Why We Don't Want Men to Vote
August 26, 1920

The Day the Suffrage Battle Was Won
Opposed by a well-organized and well-funded anti-suffrage movement which argued that most women really didn't want the vote, and they were probably not qualified to exercise it anyway, women also used humor as a tactic. In 1915, writer Alice Duer Miller wrote,

Why We Don't Want Men to Vote
? Because man's place is in the army.
? Because no really manly man wants to settle any question otherwise than by fighting about it.
? Because if men should adopt peaceable methods women will no longer look up to them.
? Because men will lose their charm if they step out of their natural sphere and interest themselves in other matters than feats of arms, uniforms, and drums.
? Because men are too emotional to vote. Their conduct at baseball games and political conventions shows this, while their innate tendency to appeal to force renders them unfit for government.

3. I shouldn't hype my own post
but when I first saw this it seemed so relevant to today. I'm hoping to get this onto the front page and for someone to sneak this into freeper land.

11. I notice some DUers
post or lurk on the Freep(?) website chat group. It would be hilarious to get this in there and then see the responses.

A little mischief to keep the spirit of the matriarch alive.

7. digression; the Iroquois
If I remember correctly the way the Iroquois confederacy did things,

(1) Only men could hold office, but

(2) Only women could vote for which men would office.

12. LOL! Reminds me of that "When did you decide to become straight" survey...
... that pops up on the web now and then.

Both turn tired, old reactionary talking points upside down, exposing them for the nonsense they are.

Great post!

:)

13. Made my day....
which was crap! Attended the 85th Anniversary 'celebration' of Women's Right to Vote...the program's first page named 5 Woman suffragists (excluding Alice Paul) and nothing about their courageous actions. The next page in the program listed 15 men and their definite contributions to women's suffrage.

Yes, you read that correctly. I live in Cincinnati....the most UN-EVOLVED city in the US of A....I have got to get out of here! And soon!

To top that off, Jean Schmidt...aka Mean Jean....who just won the 2nd Congressional District in Ohio (and President of Cincinnati's Right to Life Association) was presented with not one but TWO awards....at which point I stood up and excused myself from the proceedings...saying that this must be one sick joke....

WTF is it with this place? Here she is Prez of this association and has not adopted one child...the hypocrisy sickens me.

This event was held in Union Terminal....where Bush declared war on Iraq....Cincinnati has very bad Karma, I believe.

15. LOL
I was imagining what it would be like to have the men trying to gain the ladies' favor so they could get elected and hold office. I should think women would be very good judges of who would beat the drums to war and who would be the better diplomat.
