I called the American Legion, D.C. headquarters, 202-861-2700.
I told the dude who took the call I am not a member of the Legion, *am* of the VFW, but am only a common vet, not any officer or anybody. He cut to the chase, “How can I help you.” I said that the news reports of the Legion’s commander or whatever his title, regarding his criticism of citizens speaking out on the Iraq war were inflammatory, that in the past I have specifically asked both the Legion and the VFW headquarters whether they are a political organization and the answer was NO and yet it recurs that these organizations take political stances, that the veterans and the military belong to the whole country, not to one political party.
He said, “Where can somebody get back to you?” I said that wasn’t necessary, that I would be satisfied if my comments were passed along honestly. He said, “Well, you made a BOLD statement…” I cut him off saying, “Was there anything in what I said that was not true?” He said, “I didn’t SAY that.”
I said, “Well, let me ask you this: Is the American Legion a POLITICAL ORGANIZATION?” He said, “No, we do not endorse political candidates or parties…”
I said, “Well, you ARE endorsing a political agenda.” He said, “Can somebody get back to you.” I said, “I don’t want a DEBATE. I will be satisfied if you pass my comments on honestly.” He said FINE!
