to Crawford and the campaign trail, think again.

Lynch actually called the mission to the U.N. to confirm that he was not invited, and he was told that, indeed, he was not. I asked Warren Hoge about all this. "I'm not taking it personally. I've never met John Bolton," he told me, "and clearly this will continue through tonight."
